This section is about Fireworks and Chinese Dinner in Kobe.

Chinese Dinner

1) Kさんと / With K

With K
While researching for my trip to Kansai, I found a fireworks event called "Minato HANABI" held at Meriken Park.
(In Japanese Minato means Port and HANABI means fireworks)

The event involves fireworks being launched for about 10 minutes every day on five weekdays in October.

The Hotel Okura Kobe where I was staying was next to Meriken Park.

It was a weekday (18th of October) when I met my friend K who lives in Kobe.

Actually, I had met K two days earlier, on 16th of October, when I went to her restaurant, 'Kimitako' in Shukugawam Nishinomiya City for dinner with my friend, designer Riebelow.

It had been several years since I last spent private time with K.

We were going to see the Kawasaki Museum Revived Exhibition in the Kobe City Museumi, and then we were going to have dinner somewhere in Chinatown.

I asked K about "Minato HANABI", but she didn't know about it.

So we made a plan to go see "Minato HANABI" together before dinner!

HANABI" / "Minato HANABI"

View From My Hotel Room
After the Kobe City Museum, K and I spent the time in my hotel room
looking at the view and drinking beer until the fireworks started.

In Kobe, the 'Minato Kobe Maritime Fireworks Festival' is usually held every August at the Kobe Port, but it has been canceled since 2020 due to the spread of COVID-19.

"Minato HANABI" appeared as a replacement for that event.

【Postscript : March 2025】
The Minato Kobe Marine Fireworks Festival began in 1971 and ended in 2019, but the Minato HANABI, which began in 2022, will continue until 2024.

The crowds weren't so crowded that the place was filled, but it wasn't so deserted either.

It was the perfect crowd to watch a fireworks display.

We were able to get a good view of the fireworks from our position halfway around Meriken Park, so we did not walk right to the water's edge.

"Minato HANABI" was a 10-minute display, which was shorter than a normal fireworks display, but the spectacular fireworks that were launched one after the other were reminiscent of a normal fireworks finale, and were very satisfying.

We headed to Chinatown : Nankin-machi for dinner.

Chinese Dinner

Chinese Dinner
When I come to Kobe, I feel like eating Chinese food.

Before the trip, when K asked me,
"What do you want to eat?",
 I answered without hesitation,
"Chinese food!"

There are many Chinese restaurants in Chinatown.

When I lived in Kobe and even after I left Kobe, whenever I ate in Chinatown, I always went to 'Kobe Motomachi Annex Botanen'.

We've had many beers from these glasses.

Chopsticks Case

Steamed Chicken
Steamed chicken and whitebait salad

Stir-fried Bok Choy
Most dishes are available in three portions : S, M, and L.

Mostly we chose the M size.

For me, when it comes to Chinese food, I (we) ordered the classic dishes.

Although I didn't take a photo, we also ordered Sanxian Chow Mein: hard fried noodles with three kinds of fish and shellfish.

Vegetable Wrapped Pork Snack

Mapo Tofu

All the dishes were delicious. I was very satisfied!

I had a great time drinking, eating, and chatting with K.

Thank you very much.

Let's meet again~~~!

Kobe City Museum

Kobe City Museum
After spending time with my friends Izu and M, I met up with my friend K who lives in Kobe.

Izu and M headed to Kobe Airport to go to Okinawa.

It had been a long time since I last saw them, and I didn't know when
I would see them again, so I was sad to say goodbye.

However, I was able to meet up with K soon after, so the sadness of parting didn't last long.

I had arranged with K to see the 'Kawasaki Museum Revived Exhibition' in the Kobe City Museum, and we met in front of the exhibition venue.

  'Kawasaki Museum Revived'

Date : 15th of October, 2022 (Saturday)
 - 4th of December, 2022 (Sunday)
According their website in Japanese (translated by me)
"For the first time in 100 years, the legendary collection including national treasures will reunite. The museum of dreams is finally revived.
On 6th in September, 1890, Japan's first private art museum, the Kawasaki Museum of Art, opened at the Kawasaki residence in Nunobiki, Kobe City (near present-day JR Shin-Kobe Station).
The founder was  Kawasaki Shōzō (1837 - 1912) during the Meiji era, when Western culture was rapidly flowing into Japan, Shozo Kawasaki began collecting Japanese and Eastern art in order to protect it from anti-Buddhism and foreign outflows.
He opened the museum with the aim of showing these excellent works to the public, rather than keeping them secret.
The museum continued to be active after the death of Shozo Kawasaki, but the collection was dispersed in the wake of the financial crisis in the early Showa period.
The building of the museum was also lost due to disasters and other reasons, but the works that Shozo Kawasaki loved are still being carefully preserved and handed down both in Japan and overseas.
For the first time in about 100 years, this exhibition brings together these gems in Kobe again.
Please visit the Kawasaki Museum of Art, which will be revived for a limited time this fall."

