1) 古民家 / Old Folk House

友人Mと友人Izuと私は、出雲大神宮を後にし、Mがランチを予約した 'Beans Cafe' へ行きました。

この日のメインは、美山観光でした。

美山の集落は、国の重要伝統的建造物群保存地区に文化庁によって、選定されています。

 'Beans Cafe' は 、美山観光のはじめの一歩、素敵なカフェでした。

思わず、わ〜！という声が出てしまう、立派な建物です。

It's a brilliant building that made me exclaim in surprise.

Old Folk House

After leaving Izumo Daijingū Shrine, my friends M, Izu and I went to 'Beans Cafe' where M had made a lunch reservation.

The main event of the day was sightseeing in Miyama.

The village of Miyama has been designated as an Important Preservation District for a Group of Traditional Buildings by the Agency for Cultural Affairs (ACA).

'Beans Cafe' is a wonderful cafe, the first step of our trip in Miyama.

茅葺の古民家をリノベーションしたそうです。

It was an old thatched roof house, now renovated.

この家は、道を挟んだカフェの前にあります。

This house is located in front of the cafe across the street.

M took these photographs.

湯葉屋さんが直営しているカフェです。
ゆばづくりの体験(有料)ができるようですが、
私達はランチをいただいただけです。

This is a cafe run directly by a yuba shop.
You can experience making yuba (for a fee),
but we only had lunch there.
Yuba is a processed soybean food.
Yuba is a thin skin that forms on the surface of soy milk 
when it is heated.

建物の外見は和風ですが、店内は、椅子とテーブルの洋風な部分、掘り炬燵式のお座敷部分(でもモダン感じ)、縁側席もあります。

明るく、清潔感がある空間です。

この年 (2022年) の4月にオープンしたばかりでした。

The exterior of the building is Japanese-style, but inside there are Western-style areas with chairs and tables, a tatami room with a sunken kotatsu (but with a modern feel), and veranda seating.

It is a bright and clean space.

It just opened in April of this year, 2022.

とても美味しくいただきました。

ゆばという食品が京都らしいし、建物も美しいし、店内はおしゃれカフェですし、Mの配慮がとても感じられました。

M、素敵な場所を、ランチに選んでくれて、本当にありがとうございました。

そうそう、ここはコーヒーにも力を入れていましたので、夫Rへのお土産にコーヒー豆を買いました。

The meal was delicious.

The yuba food is so typical of Kyoto, the building is beautiful, the interior is a stylish cafe, and M's consideration was really evident.

Thank you so much, M, for choosing such a wonderful place for lunch.

Oh, and they also specialize in coffee, so I bought some coffee beans as a souvenir for my husband, R.

追記 (2025年1月25日)

このセクションは、約2年、更新を止めてしまいました。

以前も、更新を止めては、再開ということを繰り返していました。

ですが、今回の未更新は最も長く、大きな理由もなく、単に私のやる気の問題でした。

2025年に入り、重い腰を上げ、ようやく再開です。

Addendum (25th of January, 2025)

I stopped updating this section for about two years.

I had stopped updating and started again many times before.

But this was the longest period while I had stopped updating, and there was no big reason for it, it was just a matter of my motivation.

Now in 2025, I finally managed to get myself to start again.

1) 神体山 / Sacred Mountain (Shintaisan)

出雲大神宮は、御蔭山の山麓にあり、御蔭山は、古代より、神体山

 (シンタイサン) として自然信仰の対象になっています。

下記、Wikiより

"神体山（しんたいさん）とは主に神道において神が宿るとされる

山岳信仰や神奈備（かむなび・神々が神留まる森林を抱く山）の山をいう。"

また、「霊峰」とも呼ばれ、霊峰富士とされる富士山が代表的なものである。また峠や坂という小さな峰も神域や神が宿る場所とし畏怖畏敬された。"

その信仰は、神宮創建以前よりあったと言われています。

従来存在した民間信仰に、'日本の神' への信仰が上手に融合された状態になっていると感じます。

日本では、多々見られる現象ではないかと思います。

祭神は、大国主大神 (オオクニヌシノオオカミ) : 大国主とその妻の

三穂津姫尊 (ミホツヒメノミコト/ 三穂津姫 : ミホツヒメ) です。

私たちは、参拝を終え、本殿より奥の境内を歩いてみました。

御蔭山の "磐座 (イワクラ/ 境内案内図 ⑬ : ★)" へお参りする人は、

社務所で受付をし、'たすき' を渡されます(下の写真)。

私達はそこまでの信仰心と時間もないので、自由に散策できる範囲で散策しました。

案内図 ⑨の '磐座' は、自由散策域なので、行きました。

下記、Wikiより

"磐座（いわくら、磐倉/岩倉）とは、古神道における岩に対する信仰のこと。あるいは、信仰の対象となる岩そのもののこと。"

This sign shows us, 

"Those who wish to visit the "Iwakura"(Map ⑬) 

on Mt. Sacred Mikage check in at the shrine office 

and are given a 'Tasuki'."

