1) ミドルズブラ / Middlesbrough

ミドルズブラは、工業都市として知られています。

ミドルズブラ・フットボール・クラブ/ Middlesbrough Football Club

があるので、サッカーファンなら、知っているのかもしれません。
(私は知りませんでしたが）

キャプテン・クック/ James Cook (1728 - 1779) が、ミドルズブラのマートン/ Marton の出身であることから、彼はこの市のヒーローになっています。

'キャプテン・クック誕生の地 博物館 / Captain Cook Birthplace Museum'がマートンにあります。

私達は、現代美術館の"mima": "MiddlesbroughInstitute of Modern Art" が目的で、
ミドルズブラに来ました。

ここが、思ったよりもずっと良くて、来て良かったな〜と思いました。

美術館の周囲は、広々とした芝の広場があり、鳥が住まう池があり、息抜きには適した場所に思えます。


Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough is well known as a large industrial city.

The city has a football club : Middlesbrough Football Club.

If you are a football fan in Japan, you might know the city.

James Cook (1728 - 1779) came from Marton in Middlesbrough, so he is a hero of the city.

There is Captain Cook Birthplace Museum' in Marton.

Our purpose was "mima" :"MiddlesbroughInstitute of Modern Art", so we came to Middlesbrough .

It is quite good, more than I thought and I feel I was pleased I visited there.

In the surroundings are a spacious green and a pond where birds live, I feel a good place for having a breather.

2) '日記のボトル' / 'Bottle of Notes'

'ミマ' / 'mina'と '日記のボトル'  / 'Bottle of Notes'
'mima' は2007 年にオープンされました。
広場のボトルの作品 :  '日記のボトル ' / 'Bottle of Notes' が印象的で、

その場ですぐに目を奪われました。(タイトル翻訳は私です）
'mima' のシンボルになっているようです。

'ボトルマン・シリーズ' / 'BOTTLEMAN SERIES' で作品を発表している、

日本人の友人 'Sさん' を思い出しました。'ボトルマン・シリーズ'→ ★

ミュージアム・ショップでポスト・カードを見つけたので、購入。

ロンドンに戻った時に彼に送りました。

'mima' and 'Bottle of Notes'
'mima' was opened in 2007.
The bottle sculpture : 'Bottle of Notes' in the square is impressive and

 immediately I was fascinated on the spot.

 It seems to be a symbol of 'mima'.

I think of one of my Japanese friends, 'S San' who shows his work as 'BOTTLEMAN SERIES'→ ★

I found a post-card designed with this bottle and bought it.

When I returned to London, I sent it to him.

 '日記のボトル' 

クレス・オルデンバーグ (1929 - )と クージ ・ヴァン ・ブリュッゲン (1942 - 2009)

の共同作品です。
キャプテン・クックとミドルズブラの遺産である工業技術と工学への

賞賛を呈しているそうです。

世界への冒険の象徴と物事 (冒険？) を実現してゆく技術の両方が

盛り込まれている、良いアイディアだと思います。

この美術館がどうありたいか、どのように人々に見せたいか
というのが感じられます。

私は初めてクージ ・ヴァン ・ブリュッゲンを知りました。

彼女は彫刻家であり、美学史家であり、批評家です。

殆どの作品は、ご主人、オルデンバーグ氏との共同作業です。

オルデンバーグ氏の奥さんだったのでね〜...と、

思われるのは彼女にとっては不愉快でしょうか？

'Bottle of Notes'

They say the "Bottle" pays tribute to James Cook and 

the technical and engineering heritage of Middlesbrough. (★)

I think it is good idea that is both symbolic of adventure in the world and 

the techniques for realization.

I feel this what 'mima' would be and represent.

It was first time I knew of Coosje van Bruggen.

She was a a sculptor, art historian, and critic.

Most of her works were collaborations with her husband, Claes Oldenburg.

Indeed, she was Oldenburg's wife, wasn't she?

If we thought she was Oldenburg's wife, would she be uncomfortable?

'mima'の建物の中から 

'瓶の中にメッセージを入れて海に流す'という行為があります。

それは救助を求めたり、人との繋がりを求めたり、

潮の流れを研究することであったり...他にもいろいろな思いで、

人はその行為をするのでしょう。

もしも誰かから、返事がきたら、それはもう、嬉しい驚き！

何か、そこには夢があるように感じます。

今の時代でしたら、それはネットの世界で行われているのかもしれません。

でも、'瓶にメッセージ' のやり方には、ロマンを感じるのに、

ネットの方にはロマンをあまり感じません。

この感覚は私だけでしょうか？

海に期待することとネットに期待することのどちらが夢があるかという

比較でいえば、私としては海に軍配があがるということです。

自分が実際どちらを選択するかは、もちろん、ネットです(笑)。

このボトルの白い文章はキャプテン・クックの航海日誌の文章から

作成されているといいます。

そうだ！自分は何らかの理由で旅はできないけれど、

自分のかわりにボトルを海に流して、冒険をさせる、旅をさせるということも

あるのかもしれません...クック船長の海の冒険のように...

 From the building of 'mima' 

There is an act of floating a message in a bottle out to sea.

The act might mean that ask for help, wish for relationship with people,

research about currents and others.

If we had an answer from someone, it could be a delightful surprise!