As an aside, the oldest surviving private art museum in Japan is the 'Okura Museum of Art' (in Tokyo), founded by Ōkura Kihachiro (1837 - 1928).

Kawasaki Shōzō
(1837 - 1912)
Kawasaki Shōzō was a Japanese industrialist,
shipbuilder and politician.
He was the founder of the Kobe Kawasaki Zaibatsu and
Kawasaki Shipyards (now Kawasaki Heavy Industries).
He was an art collector and built the Kawasaki Museum of Art
 (Japan's first private art museum).
He was a member of the House of Peers.
He also founded the "Kobe Shimbun" newspaper in 1898
and opened the Kobe Kawasaki Bank in 1905.
I get the feeling that he was a 'self-made' man.
This from below

Wiki

Choshunkaku
(Built in 1899)
Kawasaki Shozo established a private art museum, 'Choshunkaku'
 in his own home.
Before Choshunkaku was built,
he had already built a private art museum next door.
A catalogue entitled "Choshunkaku Appreciation" was published
on the third anniversary of his death.
This from below

First of all, I was surprised that an individual was able to amass an art collection of this scale.

It is also clear that he had enormous financial resources.

However, how one spends their wealth depends on a person's thoughts or philosophy.

I have only followed Kawasaki's life through written summaries →Japanese Wiki.

Even from the outline of his life, one could sense his strong will and power, and I felt his collections exuded a sense of patriotism.

He made Japan economically strong and prevented Japanese art from leaking out of the country, and I believe his life was driven by love for his country.

He had a high level of aesthetic sense, and I felt that the things he collected were in the 'realm of beauty'.
(I'm sorry that my own level of aesthetic sense is too low to speak about his aesthetic sense, but I felt I had to say something.)

and other artists of the Kanō school.

 Leaflet
At first, I felt a little awkward about forcing K into my interest.
However, at the exhibition, I found out that her father had worked
for Kawasaki Heavy Industries and that she had come to
the exhibition out of her interest.
I was also relieved to know that she sometimes goes to Kyoto
with her sister to see exhibitions.

Normally, I buy exhibition catalogs, but this time I didn't buy one.

The reason is that catalogs were too heavy for me (Laugh).

When my husband R is with me I usually buy them even though they are heavy, but this time he was in the UK so I couldn't rely on him.

I thought the idea for this exhibition was very good.
Thanks to all the curators and everyone involved for your hard work.
It was a great exhibition.
Thank you very much.

Permanent Exhibition

Permanent Exhibition
I arrived at the museum earlier than the appointed time with K, so
I was able to see a bit of the permanent exhibition (ground floor).

Public photography was permitted in the permanent exhibition.

I used to live in Kobe, but I didn't have much interest in this museum then.

This time, I was able to learn a little bit about Kobe's history and background, and I found it very interesting.

The next time I visit Kobe, I'd like to take my time and visit here.

Cafe

This from below
Cafe
The museum's cafe, "TOOTH TOOTH 凸凹茶房", which is part of the same chain as the restaurant where I had lunch with another friends, has been in business since 2019.

The cafe retains the architectural styles of the Meiji era and Showa Period, and its atmosphere feels like the 'good old days'.

To me, that atmosphere also feels 'Kobe-like.'

At the back of the cafe, there is a special room that uses materials and furniture from the Meiji era foreign-style house "Old Thomsen House", as well as furniture from the same era (including replicas).

According to the museum's website in Japanese, about the Old Thomsen House,
(translated by me)
"The Old Thomsen House was built in 1900 by German sailor Andreas Thomsen in what is now Suwayama-cho, Chuo-ku, Kobe.
When the Old Thomsen House was demolished, an investigation was carried out, and the materials and furniture were donated to the museum."

According to the museum's website in English
"The new café accentuates the functional beauty of Art Deco and invites visitors into a comfortable space filled with the ambience of 1935—the year when the original architecture was built.
There is also a special room that has incorporated materials from the Thomsen House, one of the western-style residences of the Meiji era known as Ijinkan. "

In Kamakura, where I live, there are many cafes and restaurants that have been renovated from old Japanese-style houses.

Like Kamakura, in Kobe, there may have been many shops and so on that utilize old Western-style houses and buildings.

 Menu
I took pictures of the menu, but not of what we actually ordered.
I don't even remember what we ordered.
I guess I was too busy chatting.

After that, we went to my hotel room, had some beer, and waited for "Minato HANABI" to start at Meriken Park.
