Rの友人、J&S宅に一晩お世話になり、この日、連れて行ってもらったのは、ブラック・カントリー・リビング・ミュージアム / Black
Country Living Museum でした。

その名前は、その地域をカバーしていた重工業の煤
(スス)
に由来していると考えられています。
また、表面層が、厚さ30フィート（10メートル）の石炭層になっているのがもう一つの理由です。
産業革命時には、この周辺は、最も産業化され、石炭鉱山、コークス(骸炭)、鉄鋳物工場、ガラス工場、レンガ製造工場、鉄鋼工場がありました。
その産業化とともに、ひどい大気汚染になりました。

We stayed one night at R 's friend, J&S home and they took us the Black Country Living Museum on that day.
There are several sightseeing spots relatively close to their house, and from J chosen sites I chose Bridgnorth and the Black Country Living Museum.
About Bridgnorth is below.

The Black Country Living Museum is an open-air museum which has rebuilt historic buildings.

Black Country is an area name, which refers to the West Midlands region, to the west of Birmingham.
The name is believed to have come from the soot of heavy industry that covered the area.
Another reason is that the surface layer is 30 ft (10 m) thick coal seam.
During the Industrial Revolution, it became one of the most industrialised parts of Britain with coal mines, coking, iron foundries, glass factories, brickworks and steel mills.
Along with its industrialization, became bad air pollution.

The
museum was opened to the public in 1978 and since then more than
50 stores and houses have been relocated and other industrial
buildings such as a former railway goods yard, disused lime
kilns,
canal arm and
former coal pits from the Black Country, into a site of
105,000 square meters (26 acres).
A span of 300 years history is
demonstrated.

以前は電車(トラム)も走っていたのですが、心無い来場者によって
部品が盗まれ、現在運行できなくなっています。

出口
日本にも炭鉱や銅山の様子を復元した施設(旧坑道利用)がありますが、
手すりがあったり、明るく安全な道筋が作られています。
ですが、ここは真っ暗、二人で１つの懐中電灯で足元を照らしつつ進みます。 当時の坑夫たちの生活が再現されている場所で、 ガイドさんが立ち止まって説明する時にだけ、わずかな明かりが点灯します。 出口から出た時は、ほっとしました。
Way Out
In Japan there are facilities (using former drifts) that
show coal mines and copper mines,

トーマス・ニューコメン
/ Thomas Newcomen (1664 -1729) は、英国の発明家であり、技術者です。
彼は鉱山を排水するために、世界で最初の実用的な蒸気機関を建造しました。
彼の発明した蒸気機関は、シリンダー内を移動するピストンによって機械(マシーン)に
よる的な仕事がなされ、これはニューコン・エンジンと呼ばれます。
産業革命の動力を担った蒸気機関の実質上の発明者とされています。
Newcomen
Engine
Thomas Newcomen (1664 -1729) was a British inventor and engineer.
To drain mines he built the world's first practical steam
engine in which mechanical work was achieved by a piston moving in a cylinder.
It is called a Newcomen Engine.
