I'll Read One Day! I'll Read Today
I bought this book  : "Reading the English Garden :
Literature and Cultural History of Gardens" after my Exhibition in April 2012.
About My Exhibition in 2012, below,

I had decided to stay in Britain that summer and bought it because
I wanted to visit some of the English gardens during my stay.

Even though I took it to Britain, I returned to Japan without opening the book.

While thinking
"I'll Read One Day!"
9 years have passed.

I thought my "Mountain of Unread Books" was only there for a few years, but I realized that it has grown for 9 years.

Well, I'm glad that " I'll Read One Day!!" became "I'll Read Today!" and then "I did read it!".

And what I'm glad about reading now is that I visited a few English gardens in the last 9 years, so while I was reading I could imagine the sceneries which are mentioned as examples, even if they are not the gardens introduced in the book.

If I had read this book before visiting, I would have had a different view of gardens, however, I would like to think it is good to read now rather than feel regret.

From Different Angle
A. 権力の面から / From the Aspect of Power

Without Cover

From the Aspect of Power
I was aware that the garden is a healing place, sometimes with philosophical elements, and in some times a symbol of wealth.

However, at the beginning of this book, the 'Introduction' part, I was surprised at the way of thinking that I had never thought of before.

It is written as below in the 'Introduction' part.
"The formal garden represented by 17th century France, which regularly arranges formal flower beds on the left and right and boasts a unified beauty, is a symbol of human domination of natural objects, whereas the landscape garden is characterized by irregularity and diversity, which began in 18th century England, can be deciphered as implying the absence of absolute power, democracy, individualism, etc. in Britain, the constitutional monarchy. "
(Introduction ・ P.3 L.6 -17)

I had a fresh surprise because I had never seen the garden as a "symbol of human domination of natural objects" or "implying the absence of absolute power, democracy, individualism, etc."
I became more interested in the later content.

I was also surprised that the origin of the English garden was Islamic gardens.

I had known that there were some landscaping gardening trends, and I noticed that gardens from that time have very few opportunities to remain looking the same, they are not like fashion, literature, and buildings.

If documents remain, it could be possible to reproduce something close to the garden at that time, but it is rare that the actual garden of the old days remains.

B. 文学面から / From the Literary Angle

Francis Bacon was a British philosopher, theologian,

In the words "Scientia Potentia Est" : "Knowledge is Power"
he proposed to overcome nature by exploring nature and
bring welfare to humankind.
He is said to be famous for the concept of "Idols",
but I do not understand it well.

Francis Bacon
The fact that intellectuals of each era take the garden seriously and leave their thoughts in writing shows that traditionally the garden is more than just a hobby in Britain.

The philosopher, Francis Bacon thought
"Thinking of the garden as
「The best for purifying the human soul」" (P.59 L.14),
and he left his own theory of gardens.

"Purification of the soul" !, I really feel so.

Nowadays, if we don't have a garden, or if the garden isn't big enough, it seems like a walk will enable a 'Soul Purification'!

"Untouched wilderness, including wilderness" (P.62 L.7)

Ando wrote,
"It is not difficult to imagine that this poet had a sense of beauty that was ahead of the next era" (P.62 L.8)

Milton had the aesthetic of a garden with natural elements, rather than a garden like  a 'formal garden', which had everything in place and in 'God's order'.

I can feel that the way of thinking about the garden gradually went towards the landscape garden.

「緑の木陰での緑の思索」(a green thought in green shade)

The poet Andrew Marvell wrote, below.
"The garden I draw has the meaning of retreat from the world, denial of worldly pleasures, and a place of meditation for loneliness.
Immerse yourself in 'a green thought in green shade' and end with the joy of loneliness. "
(P.62 L.15 - P.63 L.1)

Ando wrote, below
"Marvell's garden is an enclosed space (of course), but it must be a natural garden with some dense trees for 'a green thought in green shade' ". (P.64 L.17 - P.65 L.1)

I think he was finding the effects of forest bathing and meditation in the garden as it is now.

Due to the large size of the English garden, it is possible to create enough woodland on the site for forest bathing.

