❷Central London(17th.Jun.2010)-Nordic Bakery

2) Central London-Nordic Bakery
A: 場所 / The Place

The Place

We went from Sir John Soane's Museum to near Piccadilly Circus.

There is 'Nordic Bakery', for me, it is more of a cafe than a bakery.

The cafe is in front of a park.

It is very close to busy roads, although it is quite quiet and peaceful.

In the screen of my digital camera I found that there was a gold elephant statue in the park, while I was taking a photograph of the cafe.

I guessed that the elephant was similar to Bath's Pig series and Edinburgh's Cow series.

So I thought I might see other elephants in Central London, actually
I did.

(Cinnamon buns)

Nordic Bakery

I felt the cafe's style comes from North Europe.

The name seemed to show North Europe.

I heard from a waitress that Finns make bread in the bakery downstairs, and that the cheese, ham and some ingredients come from Finland.

None of the waitresses came from Finland.

I think that the cafe's inside is simple and efficient, as though they did not spend a lot of money, although they have made a North European atmosphere as much as they can.

The overall feel is of a cool atmosphere, so there is a thick rug hanging on the wall, I think the idea is good, however, I do not like the rug.

One of their features is cinnamon buns, though I did not eat one in the cafe, however, R bought one, then I could eat it in our home.

Usually I do not fancy sweet things so much, although I enjoyed the cinnamon bun.

It is not so sweet a taste, and cinnamon works strongly.

In Japan, recently I feel that foods are well balanced, healthy, and are beautifully made.

We can enjoy the fine tastes and subtle differences.

On the other hand I feel the tastes do not have individuality.

So I felt a freshness about the cinnamon bun which has strong character and the taste was nice.

However, I wonder if the cinnamon bun would be accepted in Japan which has so many delicious foodstuffs, for example, now the Michelin Guide gives many stars in Tokyo.

At least, I felt it is one of my favourite sweet breads in Britain.

❶Central London(17th.Jun.2010) - Sir John Soane's Museum

1) Central London-Sir John Soane's Museum

Hogarth

I had wanted to go Sir John Soane's Museum since my friend, K , gave me a book: "Museums in London-From Royal Collection to Contemporary Arts"in Japanese (Takeshi Sakurai / Heibonsha 2008).

Because I found from the book that the original of "A Rake's Progress" by Hogarth (1697~1764) is in the Museum and I was interested in Hogarth and a phrase, "a Small Labyrinthine Museum" in the book.

When I visited Tate Britain 2007, there was a Hogarth Exhibition, and then I knew Hogarth.

My first impression was that he was a pioneer illustrator, and his works were highly skilled caticatures.

His work reminds me of Bruegel (the Elder) and Bosch.

Although his works are more humorous and brighter than them, I like Bruegel and Bosch more than Hogarth, however, if I can put Hogarth's picture or theirs in my house, I might choose Hogarth's work.

Hogarth was well known as a painter, printmaker, and caricaturist. Particularly famous is his series, "A Rake's Progress".

He campaigned for copyright protection of Artists' works, and persuaded Parliament to pass the Engravers' Copyright Act in 1735.

Later I researched and I felt he was an ideas person!

         Sir John Soane's Museum

Sir John Soane's Museum

I visited the Museum at last.

The Museum has a limit to the number of visitors, so sometimes there is a queue.

We were lucky, we went in right away.

The Museum let us leave a bag at reception or put into a clear plastic bag, while we look around there, because most things in the museum are not covered so this helps protect them.

The government manages the museum, so it is free, although a pamphlet is 2 pounds.

The pamphlet says that Sir John Soane was an architect who died in 1837, the year of Queen Victoria's accession to the throne, and the government was given his collection on certain conditions when he died.

Moreover it describes Soane's career as as architect, and some features of the museum, for example, the effect of setting some mirrors to make spaces appear larger than they are.

Actually I visited and I understood that it is a small British Museum, it is like a maze, and the architecture uses natural light.

What a dense collection of things in a small space! It was a little regrettable that some rooms closed with ropes.

We lectured each other, I showed my hastily acquired knowledge from the Japanese book about some pictures to R in the picture room, and R talked about Soane's collection and the architecture from the pamphlet.

Girls

There were some groups of school girls who were in serious lectures.

They stood up, moved and sat down while they listened to their teachers and had question and answer conversations.

