1) クリフ・レールウエイ/ Cliff Railway

クリフ・レールウエイ/ Cliff Railway  : ★は、ブリッジノース / Bridgnorth で100年以上に渡って、運営されているケーブル・カー鉄道です。

英国で最も古く、最も急斜面のケーブル・カー鉄道だそうです。

ブリッジノースは、崖上のハイ・タウン/ High Town と崖下のロー・タウン/ Low Townに別れていて、二つをつなぐのがクリフ・レールウエイです。

ブリッジノース/ Bridgnorth に蒸気機関車が走っているのは知っていましたが、クリフ・レールウエイのことは知りませんでした。

Rの友人のJ&Sカップルが私達を案内してくれました。

麓の入り口
路線は、街の崖の麓と頂上を結んでいます。
片道チケットは買えません。往復チケットのみ販売。

Foot Entrance

The line links 'Low Town' and 'High Town'.
They do not sell single tickets, only returns.

Cliff Railway
The Cliff Railway  : ★ is a funicular railway which has operated for over 100 years in Bridgnorth.

It is said to be the oldest and steepest slope funicular railway in Britain.

Bridgnorth consists of 'High Town' on the cliff and 'Low Town' beneath the cliff and the Cliff Railway connects the two.

I knew there are steam locomotives running in Bridgnorth, though I did not know about the Cliff Railway.

R's friends, J & S couple brought us here.

脇の階段を上がって崖の上へ行くこともできます。

You can go up the stairs by the station and climb up the cliff.

200階段あるそうです... / It is said 200 steps....

駅はゲストハウス : 'Stoneway Guest House' と

'ティールーム'としても使用されています。

The station is also used as 'Stoneway Guest House' 

and with a 'Tea Room'

S is talking to a woman with dogs.

この子はどうして抱っこされているのかわかりません。

怪我をしているのかな？

理由はわかりませんが、この子の不服げな？情けなげな？様子に悲哀を感じます。

I do not know why this puppy is carried.

Is the puppy injured?

I do not understand the reason, the puppy seems to be dissatisfied? 
or to be miserable ?  

I feel the sorrow of its state.

聖マグダラのマリア教会、ブリッジノース

1238年に身廊、内陣、西側の塔はおそらく建てられました。

1234年にリチャードダマス /  Richard Dammas (?-?) によって礼拝堂が作られ

1294年以降に北の通路が追加されました。

Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Bridgnorth : ★

The nave, chancel and western tower were probably built c. 1238, 

and a north aisle was added, presumably after 1294, 

when a chantry service was founded in St. Mary's by Richard Dammas (?-?).

いくつか階段を見ましたが、それらが私有地に出るのか、
下の公道 : 'アンダー通り'に出られるのかわかりません。

I saw some stairs, but I do not know whether they would be on private land
 or public to reach 'Under the street'.

崖上にいるときに、Jがこの階段を降りてゆくと下の駅に出られると
教えてくれました。

When I was on the cliff, J told me that 
we could walk down these steps to the lower station.

右の道はクリフ・レイルウエイの崖上の駅に行き

真ん中が階段(上の写真)になっていて、崖下の駅に行きます。

The road on the right goes to the upper station of the Cliff Railway, 

the middle road (above) is the steps going to the lower station.

3) ブリッジノース鉄道駅 / Bridgnorth Railway Station

ブリッジノース鉄道駅 / Bridgnorth Railway Stationを直接訪ねる時間はありませんでしたが、崖の上から見ることができました。

サイト: ★ / ★

ブリッジノース鉄道駅は、保存鉄道であるセヴァン谷鉄道 / Severn Valley Railway の駅です。

もともとは、北はシューズベリー / Shrewsbury から南のハートルーリー /  Hartlebury を結ぶ路線でした。

現在は、ブリッジノース鉄道駅がセヴァン谷鉄道の北の始発駅になり、南はキッドミンスター街鉄道駅/  Kidderminster Town Railway Station.

駅は主な機関庫にもなっています。

ブリッジノース鉄道駅 

絵本にあるような、模型の世界にあるような駅です。

1861年に開通され、その後紆余曲折ありましたが

1965年にセヴァン・バレー鉄道協会が設立され保護されています。

 Bridgnorth Railway Station

The station looks like being in a model world 
or being in a picture book.

It was opened in 1861, after many twists and turns,

from 1965 onwards the Severn Valley Railway Society was formed 
and has preserved it.

I did not have time to visit Bridgnorth Railway Station directly, though I could see it from the top of the cliff.

Bridgnorth Railway Station is a station on the Severn Valley Railway heritage line.

Originally, to the north was a route connecting Shrewsbury to Hartlebury in the south.

Unfortunately the Shrewsbury - Bridgnorth section was closed, and currently the Bridgnorth Railway Station is the northern terminus.

The station is also home to the main engine shed.

1) 友人宅 / Friend's House

Rの友人、J&Sカップル宅に泊まりました。

Rは以前も泊まったことがありましたが、私は初めてでした。

とても居心地が良い、素敵な家でした。

We stayed in R's friends,  J&S couple house.

