Tate Britain - "To see the Van Gogh Exhibition", 1st of August, 2019

Tate Britain

National Gallery of British Art

Mostly I do not enter from here,
but enter through the southwest entrance.
As soon as you go through the entrance, there is a ticket office.
The original building : this part including the entrance hall, below
was designed by Sidney R. J. Smith (1858-1913).
Opened in 1897 as a branch of the National Gallery :
National Gallery of British Art.
In 1970, the building was Grade II listed.

Tate Britain
My purpose in Tate Britain on this day was "THE EY EXHIBITION VAN GOGH AND BRITAIN.

Though Tate Britain has not only special exhibitions such as this Exhibition, but also permanent exhibitions.

I enjoy these exhibitions if I have the opportunity to go to Tate Britain.

This time, I went around each venue in the same way.

Among them, the Frank Bowling (1934) Exhibition :  was my most memorable.

This day I first knew of the artist called Frank Bowling and was attracted to his works.

I'll write about him in the next section.

Sculptures are displayed in each circular corner.

It is a grand building.
It was built on the site of Millbank Prison in 1897.
I feel that its impression is left in the design of the front entrance hall.
I don't know if it was intentionally or not.

"The Rescue of Andromeda" 1893 :
by Henry Charles Fehr (1867 -1940)
Scene from Greek mythology
We see this scene in paintings, too.
The story, that a hero falls in love with a beauty at first sight
and rescues her, which is liked by many people.
At the time of photographing, I had mistakenly thought that
it was a scene of the defeat of the dragon by Saint George.

Greek mythology : "Rescue of Andromeda"
Ethiopian Queen, Cassiopeia exclaimed her beauty was better than the Nereids : Godesses : Nymphai
so the Nereids were angry, as was their father, Poseidon who let a monster (Cetus) devastate Ethiopia.

To suppress it, her daughter Andromeda had to be sacrificed to the monster.

Andromeda was bound with a chain to a rock pounded by the waves.

After Perseus defeated Medusa, one of the three Gorgon's sisters, he held Medusa's head and passed by.

Perseus fell in love with Andromeda at first sight, and showed Medusa's neck to the monster, turning the monster into stone, and rescuing her.

Andromeda later became his wife and later Athena made her into sky as the constellation : Andromeda.

"THE EY EXHIBITION VAN GOGH AND BRITAIN" :

Tate Britain held "THE EY EXHIBITION VAN GOGH AND BRITAIN.

Held : 27 March – 11 August 2019

Needless to say,  Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853 - 1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter.

In high school I decided on my journey in art, so I had visited quite a few exhibitions of famous artists, although I haven't visited large-scale exhibitions about them for around the last 10 years.

During my stay in Britain, I was planning a trip to the Netherlands which would include the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
About the Van Gogh Museum, below.

Here, I felt a connection, and by all means, go to Tate's "Van Gogh Exhibition"!

I went  there.

Intelligent Van Gogh

Intelligent Van Gogh
This is the first exhibition that explores the relevance of Van Gogh to Britain. →  (film)

Young Van Gogh (1853 - 1890) spent nearly three years in Britain between 1873 and 1876.

He knew four languages, including English, which he spoke and read well.

He loved the work of Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870) and also read many works by other British writers.

My image of Van Gogh  had been that he passionately headed to the canvas and had a fit.

So I was surprised that he was fluent in plural languages, and read quietly, and furthermore that he was a teacher and an art dealer in Britain.

I can imagine that the young man was looking for himself while reading.

While in Britain, he bought about 2,000 prints in a less than rich life.

They said that the beautiful lines of the prints have influenced his work since.

In the 1880s he decided to become a painter.

Just as Dickens wrote about the lives of the ordinary people, Van Gogh sought the material among the ordinary people.

For me, the above : '2) Intelligent Van Gogh' was the most significant impression in this Exhibition.

(From the Leaflet)

Theodorus van Gogh (1857 -1891) was a Dutch art dealer who
supported Van Gogh throughout his lifetime.
After leaving Britain, Van Gogh went to France, relying on Theo,
and begins his career as a painter.
Van Gogh's work may not have existed without Theo's understanding and help.

Influences

Francis Bacon (1909 -1992)
David Bomberg (1890 -1957)

Influences
This exhibition is divided into two parts.

Firstly Van Gogh's experiences in London, the art and literature he found interesting, and later on the influence they had on Van Gogh as an artist.

Second, it explored the influence of Van Gogh's art and life on British artists up to the 1950s.

Van Gogh-inspired British artists such as
Francis Bacon (1909 -1992),
David Bomberg (1890 -1957) and
young painters of Camden Town Group.

According to their website,
"The Camden Town Group were a British post-impressionist group founded by Walter Sickert (1860 -1942) in London in 1911."

The story is different, but there is a hypothesis that Walter Sickert may be the true culprit in the serial murder case, "Jack the Ripper"in 1888.
(When I see a photograph of him in Wiki, his face makes me feel that he might have been.)

"In 2004 the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, in its article on Sickert, dismissed any claim that he was Jack the Ripper as 'fantasy'." (From Wiki)

The  Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam will be posted on a later blog.
