❻ - サセックスの旅 / The Trip in Sussex - South Downs Way - 29th of August in 2013

アルフリストン村を散策しました。

We walked in Alfriston 29th of August in 2013.

その後、村から"サウス ダウンズ ウエイ /South Downs Way "に向かいました。

Later we walked to the South Downs Way  from the village. 

メイン道路脇にある標識
村の中心地から向かいます。

The Sign is beside a main road.

私達は、ブルーの➡️："サウス ダウンズ ウエイ / South Downs Way "
を進みました。

We followed the Blue ➡️. : "South Downs Way ".

村から出るとすぐにこんな景色が！
The instant we left the village, this was our view.

橋を渡る
川は 'カックミア川'

Across the Bridge
The river is 'River Cuckmere'. 

狭い橋ですが、馬も渡ります。
ただし、騎乗者は馬から下ります。

This bridge is narrow, although horses can go across as long as
the rider gets off their horse.

These steps help a rider get on and off.

緑に囲まれたこんな道が好きです。
I like a path covered with green like this. 

のんびりした風景
Peaceful View 

これは、日本での表札に近いと思いますが、人の名前というより、
家の名前を表示しています。
ふくろうが好きな方の家でしょうか？

I think the house name plate is similar to family name plates in Japan.
Does this owner like owls?

急な登りで、R はちょっとげんなり.....でも私は行きたい！
The path went up steeply, so R was up apprehensive...., however, I would go!

片面の緑がちょっと途切れ、景色が見えました(下)
Green to one side broke, so we could see a view (See below).

そしてまた上り....
雨がふると、この溝は(小)川のようになるのかな？

Again Up....
If it rains here, this ditch might become a stream. 

上りの道から逸れる所を発見！
We found a place to escape the climb!

ワ〜！びっくり！
突然、こんなに広がっている景色が表れました。

WOW! STARING!
This view suddenly opens!

'海岸へ'の標識
海岸までは行くつもりはありませんが、村に戻る方向であると推測し、
この'フットパス/ Footpath'を進むことにしました。
フットパスの説明はここ→★

実はこの道に入らず、ず〜っとサウス ダウンズ ウエイを歩いてゆくと、
28日と30日に行った'ウィルミントンの巨人'/ 'Wilmington Giant 'もしくは
 : 'The Long Man in Wilmington'のヒルフィギュアのある丘
(後のブログセクションに載せます）にたどり着くのでした。
このときは、このことを知りませんでした。
ですが、たとえ知っていたとしても私達には、
そこまで歩く体力も気力もないのでした。

Sign to the Coast!
We wouldn't go to the coast, 
and we guessed this path would take us back to the village,
so we decided we would follow this Footpath. 

In fact, if we had not taken this path and followed the 'South Downs Way', 
we would have  reached a hill which has 
the 'Wilmington Giant '/ 'The Long Man in Wilmington'.
( I will put another event on 28th and 30th in my blog later.)
We did not know about it at this time.
However, even if we had known it, we did have strength and energy for that hill.

フットパスからの景色 

 Views from the Footpath

白い破片を見つけると、
私達が白亜(石灰質)の丘の上にいることをあらためて認識します。

When I found white fragments, again, I recognize we are on a chalk hill.

何かの宿泊施設なのか、個人住宅なのか？

Big House
Is that some type of accommodation or a private house?

金属の橋
度重なるカックミア川の氾濫に備えてでしょうか？
英国の田舎の風景では、珍しい金属の橋です。

 Metal Bridge
Is it metal to survive the River Cuckmere which might flood a lot?
This bridge is unusual being made of metal in the British countryside. 

広い敷地を突っ切るフットパス
Footpath crosses a large field. 

白い馬に惹かれる....
I am attracted by white horses....

"サウス ダウンズ ウエイ / South Downs Way "に戻る標識
The Sign shows we are back on the South Downs Way.

とても狭いフットパス
ここで向こうからやってきた数人と行き交いました。

1) ペンベシー城 / Penvensey Castle

イングリッシュ•へリテッジ : ★  が管理しています。

English Heritage : ★  looks after the castle. 

ペンベシー城 / Pevensey Castle へのフッロパス/ Footpath (小道)からの道を
諦めて、主要道路から到着を目指しました。

こちらからのアクセスは比較的容易でした。

土地勘がないので、先に案内の標識を見つけてしまうと、

そちらの方が良いのかもと安易に思ってしまったのです。

ペンベシー城はもともとローマ時代の要塞でした。

I gave up using the footpath to the castle and 

we used a main road to reach Pevensey Castle.

That was quite easy.

We did not know the area, 

we found the sign and  thought that way was for us.

The castle was originally a Roman Empire Fort. 

全容がわかりやすいかな？と思い、この看板を撮影しました。
I thought this photo makes it easy to understand the whole castle,
so I photographed this sign board.