Somehow I feel a dream in the act.

Nowadays it might be achieved via the Internet World.

However, even though I feel great ambition about the bottle way,

I do not feel such great ambition about using the Internet way.

Is this sense only me?

 When I think about expectation and compare the sea and the Internet,

 which has more of a dream, my winner is the sea.

In fact, I select for using, of course Internet! (laugh)

I heard the white writing is made up from Captain Cook's journals.

Oh! Yes! For a person who cannot travel for some reason,

though instead of the person, 
a bottle can have adventure or travel as Captain Cook. 

3) 周囲 / Surroundings

ミマの横には池があり、周囲は芝が広がっています。写真左に'Bottle of Notes'。

'オオバンの親子' を初めて見ました。

Coot 'Mother and Child'
It was the first time I had seen 'Coot's mother and child'.

The real duck is like a decoy.

広い芝があって良かったね。/ The wide green is good for you.

'mima' からタウン・ホール を見る 

広場にはタウン・ホール (★) が隣接しています。

ビクトリア朝の劇場とクリプト / Crypt 劇場の２つがあり、

さまざまなイベントが行われています。

建物は、英国の文化財指定建造物 / Listed building の

 'グレード II / Grade II ' に指定されています。

この広場周辺に文化施設が集まっているのですね。

The square is near-by the Town Hall. (★)

They have the Victorian concert hall and, the second concert hall, the Crypt 

and have many types of events.

The building is a Grade lI Listed Building.

The square has a concentration of cultural facilities, doesn't it?

当初の計画では、ミドルズブラへ行く前に、絶景が見えるという

'ローズベリー ・トッピング' / 'Roseberry Topping'

へのウォーキングを考えていました。

けれども、いつものように私達のスローな動きと、予想外のできごと (良かれ悪しかれ) で行くことができませんでした。

行くことができないと知ったのは、前日だったので、'残念感' は少なかったです....

ローズベリー ・トッピング は、ノース・ヨーク・ムーアズ国立公園の北東に位置し、標高が320mあります。

英国ではかなり高い位置にあるので、'絶景' がそこにはあるのは容易に想像できます。

そこは、ナショナル・トラスト(★) が管理していて、ウォーキングコースも整理されているようでした。

キャプテン・クック/ James Cook ( 1728 - 1779) との、下のような逸話もあります。

彼が少年であった頃、彼の家族はローズベリー ・トッピングの近くに住んでいて、彼はローズベリー ・トッピングに登っていました。

頂上からの景色や地平線が、やがて彼の冒険魂を刺激したと言われています。

Middlesbrough,  21st of August, 2015

My first plan we was that we would walk up and around Roseberry Topping before 

Middlesbrough.

However, our slow moving as usual and unexpected events (whatever good or bad) made the plan change and we did not go there.

I knew this the day before so my regret was not big. 

Roseberry Topping is located in the North-east of the North York Moors National Park and altitude is 320m.

The height is quite high for Britain, so I could easily imagine there has superb views.

The Topping is managed by the National Trust (★) and the walking routes seem to be easy

There has a story of James Cook (1728 - 1779) below.

When he was a young boy his family lived near the Topping and he climbed the Topping.

They say that the views and the horizon from the top stimulated his adventurous spirit.

真ん中の 'トンガリ帽' がローズベリー ・トッピング

私は、走らせている車からローズベリー ・トッピングを撮影しました。

次回があるなら、ぜひ、頂上を目指して歩いてみたいですね〜〜。

元気なうちに "次回"を作らなくてはいけません....。

I photographed Roseberry Topping while driving. If I have a next time, I really would walk up there~~!

I must make it while I am fine.

2) リンソープ アパートメント / Linthorpe Apartments

ミドルズブラでは、セルフ・ケータリング・アパートメント：
'リンソープ アパートメント / Linthorpe Apartments' 
に、2泊まりました。

We stayed two nights in a self-catering apartment :Linthorpe Apartments , Middlesbrough.

この建物の幾つかの部屋がセルフ・ケータリングになっていて、
いくつかは通常に人が住んでいるようでした。
私達は正面１階に泊まりました。

It seems as though some are short-term (self-catering) and
some are long-term normal.
We stayed on the ground floor.

古い建物を改修してアパートメントとして、現在の姿になっています。
The old building was refurbished and converted into apartments.

ベッドルーム
綺麗なのですが、何か、落ち着くことができませんでした。
写真、ぼけてます....すみません。
 
Bedroom
It was clean, although somehow I could not be relaxed.
No focus, sorry.

ここもなにか、落ち着かない...
Here, too I did not feel easy...

キッチン
家庭の味が恋しくなってきた頃でした。
B&Bでなく、セルフ・ケータリングして本当に良かったです。
Kitchen 
By this time I was missing my own home-cooking taste.
I really appreciated self-catering rather than B&B.

広いリヴイングルームなのですが、タバコの臭いや他の臭いが
ソファーについていて、私達はソファーを利用することができませんでした。

 However the settee in the wide living-room-kitchen,
 has smoke and other smells, so we could not use the settee.

建物の一角がティールームになっています。
ここで朝食をとることができます。
私達は、お茶にも朝食にも使用しませんでした。

The corner of the building is tearooms.
People can have breakfast.
We did not use here for tea and breakfast, as well.