⑬"磐座"への鳥居

If you have the Tasuki, you could go through here 

and visit the 'Iwakura'. 

According to Wiki about  "Iwakura" , 

"Iwakura (岩倉/ 磐座 / 磐倉) refers to the belief in rocks 

as Yorishiro containing Kami in ancient Shinto. 

It also refers to the rock itself, which is the object of worship."

According to Wiki about  "Tasuki",

" in ancient Japan they were an exclusive accessory used 

by the Shinto clergy during ceremonies."

We didn't have that much faith or the time,

 so we just wandered around freely.

Sacred Mountain (Shintaisan)

My friend M, who lives in Osaka, picked up another friend Izu and I in front of Shin-Osaka Station in her car, and we visited Izumo Daijingū Shrine.

The Shrine is located at the foot of Mt. Mikage.

Since ancient times, Mt. Mikage has been an object of nature worship as a sacred mountain (Shintaisan).

It is said that this belief existed before the Shrine was built.

I feel that this is a case where the belief in "Japanese Gods" has been skillfully combined with the folk beliefs that existed before.

I think this is a phenomenon that is often seen in Japan.

The enshrined deities are Ōkuninushi : Ōkuninushi no Ōkami and his wife, Mihotsuhime no Mikoto or Mihotsu-hime.

After worshipping at the Shrine, we walked around the precincts behind the main shrine.

We went to 'Iwakura' ⑨ on the guide map, as it is a free walking area.

鎮守の杜入り口
山へ入って行きます。

Entrance to the Shrine Forest : Chinjyu-no-mori
We were going into the mountains.

道は舗装され広がりを見せる入り口ですが
踏み入れるのを躊躇わせる雰囲気を感じました。
これは、畏敬の気持ちなのかもしれません。

The footpath to the entrance is paved and wide, 

but I felt an aura of hesitation about stepping in.

Perhaps this was a feeling of awe.

2) 鎮守の杜 / Shrine Forest : Chinjyu-no-mori

A. 注連縄の岩 / Rocks with Shimenawa

鎮守の杜・境内にはたくさん注連縄 (シメナワ)をかけた岩があります。

古代の信仰対象は、山そのものだったり、岩だったりと聞いています。

ここは、通常の神社(神社本庁に属する神社: 伊勢神宮下)とは違い、アニミズム要素が強いように感じました。

自然の神を祀る、原始の信仰と私は感じました。

注連縄  : 神域・聖域を外界から隔てる結界として用いられる縄。

Shimenawa : "A rope used as a barrier to separate sacred areas
from the outside world."

Rocks with Shimenawa

Within the shrine forest : Chinjyu-no-mori and grounds, there are many rocks with Shimenawa. 

According to Wiki about Shimenawa, 

"Shimenawa (標縄/注連縄/七五三縄, lit. 'enclosing rope') are lengths of laid rice straw or hemp rope used for ritual purification in the Shinto religion."

According to AI about Shimenawa,

"The Japanese rope shimenawa translates to "sacred rope" in English."

I've heard that in ancient times, the objects of worship were mountains themselves or rocks.

Unlike regular shrines (shrines belonging to the Association of Shinto Shrines: Ise Jingu-shita), this shrine seemed to have a strong animistic element.

I felt this was a primitive faith that worships the gods of nature.

B. 崇神天皇社 / Emperor Sujin Shrine

崇神天皇 (スジンテンノウ/ 148 BC - 30 BC <118歳> /
在位: 伝承の時代（古墳時代） : 97 BC – 30 BC / 第10代天皇)
によって、出雲大神宮が再興されたと伝えられています。

It is said that Izumo Daijingū Shrine was rebuilt by
Emperor Sujin (148 BC - 30 BC <118 years old> /
 Reign : Traditional Period (Kofun Period) : 97 BC - 30 BC /

"当宮は崇神天皇により再興されたとの社殿 (社伝？) が伝わっています。
この崇神天皇は歴代10代目ですが、『日本書紀』によれば「御肇国天皇」（ハツクニシラススメラミコト）と記され、実際に存在した最初の天皇と推測され、その御業績を神格化したのが初代神武天皇ではないかとも考えられています。"

崇神天皇は、神話の世界と現実の世界の狭間に現在位置しているのですね。

According to 'the Izumo Daijingū Shrine website : Guide map ⑮'

(translated by me), 

"The Shrine's biography says that this shrine was revived by Emperor Sujin.

The Emperor was the 10th, but according to the 'Nihon Shoki' he is recorded as "Hatsukunishirasu Sumera-mikoto", and is presumed to have been the first emperor to actually exist, and it is thought that the first Emperor Jimmu may have been the one who deified his achievements."

Emperor Sujin currently is positioned between the world of myth and the world of reality, isn't he?

C. 動植物 / Flora and Fauna

人の手は入っているように感じられます。

I feel here has been crafted by hands.

シロナンテン (白南天)
南天に '白' があるとは知りませんでした。
一般の庭では見たことがありません。
シロナンテン(白南天)は、最終樹高は1~2mなのだそうです。

White Nandina

White Nandina is Shiro-nanntenn in Japanese.