お城の敷地へ入る門

お城の門へは、ぐる〜っとお城を回ります。
We walk around the castle to the castle gate.

お堀 / The Moat

ローマ帝国(BC27 - AD1453)後半、5世紀、'Saxon Shore'と呼ばれる軍の司令基地
(要塞)がドイツ方面(サクソン/フランキッシュ)からの侵略者(ヴァイキングの略奪行為と同様)に対して英国海峡と北海に面して設置されました。

ここは、そのひとつです。

他の要塞と同様、幾度かは忘れ去られ、再び侵略者または敵に対しての要塞として使用されてきました。

ペンベンシー城は、長い歴史の中にあり、その間に地形の変化もおこり、その時代時代によって修復がおこなわれました。(下の図参照）

ローマ帝国時代には、すぐ近くまで海がきていたのですが現在ではちょっと距離があります。

少なくとも、ここから海は見えません。

Penvensey Castle

In the 5th century AD this became one of a series of forts along the 'Saxon Shore' facing the English Channel and North sea against invasion by Saxon and Frankish ships (like Viking raiders).

As with other forts along the English Channel, sometimes they were abandoned and later reused and while Pevensy Castle has a long history, the landscape has also changed, so that the restorations of the fort depended on the times.
(See above picture)

In Roman times, the sea was very close to here, although now it is a little way away. 

Al least, we cannot see the sea from here.

2) ローマ時代の塀 / The Roman Wall

1930年の発掘で下記の写真部分が見つかりました。

ローマ時代の塀と現在の煙突
道を挟んだ向こうには、一般住宅が立ち並んでいます。
その煙突と古い塀のミックスがおもしろいな〜と思って撮影。
英国は今も昔も建造物が石(レンガ含)が多いので新旧並んでも
異質感があまりありません。(と思います）

The Roman Wall and Later Chimneys
I was interested in this view which is a mixture of the old wall 
and new-ish chimneys.
In Britain, many buildings have traditionally been made of stones and bricks,
 so if old and new are next to each other,
they do not have a strange atmosphere. (I think)

3) お城の中 / Inside Castle

水は大切〜！
殆どのお城には井戸があります。

Water is important! 
Most Castles have a well. 

大砲もあります
And Cannon, too.

窓や窓から見える景色が好き
I love windows and the views from windows. 


英国では子供達が遺跡の身近にいる気がします。
それは多くの遺跡に直接触れることができるので、
子供達がそこを遊び場にするからだと思います。

I feel children are familiar with ruins in Britain.
Because children can touch them directly,
 children can treat ruins as their playground.  

地下牢への案内版
地下牢もお城にはつきもの。
観光化されているお城では、よくお化け屋敷的に使用されています。

 Sign to Dungeon
Dungeons are commonly associated with castles.
If the castles are touristy enough,
they often use their dungeons as being haunted.
この階段をおりると地下牢があります。
長居はしたくない場所です。

The Dungeon is down these steps.
I would not be there any longer.

なのに、いつも撮影してしまいます。

4) 敷地内 / In The Area of the Castle

花 / Flowers 

うさぎも居ます。
彼(彼女)は、居ないふり....私は草です.... (笑)

There is a rabbit, too.
He or she pretends not to be....I am grass....(laugh)

親子連れもいます。
There is a father and his sons. 

帰ります。/ We Return.

5) お城の近所/ The Vicinity

赤い実の木
アオキか、ニワトコか、ナナカマドか?
実は消防署の前に真っ赤なこの木があったので、
おもしろい組み合わせだな〜と思って撮影。

In fact, this red tree stands in front of a fire station,
and I felt the combinations interesting, so I took this photograph. 

お城近くの一般の方の庭

ローズヒップ / Rose Hip
下記：Wikipediaより

ローズヒップ (rose hip) は、バラ科バラ属の植物（いわゆる「バラ」）の果実で
ある「ヒップ」は「尻」とは無関係で、本来は「ヒップ」だけでバラの果実を
意味する単語である。

ローズヒップといえば、私はローズヒップティがまず思い浮かびます。

酸っぱい〜！でもなんとなく身体が浄化される気がします。

他にも用途はたくさん....ジャム、シロップ、ワイン...etc.

見るだけでもかわいいですよね。

Rose Hip
If you say Rose Hip, for me, immediately it means Rose Hip Tea! Sour~! 

However, somehow I feel my body becomes purified.
It has many other uses, for instance, Jam, syrup and wine...etc. 
Just its look is lovely, isn't it?

ブラックベリー
ブラックラズベリーとは違うということを知りました。
 でも、両方ともキイチゴ属。

Blackberry
I found it is different from black Raspbery, however, both of them are Rubus genus.

これは何でしょう？
フューシアか、ホオズキか？

What is this? 
Fuchia ? or hōzuki (Physalis alkekengi / bladder cherry)?
