1) ウォリック城 / Warwick Castle

A: 今日と昔 / Past and Present

ウォリック城は中世のお城で、遺跡や建物などを守る団体の指定や候補になっています。

そうした歴史的価値が高いお城でありながら、1978年にマダムタッソーの館で有名なタッソーグループに買われて以来、テーマパークとして観光名所になりました。

マダムタッソーグループは2007年に’マーリンエンターテーメント’に吸収されました。

’マーリン’は、エンターテーメント業界で、世界でディズニーに次ぐ
規模の会社で、ロンドンアイも彼らの手によって営業されています。

以前ロンドンアイに行った時に、チケット売り場にジェームスボンドのろう人形が立っていたのは、そういうわだったのね〜と納得しました。

このお城は征服王ウィリアム (フランスのノルマンディ公) によって1068年に作られました。彼は現英国王室の開祖です。

ということはこの王室が持つ歴史の長さとウォリック城の歴史の長さは同じということ。

わ〜、ふたつとも942年！

征服王の後、このお城はウォリック伯に所有され権力の象徴になりました。

その後、囚人、捕虜、王さえも閉じ込める場所として使用されました。

現在、"城の地下牢館" (the Castle Dungeons) が新しいアトラクションになっています。

前日、町なかで 、’地獄のドア’を経験した私はこの手のものは充分でしたから、そこへは行きませんでした。

Past and Present

Warwick Castle is a medieval castle. 

It is protected against unauthorised change as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, in recognition of its status as a nationally important archaeological site or historic building. 

Although it is a historic castle, it has been a leisure facility since (Madame) Tussauds bought the castle in 1978. 

Tussauds was purchased by Merlin Entertainments in 2007.

Merlin Entertainments is the second largest amusement park company, after Walt Disney group, in the world. 

Merlin manages London Eye, when I went to their ticket office, there was a wax figure of James Bond. 

Then I understood why it was there.

In 1068, Warwick Castle was built by William the Conqueror, who is the founder of the current Royal family. 

So the history of the castle and the Royal family are same length. 

Wow! 

They are 942 years old. 

After William, the castle had belong to the Earl of the Warwick, and it served as a symbol of his power. 

Later the castle was used to hold prisoners, prisoners of war, even an English king. 

Today, there is a new attraction, the Castle Dungeon.

I had an experience of 'Hell's Door' in the town and I felt scared enough of the dungeon the previous day, so we did not go in.

2) 虚実の世界 / The World in Truth and Falsehood

A: 虚実 / Truth and Falsehood

展示物を観ていると、どれが本物でどれが偽物なのか、ろう人形と衣装を身に着けた人も初めは見分けがつきません。

虚実の世界が混在し、おもしろい! 
(とはいっても私は、ろう人形は苦手なので写真撮影はしていません)

本当の歴史をもっているハンンプトンコートとディズニーワールドをあわせもった魅力があると思いました。

本物 (歴史的なもの、または歴史) を現実の世界の身近かな距離において、楽しませる英国の余裕を感じました。

お兄さんがわざと失敗してみせると、

真剣に励ます子供達にちょっと感動。

The archer deliberately showed us his failure, then the children say a few words of comfort and eagerly encourage him.

I am quite impressed.

Truth and Falsehood

When I looked at the displays, I could not decide which was truth or falsehood, which were real people wearing medieval clothes, or which were wax works. 

The world of truth and falsehood was fun! 
(Even thought I wrote fun,

I do not go for wax figures, and I could not take photographs.) 

I think the castle has attractive points making it a mixture of Hampton Court which has real history, and Disney world.

I felt the huge scope of Britain which has so many historical things, mostly genuine and here history is presented in entertaining ways.

これを見るとピクニックでは高級食品が披露されたのね
と推測できます。

There is a Fortnum and Mason (F&M) hamper. 
I can guess that they want to show the high quality food, 
eaten when the Royal family had a picnic in 1898.

野外では楽しいアトラクションがまだまだあります。

There are more enjoyable attractions outside.

