アルフリストン村の散策と"サウス ダウンズ ウエイ / South Downs Way " 散策後に、
車でセブン シスターズへ向かいました。
現在、ここは主にナショナルトラストが運営管理しています。
私はここに複数回来ていますが、なんだか、いつも時間に追われているような時間帯で、ゆっくりと見学した覚えがありません。
この日も夕方になってから来ました。

| Birling Gap ナショナル トラスト：★によって維持され、 カフェ、ショップ、ビジターセンターになっています。 崖の端は建物ぎりぎりまできています。 政府は、この建物に価値があると判断していないので、 海岸堤防を作る計画を持っていません。 やがて浸食によってここはなくなると言われています。 Birling Gap is managed by the National Trust, there is a cafe, a shop and a visitor centre. The building stands almost on the edge of the cliff. The Government has decided the building is not important, so it does not have a plan for sea defence. They say the building will disappear one day. |

After walking in Alfriston and South Downs Way, we went to Seven Sisters by our car.
I have been here a few times, however, always somehow I haven't had enough time for here, or I have been pressed for time, so I do not remember being relaxed here.
On this day too, we visited here early in the evening.

| 駐車場の壁 フリント/ Flint とチョーク/ Chalkで壁を作っています。 この地を表現するとても良いアイディアだと思いました。 Car park Wall The walls are made of flint and chalk. I felt this is very good idea for representing this spot.  花の配置もいいな〜 It is a good way of setting the flowers. |
ナショナルトラストのオフィスとショプ/ Office and Shop of National Trust
柵は、波 (崖かも？）とチョークを表しています。(下の写真右)
The fence represents waves (or cliffs) and chalk. (On the right in below photograph)
3)白亜の崖 / White Cliffs

| 崖崩れ 右端の崖下は、最近崩れ落ちたあとです。 (下の写真は近距離から) Landslip On the right the cliff is whiter having had a landslip recently. (Below is a close-up.)  |

| みんな、ちょっと崖より離れたところで寛いでいます。 とはいっても人に寄っては離れているとは思えない距離かもしれませんね。 Everybody relaxes with a little distance from the cliffs. Even though I say 'distance', some people do not think even here has distance, do they? |

| チョークに挟まるフリント / Flint フリント ；燧石(火打石) : 石英 ; クォーツ/ Quartz の一つ
私は英国の大学で陶芸を学びました。そのとき、釉薬を作る材料に
クォーツもフリントもあり、同じようなものだと教わりました。
厳密にいえば、違うのでしょうが、どちらをその釉薬に使ったかどうかを
焼成後に判断できる人は少ないのではないかと思います。
Flint is a type of Quartz. I studied Ceramics in a British University. When I made glaze, I learnt that Flint and Quartz are very similar materials. Strictly speaking they might be different, however, I wonder how many people can judge the difference after firing, maybe only a very few people can judge. |

ちなみにこの'ビーチィ/ Beachy'はビーチ/ 浜辺から由来しているわけではなく、
古フランス語で美しい岬 (Beau Chef) から来ています。
"ビーチィ ヘッド"で、一番高い部分は162mもあります。 Here is a small part of Beachy Head. Seven Sisters is a part of Beachy Head, too.
By the way, Beachy did not come from 'Beach',
it came from "Beautiful Headland" (Beau Chef) ; the old French name. The highest point of Beachy Head is 531feet (162m). |

| 前日(28日)に行ったシーフォード/ Seaford の崖が左に見えます。 I see the cliffs of Seaford on the left in this photograph which we visited the day before (28th). |

砂浜でなく、石の浜ですが、人々は気にしないのです。
The beach is not sand, but pebbly, although people do not mind.
Walking Again on the South Downs Way
セブン シスターズ(ナショナルトラストのオフィス）からイーストボーンに向かう、白亜の崖上は、"サウス ダウンズ ウエイ/ South Downs Way"が続いています。
The South Downs Way continues just behind the white cliffs from Seven Sisters (National Trust Office) to Eastbourne.

何故に若い子達は崖ふちに立ちたがる....
彼らの冒険心か、軽卒さか、虚栄心か？
ウ〜ん、ネガティブに受け取りがちなへなちょこな私 (苦笑)
Why do young people tend to stand close to the edge of the cliffs?
Maybe it is their adventurous spirit or carelessness or vanity....
Well I tend to feel negatively about them, I am weak. (Wry)

もっとイーストボーン/ Eastbourne(東)へすすむと海の中に灯台が見えるようですが、私達はそこまで行かずに引き返しました。
その灯台は今は使用されていません。
(上の写真は西に向かって撮影。文と写真があっていなくて、ごめんなさい)
Further to the East towards Eastbourne people can see a lighthouse in the sea.
However, we did not go that far. The lighthouse is not used now.

7) ファージョンを追って/ Following Farjeon
エリナー•ファージョン (1881
- 1965) は、'セブン
シスターズ'について、
物語:『ファージョン作品集5;
ヒナギク野のマーティン•ピピン』
第４話："ウィルミントンの背高男"
の中で書いています。
彼女は、セブン シスターズを尼僧としてでなく(尼僧という見方があります）、
ちょっと不思議な7人の姉妹として書いています。

その姉妹達が白亜の崖になる話が入っています。
ちなみに『ヒナギク野のマーティン•ピピン』は『リンゴ畑のマーティン•ピピン』の続編です。

Following Farjeon
Eleanor
Farjeon (1881
- 1965) wrote about 'Seven Sisters' in her story:
'The Long Man of Wilmington' : the fourth story in "Martin Pippin in the Daisy Field".
She did not write about 'Seven Sisters' being nuns, but wrote about as 7 little fantasy sisters.
The fourth story includes a story in which the 7 sisters became white cliffs.
And also a title : 'The Long Man of Wilmington' came from 'The Long Man of Wilmington' the hill figure .
By the way, "Martin Pippin in the Daisy Field" is a sequel to "Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard".