At the very least, it's easy to set up planting that gives the impression of being 'dense'.

     Beauty of Irregularity and Inconsistency

(P.69.L.10と考え、また、

Scotney Castle

Beauty of Irregularity and Inconsistency
The writer analyzes that the garden theory and aesthetics of each of all three of them are 'trying to find some kind of beauty in the irregularities and inconsistencies of natural plants and terrain, which were ahead of their times'.  (P.67 L.6 - 8)

I am attracted to the fact that they tried to find beauty in irregularities and inconsistencies, and I think that Japanese beauty is this side.

However, the writer thinks that
'these aesthetics were traditionally contained in British values'
(P.69 L.10)  and
'British own values were finding beauty in the irregular rather than regular, however, the opportunity to manifest them was suppressed by admiration of Italy in the Renaissance and France in the 17th century.
(P.69 L.12 -15)

Today there are still many formal gardens in Britain, but I think people prefer  landscape gardens and cottage gardens.

Even for Japanese people, when we think of English gardens, we probably think of the latter.

Butsugyoji -Temple
I and my husband R were aiming for Butsugyoji -Temple.
On the map, we should be near Butsugyoji -Temple,
but we couldn't see the Temple like building,
so I asked a woman we met on the road to

Finally Genta-zuka
A. 頂上に / On the Top

Mound, Genta-zuka
On the Top
Where is the mount, Genta-zuka? I was looking for it while climbing the steps.

I couldn't see the mound, so I was sceptical that maybe it was near the main hall.

At the top of the mountain or the top of the garden, I finally saw Genta-zuka.

Kajiwara Kagesue (1162 - 1200) was a samurai who served
Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147 - 1199 / incumbent : 1192  - 1199) who was the founder and the first shōgun of the Kamakura shogunate of Japan.

The Mound, Genta-zuka where it is said one arm of Kajiwara Kagesue is buried.

Genta is another name for Kagesue.

After Yoritomo's death, Kagesue's father, Kagetoki (1140 - 1200) was banished from Kamakura after being impeached by 66 Gokenins ; Vassals, and the Kajiwara clan retreated to Sagami Province where he and his son : Kagesue committed suicide in the mountains.

It is said that only one arm of Kagesue (Genta) was sent to Kamakura and buried in Genta-zuka : Genta Mound in Butsugyoji -Temple.

By the way, Kamakura has a place name called Kajiwara, which was the birthplace of the Kajiwara clan.

Together
My interest in Genta-zuka began when I happened to find a mound of Genta's wife, Shinobu : Shinobu-zuka', when I took a walk in Kamakurayama about 10 days ago.
About Shinobu-zuka, below,

Shinobu knew of Genta's death and committed suicide here in Fueda.

Even after her death, her sad crying was heard around there, so the villagers asked the Busshoin Nishu Saint in 1495 to comfort the spirit of Shinobu, and it was said the hermitage was Butsugyoji -Temple's origin.

Originally, Shinobu-zuka was built facing Genta-zuka, but it is thought that it was moved due to the subsequent development of residential land and the improvement of Fueda Park.

It is said that Shinobu was involved in the origin of the Temple, so
I wish they had put Shinobu-zuka in the temple grounds.

People who were involved in the development may not have been concerned about the small 'Shinobu-zuka'.

However, they may have been afraid to destroy it.

I don't know the details, anyway, currently Shinobu-zuka is located in Kamakurayama.

I wanted to bring Genta-zuka and Shinobu-zuka together in my blog, above.

I can see Mt. Fuji from the top.
I thought that the shape of Mt. Fuji's summit
is similar to be Genta-zuka.

I can also see the Fueda residential area.

I can see the baseball field and tennis courts in Fueda Park.

Vegetable Garden in Grave
I saw the vegetable garden on a grave site for the first time.
I was surprised in many ways.

Does the person who planted them eat them?

Temple Building

Let's come in the azalea season next time, R!

Thank you, Butsugyoji -Temple, for the wonderful scenery.

I was impressed that the garden was beautifully maintained even in the off-season.

By all means, I would like to visit during the azalea season.