王様の剣 (エクスカリバー)の小劇

薬やってますか？と問いたくなるマーリンと、
悪い魔女にしか見えないグィンネビアと、
脇役ですぐに死んでしまうでしょうと思うようなアーサー王
 (または彼は彼の役がヒーローだと知らない)と、
劇だからねっと思いっきり悪役ぶるケイ (たぶんケイでしょう) 
が出演者です。

これが、結構、楽しめました。

The short play of The Sword in the Stone : Excalibur

I cannot stop asking this Merlin 'Are you drugged?', 
and this Guinevere looks just like a bad witch, 
and the King Arthur looks as if he were playing a supporting role 
and maybe he would be dead soon, 
(or he did not understand that his role is to be a hero)? 
And the Kay character looks as though 
he thought this is just a play, so ’I will overact’.

I quite enjoyed their play.

トレビュシェット

(平衡錐投石機/ヘイコウスイトウコウキ)

中世に使用された兵器。

これは高さ18m、重さ22トンの機械で、重さ150kgの弾薬を300m、

投げ飛ばすように設計されています。

材料は樫の木とロープです。

ここでは巨大な火の玉を飛ばす
アトラクションを見せてくれました。

しかし、1日に2度 (または3度) ほどしか実演しないのに、

この巨大な武器を作ってしまい、

この広い敷地を維持しているのも、すごい！

と思う日本人の私です。

Trebuchet

The war machine was used in the Middle Ages.

 This machine is designed to be capable of hurling projectiles distances of up to 300m 
and can throw up to 150kg of ammunition at a time.

 It is made oak and ropes.

They demonstrated it by shooting a huge fireball !!!

By the way, they made the big catapult and
keep a large island for it, 
even though they only demonstrate two or three? times in a day.
It is amazing and admirable for me who is Japanese.

私達はエイヴォン川を挟んだ丘に座って見学。

We sat down on the hill across the River Avon from there and enjoyed watching.

写真ではよくわかりませんが、2人の男の人が

それぞれの回転機の中で走って動かします。

ダブルで鼠が回転機の中で廻っているような具合です。

走っている人にちょっと気の毒。
でも次が楽しみな私！

You cannot see enough in my photograph, 

although two men run in the wheels of the machine 
like mice in a running wheel. 

I thought, poor guys, however,
 I looked forward to what would happen next.

The fireball is flying in the sky.

It landed on the grass.

この投石機が実際に使用されていた時代には弾薬の他に、伝染病を
ひろめるために死んだ動物、死体なども使用されたそうです……。

中世の生物兵器なのです……。

このお城にいると、時間、気分がいろいろと交錯してしまいます。

ここがディズニーワールドとは違うのかもしれません……。

When people used it as a real weapon, they threw did not only ammunition but also carcasses and corpses trying to infect the defenders…….

 It was medieval biological warfare……. 

While I was in the castle, I felt the interplay of time and feelings or thoughts. 

Maybe it is different from Disney world.

3) バードショー / Bird Show

フクロウ、禿鷹、白頭鷲 (ハクトウワシ) のショー。

The show had flights of owl, vulture and bald eagle.

白頭鷲が城の周囲を飛ぶのはかっこいい！

It was so cool, the bald eagle was flying around the castle.

エイヴォン川からのお城

持ち主が誰であろと、この景色は暴力的な攻撃を受けない限り、

いつの時代も殆ど変わりはしないのでしょう。

1) 西ゲートの前に / Before the Westgate

私達はパークコテージから西のゲートを通って町の中心地に入ります。そのゲートに着くまでに、たくさんのチュダー時代の建物が現存しています。町の中心地は1694年の大火災でたくさんの藁葺きや木造建築物を失いました。けれども、ゲートを出たところにはそれらがまだ残っています。

We walked from Park Cottage into the centre of Warwick through 'The Westgate'. Before the gate, there are many Tudor buildings. The town had 'the Great Fire of 1694', when many thatched timber buildings were destroyed . However, there are still many timber period buildings outside the gate.

ここはウォリックの観光としては外せない建築物で、私達にとっては、この日初めての観光サイトでした。にもかかわらず、私達はこの中にあるカフェに入っただけでした。コノナマケモノ！

Don't miss here! It is a very famous tourist spot. However, we only went to the cafe in this building, although it was the first tourist site for us in the town. Oh! Dear!

