Culpeper Garden

この庭の名前は、17世紀の持ち主の姓：Culpeperから来ています。
もともとは、お城のキッチンガーデンであったものをレディベイリー：Lady Ballie (1899 - 1974) が所有してた時に切り花用の庭にしました。
ですが、1980年にガーデンデザイナーのラッセルページ: Russell Page (1906-1985) が大きなコテージガーデンに変えたのです。

午前11時から約1時間のガーデンツアーに参加しました。
女性の庭師の方が案内してくださいました。
We joined their garden tour which
started 11:00am, for about one hour.

ブラックスワン！
ボートの名前も'Black Swan Ferry'
そういえば、お城のロゴにも組込まれています。
（白い）白鳥号だったら、なんとなくキッチュだけれど、
ブラックスワン号ならかっこいい？
Black Swan!
The name of the boat is 'Black Swan Ferry'.
Oh! Yes! Their Logo-design includes it.
If it was 'White Swan Ferry', it could be kitch.
Black Swan is cool, isn't it?

たまねぎの花！: Allium: A. cristophii
日本では馴染みがあまりありませんが、
観賞用のタマネギで、英国では結構人気のように思えます。
私も結構好き！この花を見つけると、
思わず写真を撮ってしまいます。
個性が強すぎて日本人にはあまり好かれないのかもしれません？
R は食用も観賞用も好きではありません。
下記はネギ属のWikipediaより
ギガンチウム (A. giganteum)、クリストフィ (A. cristophii) などの
大型の品種は立体的な花壇を設計するのに重要である。
豪華な紫色の花を咲かせる交配種がいくつか作出されているが、
中でもパープルセンセーション (A. hollandicum) は
人気があり、英国王立園芸協会 (RHS) より
Award of Garden Meritを授与された。
Flower is Onion! : Allium: A. cristophii
This ornamental onion is not familiar for people in Japan,
although it seems to be popular in Britain.
I like it too and when I find them
I photograph them in spite of myself.Allium might be too strong a personality for Japanese,
so it might not be loved in Japan.
R hates onion and does not like Allium.

are used as border plants for their ornamental flowers,
and their "architectural" qualities.
Several hybrids have been bred, or selected,
with rich purple flowers.

きつねのてぶくろ：Foxglove
この花から、英国を感じます。
日本でこの花が庭にあると、
イングリッシュガーデンに感じます。
私は 'きつねのてぶくろ' と覚えてしまったのですが、
一般的には 'ジギタリス' と呼ばれているのかもしれません。
私が聞いた 'きつねのてぶくろ' の話は、
「きつねが狩りをするときに、音をたてないように、
この花をてぶくろとして使用するから」
というものでした。
ギリシャ語で「ゆび」を表すdigitalに由来する。
これは花の形が指サックに似ているためである。
コンピューター用語のデジタル（ディジタル、digital)と起源は全く同じである。
種名のpurpureaは「紫」の意味。
園芸種には白やピンクの花色のものがある。
また、解説では
ジギタリスは別名をキツネノテブクロ（英名のfoxgloveの直訳である）という。
ヨーロッパ原産であるが、観賞用あるいは薬用に世界中で広く栽培される。
高さ1メートル前後で分枝しない。
西洋では暗く寂れた場所に繁茂し不吉な植物としてのイメージがある植物とされる。
いけにえの儀式が行われる夏に花を咲かせることから
ドルイド達に好まれると言われる。
「魔女の指抜き」「血の付いた男の指」などと呼ばれていた地域もある。
メーテルリンクは、「憂鬱なロケットのように空に突き出ている」と形容している。
また違う語源の説明がなされていて、おもしろいです。
いろいろな説があるというのは、人々が興味がある証拠ですね。

Foxglove
I feel this flower is British.
If it is in a garden in Japan,
I could feel the garden is an English garden.
I remember this is 'Foxglove',
although sometimes it might be called 'Digitalis'.
I heard a story of Foxglove that when a fox hunted,
it uses theses flowers as gloves which does not make a sound.
If you are more interested in the reason of the name,
you could read Wikipedia about Etymology in 'Digitalis'.
They are fun!
It has many etymologies, it is proof that
people are interested in this so much,isn't it?
