Helmsley'
North
Yorkshire Moors Railway
From 'Helmsley' to 'Whitby' We went along roads taking almost the same route as the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, from Pickering to Whitby. We travelled on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on another day. I will write about it in a later section. |
Byland
Killarney

Moors |
After Rievaulx Terrace, we were heading north towards Whitby.
We went across the moors on our way.
When
we were in Byland Abbey, it is already in the North York Moors National Park,
however,
it does not have any moors.
In
2005, we had an Ireland
trip and we lost our way in R's car in the Killarney National Park (★) in a pitch‐dark night.
We had driven there in the daytime so that I knew there were deep valleys with precipices and I was very frightened.
At that time (maybe still now), there were no street lights so we only depended on the head lights and it was more scary than city nights.
Therefore since I had today's plan I really hoped we would cross and finish the moors in bright daylight.
In every sightseeing spot of this day, I had a hurried feeling somewhere in my inside.
I knew British summer is bright until late in the evening, however, the Ireland trip was in the summer, too so I could not lose my worrying completely.
That day we could go into the moors in daylight, I looked at the views and was excited, even though it was not good weather and I did not catch a sense of distance, so I gave priority to moving quickly rather than enjoying the views.
Hence we only stopped the car once and I walked a little bit at the end of the moors.

There was a carpark and our only stop was here. |
Walking Map I felt envious of somebody who can walk on these routes and who is happy when I looked at this map. |