お茶と言いつつ、Rはカフェオレ、私はカフェラテをいただきました。

Before the cafe, we said that we should have tea anyway, even though R had cafe au lait and I had cafe latte.

3) トーマス オーケンズ ハウス / Thomas Oken's House

15世紀後半にトーマスオーケンによって建築されました。パークコテージよりはちょっぴりお若いのです。

トーマスオーケンは高級品を扱う呉服商で、自治体のいくつかの建物も新築していました。彼には跡継ぎがいなかったので、彼の財産管理人によって遺産は恵まれない人々や教育機関などに寄付されました。彼はウォリックの恩人で、人々の✵誇り✵になっています。

現在、この家はティルームです。

お伽噺に出てくるようなかわいい家ですね。

オーケンハウスの後ろから / From the back of the house

The house was built was by Thomas Oken in the late 15th century. It is a little bit younger than Park Cottage. Thomas Oken was a mercer and donated some properties to the Corporation of Warwick.

He did not have children, so he gifted money and properties for the benefit of poor people and education. He is still ✵honoured✵ in Warwick.

Today, it is a tea room.

It is so lovely and looks like a fairy tale house, doesn't it?

1676年に設置された、以前の女性用刑務所は1694年の大火災にあいました。地下牢は非常に湿り気が多いため火事を免れました。重罪人は夜はチェーンで繋がれ地下牢に入れられていたそうです。火事のときはどうしたのでしょうか？？？

1799年には再建築され1860年まで刑務所として使用されました。1932年からは州会議所になっています。第１中庭にある地下牢の換気窓だったところから、今でも1676年当時の地下牢が見えるそうです。

私達はその建物の中に入らず、建物沿いのバラックストリートを通っただけでした。ですが、その通りに古いドア (写真 上) がはめ込まれていました。説明板にそれが刑務所で使用されていたものだとあり、びっくり！ここでは想像を巡らしたくはなかったのですが、どうしてもいろいろ思え、見えてしまいます〜 〜 〜 ！ もうそこでは地獄にいる気分!

Hell's Door

The former county goal for women was established in 1676. It was damaged by the Great fire, although the underground dungeon survived, because there was very damp. They say that felons were chained in the dungeon at night. I wonder how they were during the fire.

It was rebuilt in 1779, and was the goal until 1860. In 1932, there became County Council offices. The underground dungeon from 1676 and the ventilator top can still be seen in the first courtyard.

We did not go there, we just passed alongside the building in Barrack Street. However, we found the door (above photograph), which was a prison cell door. I was so surprised. I would not use my imagination here, although I could not help it,〜〜〜! I had a feeling of hell there. could地地獄か地地獄から天国ヘ / Hell to Heaven

地獄のドアから５歩ほどの角を曲がると、教会が見えます。セントマリーズチャーチです。地獄のドアがあったバラックストリートの角を曲がると教会へ続く道になっていて、まるで天国へむかうような気持ちになりました。

この教会は大火にあいながらも観光スポットになっています。ここもまた私達は眺めただけ。次回は中を見ましょう。昔の郵便局 / The Old Post Office

教会へ続く道にかわいらしい昔の郵便局があります。この周辺も大火災にあり、再建築されていますが、ヴィクトリア時代 (1840~1900) のものなので少なくとも110年以上の建築物。

現在は空っぽ状態であるにもかかわらず、明るい雰囲気を維持しているのは、外壁の装飾がほほえましいからな〜〜？

To Heaven

It takes three steps from the hell door to a corner. Then you can see St. Mary's Church.

It is a tourist spot, even though it was damaged in the fire. We just looked at the outside, next time we will go in. There is the old Post Office before the church. Around here had the fire too, although the building was built in the Victorian period (1840~1900), so it is at least 110 years old. Today it is empty, even though it keeps a bright atmosphere, the reason might be its lovely decoration...?....I think. 郵

ここはコーヒーハウスも兼ねていたようです。

Next door to the old Post Office is lovely. It was used to be a Tavern. It seemed to be a Coffee House too.

5) 'ティンカタンク'って何？ / What is 'Tink-a-Tank'?

