Auska
  A. 古墳 / Ancient Tombs

Ancient Tumulus
I first heard about Kitora Tumulus in this Nara trip.

Kitora Tumulus is located in Asuka VillageTakaichi-gun, Nara Prefecture and about 1Km to the south of Takamatsuzuka Tumulus.

I was surprised by Asuka village site :  (in English)  because the information is not only about Kitora Tumulus and Takamatsuzuka Tumulus but also other many ancient Tumuli.

I was surprised because I am ignorant, because it is fairly common knowledge that Asuka village was the birthplace of the "Centralized Law State" : "Centralized Ritsuryō Nation" and it is known that many palaces and historic sites from the Asuka Period have been excavated.

Asuka is known as "the Hometown of the Heart of Japan", so of course there is a lot of  information about the many ancient Tumuli on the site of Asuka village.

There is Fantasy...

There is Fantasy...
I found a leaflet of the "National Asuka Historical Park" (English version ; I could not find Japanese version), and a lot of interesting stones are introduced.
Official Website :  in English

In the afternoon of our last day in Nara I felt 'Nara' might be a more interesting place than Kyoto.

Probably the reason is that Nara's history is older than Kyotos', so there are many unclear points, leaving more room for imagination and having more primitive elements, for me Nara is more attractive. (Kyoto is wonderful, as Kyoto.)

I already feel fantasy in the sound of 'ASUKA'.

Someday, I would like to travel to see these stones.

Four Gods and Astronomical Chart

Four Gods and Astronomical Chart
The Kitora Tumulus is painted inside with the Four Gods : Four Symbols, one on each wall in the east, west, south and north ;
Azure Dragon : Seiryu,
White Tiger : Byakko
Black Tortoise : Genbu.

My favorite Four Gods!

In addition, the Twelve Branches animals-headed figures with human body are painted under the Four Gods on the walls.

On the ceiling, an astronomical chart was drawn.

It is too wonderful! It is currently thought that the Ancient Tumulus was made around the end of the 7th Century to the beginning of the 8th Century.

Inside

The inside is about 1 m in width, about 2.6 m in length, about 1.3 m in height.

Actual mural paintings can be seen only for a certain period,
but at this time they could not be seen.

The centerpiece of the Experience Hall is this real size model chamber, though as I entered the museum as one of our tour group, here was so crowded that I did not go inside and see it.

In the hall, I felt that the display and the contents were good, but because of the crowd and the short visiting time, I could not see there calmly.

Since the actual tomb scene is located behind the Experience Hall, I looked at inside hurriedly, I went outside for the actual Tumulus.

Same Age as Ebisu beer

It is a gorgeous approach.

Same Age as Ebisu beer
Kashihara Shrine was founded in 1890, located in the east foot of Mt. Unebi which is in Kashihara CityNara Prefecture.

As a shrine, I think it is relatively new, however, it has been there for over 125 years.
Official website:  (only in Japanese)

I did not know Kashihara Shrine at all before this Nara Trip.

Aside from that, my favorite Ebisu beer has been released in the year Kashihara Shrine was founded.

Ebisu beer is the same age as Kashihara Shrine ...Great Ebisu!.... and I am impressed by my enjoyment (laugh).

I found an interesting film site called "Sapporo Year Legend", like a beer myth (?).

If you like beer and myths and mystery access it! → (Unfortunately only in Japanese)

To the World of Mythology

Amaterasu-ōmikami

Too long ago, history and mythology are mixed, it is difficult to decide what is fact.

In Japan, regarding the establishment of the Emperors that can not be separated from myths, and I think other countries have no right to say anything to Japan at all (especially if the country does not have much history!) .

Even though they are the same nation, some people believe, others will not believe.

So this Kashiwara Shrine enshrines the Japanese first Emperor,
 Emperor Jimmu (r 660 BC - 585 BC) and
Empress Hitataraisuzu-hime-no-mikoto (?-?).

Before he became Emperor Jinmu, he was called
'Kamuyamato-iwarehiko-no-mikoto'.

From his paternal side his right came from Amaterasu-ōmikami's blood line and from his maternal side came the blood of 'Izanagi & Izanami' : God and Goddess of 'Kuniumi': 'Creation of Japan'.

Amaterasu-ōmikami's parents also are 'Izanagi & Izanami' : God and Goddess of 'Kuniumi', so they are the cognate families.

'Kamuyamato-iwarehiko-no-mikoto'(Emperor Jinmu) : Iwarehiko lived until 45 years old in Takachiho Palace, Hyūga Province.

Later 'Iwarehiko' headed eastern expedition,
following  Yatagarasu  : Great Raven which Amaterasu-ōmikami had sent,
he conquored Yamato, decided to place the capital in Kashihara in the southeast of Mt. Unebi, (Modern day Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture).
He had a lawful wife, a daughter of Ōmononushi : Hitataraisuzu-hime-no-mikoto
and ascended to the throne, becoming Emperor Jinmu.

I think the myth is a very excellent artwork in that reality, imagination and 'circumstances' combine well.

When passing through South God Gate, we can see a large site.
I can see Mt. Unebi beyond Ge-Haiden : Outside Worship Hall.

Looking at Main Hall  : Nai-Haiden from Ge-Haiden : Outside Worship Hall
General pilgrims can not reach the main shrine.
Shrines and temples from ancient times are quite friendly to general pilgrims,
however, since this is still a new shrine, it seems a bit of vanity is needed.
There is nothing here to be registered as a World Heritage Site ....

I had bought some amulets in Yakushi-ji Temple, although here I realized I had not bought any for myself.

If I did not buy amulets as souvenirs here, there would not be another chance, I bought them for myself and friends as well.
(I should have bought them before .... a little regret, however, I thought it was better than nothing.)