They kept good manners, they looked well-trained.

Their uniforms were a blue and green checked dress, and a pair of white socks and black shoes.

I haven't seen such lovely uniforms like these checked dresses in Japan.

For me, who is Japanese, it seemed as if they came out of a European picture book.

They reminded me of "Madeline" (by Ludwing Bemelmans / Viking Press 1939).

The uniform of Madeline is plain, and the country (the location of the book is France), their environment, and personalities are different from these school girls, although I felt both of them are equally lovely.

I met the groups several times in the museum, because the museum is so small.

Every time I saw them I felt pleasant.

Park

In front of the museum is a park.

I think the British really love the Sun, so they, from adults to children, look joyful in their park.

In Japan, a park often is a slide, a swing, a sandpit and so on, we called them "Chibikko Kouen ": Childrens' Park. Parks in Britain are quite simple, just trees, flowers, a lawn, and benches, and also usually there are only a few crows and pigeons, so people can enjoy the Sun and quiet.

Blue eggs and blue cider

I have never seen blue eggs in Japan. Maybe even here, it is not usual. The Old Cotswold Legbar chickens are free range. Each egg has a blue stamp, which reminds me of the decoration of Easter Eggs. Even though the shell is blue, the yolk is yellow, and the white of the eggs is as usual. I think the taste is good.

The blue pear cider contrasts with the blue eggs, the taste is strange, its taste is artificial. The label says 'BLUEBERRY', I do not think the colour comes from blueberries.
In Japan, usually cider is non-alcoholic and tastes sweet. In Britain, cider is alcoholic and usually fizzy. Its ingredients are few, for example, usually apple, sometimes pear, occasionally chestnut and others. Usually its taste is slightly sweet.

Blue cider goes well with my drawing using coloured ink. (I drew this while I listened to 'La Campanella' in Japan.)

Usually the pear cider (St. Helier), we drink is pleasant, so it works well as an aperitif. Two of my Japanese friends who love alcohol, and other friends who do not drink it so much, all liked it when they came to Britain. Blue cider is made by St. Helier, but we will not buy it again.

We drank an ale, which was very different, to recover from the blue cider.
The label of Bath Ale is a hare, I do not know why they use it.
I think I must be in Britain, when I have an "ale", it is quite normal.

The garden has become a jungle, while I was away.
When I was here, I had cut them very short. I would cut again before I return to Japan.

I am in Britain, it is the fantastic season of roses.
My boyfriend R said that this year is the best year for roses in his memory.
He came to Britain (for him, return) earlier than me, so he came to Hearthrow Airport to meet me with a bouquet .
Well ……it is just like a British or a Westerner! Japanese guys might be shy, so they cannot be like this. Even me ;
I felt embarrassed with the bouquet. (Blush!)

I borrowed a book "London Ateliers" from Kamakura Library.

In the cover, a girl stands on tiptoe.

The tiptoe is lovely and good, it reminds me of one of Norman Rockwell's illustrations in which a girl stands on tiptoe beside a piano.

I am more interested in the design rather than the contents,
I do not mean the book is boring.
I just say, the design is so lovely.

Princess Toyotomi

Princess Toyotomi

When I reserved a book, "Princess Toyotomi" by Manabu Makime,
in Kamakura library, my turn was sixty-eight for the book.

My turn has come at last.

When I was still in Britain, the first book of his which I read was "Kamogawa Horumo".

My friend sent it to me. She always sends or recommends books which are my favourite types. I enjoyed this one too.

After I came back to Japan, I read his books "Horumo Rokkei",
"Shika Otoko Awoniyoshi","Za Manpokei" in sequence.

The author is popular, for example, "Shika Otoko Awoniyoshi" became a TV drama, "Kamogawa Horumo" became a film.

I haven't watched them yet.

"Princess Toyotomi" is the latest book, published by Bungeishunju in 2009, illustration by Maya Ishi, design by Satoshi Iwase.

The book is fun! I think the idea is similar to "The da Vinci Code", although I want to think it is a coincidence.

I enjoyed Mr,Mikime's leaps of imagination as usual and am impressed by his research and I feel comfortable with his well balanced style of writing.

I have a hunch that his next story will be about the three who are in the cover (above photo), although I hope his next work will not be anything to do with them.

Anyway, I was pleased that I was able to read it before going to Britain.