I didn't know there was a 'White' one in Nandina.

I've never seen one in an ordinary garden.

The final height of White Nandina is said to be 1-2m.

山でカニを見つけて驚きました。
(残念ながらこの写真のカニに焦点があっていません)
初めての経験ではありませんが、珍しいことです。
'アカテガニ' という名前らしいです。

Mountain Crab

I was surprised to find a crab in the mountains.

(Unfortunately the crab is out of focus in this photo)

It's not the first time I've seen one, but it's quite rare.

Apparently, they're called 'Akategani' in Japanese :

  Red-clawed Crab.

見上げれば...
お天気が良ければ、木々の向こうに青空が見えるのでしょう。

Look Up...
If the weather is good, I can see the blue sky beyond the trees.

D. 上の社 / Upper Shrine

上の社 (カミノヤシロ) ; 案内図⑭

素戔嗚尊（スサノオノミコト）と

櫛稲田姫尊（クシイナダヒメノミコト)が

祀られています。

スサノオが八岐大蛇 (ヤマタノオロチ)から救ったのが

クシイナダヒメです。

Upper Shrine : Guide Map ⑭

The deities enshrined here are Susanoo-no-Mikoto 

and Kushinada-hime-no-Mikoto.

Kushinada-hime was the one whom Susanoo saved from the Yamata-no-Orochi (Japanese Dragon with eight heads), 

the giant snake with eight heads.

上の社は、一間社流造 (イッケンシャナガレヅクリ)です。
{桁行(正面)の柱間が1間(柱が2本)であれば一間社流造}

下記、神社のサイトから
"上の社本殿は向拝 (コウハイ)を設けるなど出雲大神宮本殿を
模倣した流造ですが、その造りは一間社(イッケンシャ)と
珍しい構造で、創建は文化10 (1813) 年と
擬宝珠 (ギボシ) に刻まれています。”

Upper Shrine
The upper shrine is a one-bay shrine in the Nagarezukuri style.
{If the space between the columns on the front is one bay
(two columns), it is an Ikkensha Nagarezukuri style}
From the shrine's website below (translated by me)
"The main hall of the upper shrine is Ikkensha : one of  Nagare-zukuri style that imitates the main hall of the Izumo Daijingū Shrine, for example the entrance gable : Kohai,  but its construction is a rare one-bay shrine, and the date of its founding is inscribed on the gable of Giboshi,1813."
Giboshi is a traditional architectural decoration found on the top of the pillars of bridges, shrines, temples, stairs, and verandas (handrails, parapets).

E. 稲荷社/ Inari Shrine

稲荷社
宇迦之御魂神 (ウカノミタマノカミ) が祀られています。
宇迦之御魂神は、五穀豊穣の神様。
明確な記述はありませんが、古くから女神様として
考えられてきました。
五穀豊穣から商売繁盛へも広がって、商売される方が
よく稲荷神社へお参りするように私は思っています。

Inari Shrine

Uka no Mitama is enshrined here.

The Goddess (God) of abundant harvests.

Although there is no clear description, 

she has been considered a Goddess since ancient times.

I believe that the meaning of abundant harvests has expanded

 to include prosperity in business, and that business people 

often visit Inari Shrines.

(There are many Inari Shrines in Japan)

F. 御影の滝/ Mikage Waterfall 

地図の説明より

" '御蔭の滝'は竜神乃神をお祀りする滝として、いにしえより地域の源として崇められています。"

" 'Mikage Waterfalls' are dedicated to the Dragon God and 

has been revered as the water source of the region since 

ancient times."

3) 本殿方面へ / Towards Main Hall

この日帰り旅行は、Mが主に企画してくれ、彼女が予約したランチ

時間に迫っていました。

きっと私がゆっくり見すぎて、撮影に時間をかけすぎて予定を遅らせてしまったのです。

ですが、彼女は急かせることもせず、好きにさせてくれていました。

このままでは、間に合わなくなったので、がレストランへ電話をかけて予約時間を遅らせる交渉をしてくれました。

私達は少し急足で、駐車場へ向かいました。

車もMが出してくれ、運転も彼女がしてくれました。

M、ありがとうございました！

Some of the leaves have started to change colour and it's beautiful.

Towards Main Hall

M was the one who organized this day trip, and it was almost time for her lunch reservation.

I guess I was looking too slowly and taking too long to take photos, which delayed the schedule.

But she didn't rush me and just let me do what I wanted.

If we continued like this, we wouldn't be able to make it in time, so she called the restaurant and negotiated to delay the reservation time.

We walked a little briskly to the car park.

M provided the car and drove as well.

出雲大神宮は、静謐な雰囲気と畏敬を感じさせる雰囲気と世俗的な

雰囲気が入りじまっていました。

不思議な空間、場所だな〜と感じました。

Izumo Daijingū is a mixture of a tranquil atmosphere, a reverent atmosphere, and a worldly atmosphere.

I felt it was a mysterious space and place.