A: 気にかかる小道

今日、この小道の前は一度通り過ぎていました。何か気にかかる小道でした。なので、そのときに写真のみ撮りました。あとになって、"町巡りの地図" (WARWICK TOWN TRAIL) に 'ティンカタンク' (Tink-a-Tank) という面白そうな名前を見つけ、それがこの小道の向こうにあるのがわかりました。

We passed here once today, somehow it was on my mind. Later we found Tink-a-Tank on the Town Trail : the town walking map, and it is further along the path. 'Tink-a-Tank' sounds interesting, doesn't it?St. Mary's ChurcSt. Mary's Church from the path

その小道に入り、セントマリー教会を振り返りながら撮影。この道はお墓沿いにあります。けれども明るさがありました。でも夜は歩きたくないですね。

We went down this path. I looked back to the church, then I took this photograph of it. The path is alongside the church yard. In the day it is quite bright. However, I wouldn't walk here at night.

待ち巡りの地図には参考ルートが載っています。そのルート上にはメタル製のプレート (写真: 下) が道路にはめこまれ、順路を示していま示していまMetal Plaqueque

ます。

私達はこの地図を持ちながら待ち巡りをしていましたが、順路は無視していました。ヨークシャーデールの中を歩く時は基本ルートに忠実でした。ヨークシャーデールでは方向を間違ってしまうと、ひ弱な私達は大変なことになってしまうからです。ですが、ここではちょっと間違っても町の中、たいしたことはないでしょう？ と臨機応変に行動していました。The path ia-Tankティンカタンクと呼ばれる小道

'ティンカタンク'まで来てようやくプレートの存在に気がつきました。観光順路をしめす番号が地図と、はめ込みプレートは一致しています。この計画性に驚きました。おそらく町の景観を保つために道路にはめ込み、かつそのプレートは歴史ある町の風情を上げるものなっていると思いました。

Metal Plaques

'The Town Trail' shows us a sample walk which is marked by metal plaques (See photograph) let into the pavement. While we were walking, we had 'The Town Trail', although we sometimes ignored their sequence. In the Yorkshire Dales, we followed their routes faithfully, because if we got lost in there, it could be a serious problem for us who are so weak. However, here in the town, I thought even if we made a mistake about direction, we could still be in the town and it would not matter, then I could do whatever the situation calls for. So finally when we found 'Tink-a-Tank' , we saw our first metal plaque. Each number on the map matches the number on the plaque. I was impressed by their system and I think the system protected the views in the town as well as the plaques make for a more historical atmosphere.

C: 品の良い老婦人 / An Elegant Lady

そのプレートの近くに石のドアのような何か (下の写真) が道にはめこまれていました。

これは何?と不思議がっていると品の良いご婦人が偶然通りかかり教えてくださいしました。彼女は私達と反対側 (ザ バッツ通り / The Butts) からやって来ました。

❖ここは底の固い靴で歩くと音が響き、その音からティンカタンクと名付けられています。そして、それはこの高い壁のせいだけでなく、小道の下はトンネルになっているので余計響くのです。石のドアは、今ははめこまれてしまって使用できませんが、以前は開けることができ、そのトンネルにおりて行けるようになっていました。戦時中はこの中に武器がしまわれていたのです。武器が必要な時にはそのドアを使用したのです❖

まだお話が続きそうだったのですが雨が降って来てしまい、お別れしました。

歴史のある町というのは、不思議なことがたくさん隠れているのだな〜と思います。それにしてもこのトンネルはどこからきてどこにつながっているのでしょう？もともとは何のために作られたのでしょう？

あのご婦人はご存知だったのでしょうか？

An Elegant Lady

The plaque is close to what looks like a stone door (above photograph) in the path. I wonder "What is it? " "Is it a door?" " Was it a door?"

By chance, an elegant lady was coming from the Butts (a road), then she explained about there,

❖If people walk with hard shoes, it makes echoes. It became the name 'Tink-a-Tank'. The reason is not the high walls but also here is a tunnel. A tunnel runs below the path. That door was opened and you went down into the tunnel. When we had the war, weapons were in the tunnel and when people needed them, people used the door.❖

She looked as if she would tell us more about there, although it started raining, so we must say Good-bye.

I think historical towns have a few hidden mysteries. I still wonder where the tunnel starts and ends, and why did they build it.