R had stayed here before, but this was my first time.

It is a very cozy, nice house.

美しい〜！/ It is beautiful~!

庭を散歩したかったのですが時間がなくてできず残念でした。
物干しに家族の暖かさを感じました。

I wanted to take a walk in the garden, but I was sorry that

I did not have time.
I felt the warmth of their family in the Clothes Drying Stand.

家の外観も門も室内も素敵でしたし、彼らの息子さんの絵も飾ってありましたが、プライベートな場所なので、ここには載せません。

The exterior of the house was nice as well as the gate and the interior, and they also decorated with their son's paintings, but here is private, so I do not show you.

私はクランペットが好きでしたが、そのことをすっかり忘れていました。
そのことを知らないのにSが朝食にこれを用意してくれて、感激！
クランペットは英国特有のパンです。

I like crumpets, but I had completely forgotten about liking them.

Even though S did not know about that, she had prepared this for breakfast,

so I was deeply impressed!

Crumpet is a bread (or cake?) peculiar to the UK.

私にクランペットを食べるチャンスを与えてくれた事と
私がそれを好きだったと思い出させてくれた二つの事に対して、
彼女に感謝しました。

I thank her for two things, giving me the chance to eat crumpet

and reminding me that I liked them.

思い出のミシンを上手に使用しています。
素敵〜！と思いました。
ここもプライベートですが、ここは許していただけるかと思いました....?

一度、友人 のJ&S宅に行き、その後、彼らにブリッジノース / Bridgnorth の街に連れて行ってもらいました。

ブリッジノースは、シュロップシャー / Shropshire州にある街で、英国で最も長い川、セヴァーン川 / River Severn が流れています。 

セヴァーン川というと、私はどうしても『修道士カドフェル シリーズ 』(1977 - 1994) [エリス・ピーターズ (1913-1995) 作] を思い出さずには入られません。

けれども、今回はカドフェルには関係なく、この街を訪れました。

River Severn 

We went to the friend's house once and then they took us to the city of Bridgnorth.

Bridgnorth is a city in Shropshire, with the longest river in Britain, the River Severn, running through the middle.

When I say the Severn River, I can not go without remembering 'Brother Cadfael Series' (1977 - 1994) [by Edith Mary Pargeter (1913-1995)] .

However, this time I visited this town unconnected with Cadfael.

セヴァーン川の両岸がブリッジノースの街です。

Both banks of the River Severn are Bridgnorth.

川の水は鉄分が多いのか、澄んでは見えません。

ですが、街の風景が美しく、その中に組み込まれる川も美しく感じられます。

Waters of the river might have a lot of iron, they do not look clear.

However, the scenery of the city is beautiful,

and the river is one of the parts of the beautiful view, so the river also felt beautiful.

ドームのある塔は教会: "聖マグダラのマリア教会、ブリッジノース"です。
 A tower with a dome is the "Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Bridgnorth".

川辺を歩きます。

かわいい家 / Cute House

ハズレディン製鉄所 / Hazledine's Foundry

1808年、この場所で世界初の蒸気機関車が

リチャード・トレビシック (下の絵) の設計によって作られました。

現在、その形跡が感じられるものはなく、この案内板のみがあります。

Hazledine's Foundry

In 1808, the world 's first steam locomotive in this place was made

to the design of Richard Trevithick, below.

There is nothing that can be seen nowadays, there is only this guide board.

リチャード・トレビシック / Richard Trevithick (1771 - 1833)

彼は、イギリスの機械技術者で、蒸気機関車の発明者です。

He was a British mechanical engineer and inventor of the steam locomotive.

ブリッジノースを選んだ理由のひとつに、蒸気機関車が現役で走っているということがありました。

蒸気機関車の駅は、まったく別の場所にあります。
(あとのセクションに蒸気機関車について載せます)

I chose Bridgnorth as a place for us to visit, one of the reasons for choosing the town was that steam locomotives are still running.

The station with the steam locomotives is in a completely different place.
(I will show about the steam locomotives in a later section.)

ブリッジノースの街を訪ねるためにセヴァーン公園の駐車場を使いました。

We used the parking lot of 'Severn Park' to visit the town of Bridgnorth.

ブリッジノース橋 / Bridgnorth Bridge : ★ 

ブリッジノース橋 

ここには、エルフレッド /  Æthelflæd (870頃 - 918/ 在位: 911-918)の治世には、すでに橋が架けられていました。

その後、橋は、作っては壊されました。

現在の橋は、1823年に作られたものです。

エルフレッドは、アルフレッド大王 (849 - 899 / 在位 : 871- 899)の娘で、マーシア国 / Mercia を911年から亡くなるまで統治しました。

Bridgnorth Bridge : ★ 

Here, the river was already bridged in the time of 
Æthelflæd (c 870 - 918 / r 911 - 918).

Bridges were made and broken repeatedly.

The current bridge was made in 1823.

Æthelflæd was the daughter of Alfred the Great (849 - 899 / r871 - 899), who ruled Mercia kingdom from 911 until she died.
