葉祥明美術館 / Yoh Shoumei Art Museum
葉祥明美術館 (ヨウショウメイビジュツカン)が北鎌倉にあることは10年以上前から知っていましたが、今まで一度も訪れたことがありませんでした。

美術館と言っても、箱型の建物でなく、洋館です。
もともとあった洋館を利用したのではなく、当初から美術館として建てられました。

あじさい寺と呼ばれる明月院への道筋にあるので、今までに立ち寄る機会は複数回ありました。
私には、葉祥明の絵柄が世界が、北鎌倉のイメージから離れているので、北鎌倉へ行った際に、この美術館へ行く気持ちがおきませんでした。
ですが、一度は行ってみたいとも思っていて、ようやく、この日、実現しました。
葉 祥明 (ヨウ ショウメイ / 1946 -)氏の作品には、私が高校生の時に『詩とメルヘン』(1973 -2003 / サンリオ )という月刊誌上で、出会い、かなりファンになりました。
(ちなみに『詩とメルヘン』は、アンパンマンで有名な、やなせたかし (1919 -2013) 氏が編集長をしていました。私は高校時代、この雑誌の購読者でした。）
その後、自分が美術大学へ行くと、その熱はさめ、もう何年も葉 祥明 氏の作品を見ることはありませんでした。
私達が美術館へ行った時は、ちょうどピアノかヴァイオリンのコンサートが終了した直後でした。

Even though it is an art museum, it is a Western-style house, not a box-shaped building.
It was not that they used the original Western-style building, the house was built as an art museum from the beginning.

As it is on the way to Meigetsu-in Temple, which is often called Hydrangea Temple, so a few time I have had the chance of popping into the Museum.
I had not felt like going into this museum when I had visited Kita-Kamakura, because for me, the pictures or world of Yoh Shoumei are separate from my image of Kita-Kamakura.
However, I thought that I would like to go once, and finally, I made it today.
I first came across his picture in a monthly magazine,『Poem and Märchen / Shi to Meruhen in Japanese』(1973 - 2003 / Sanrio) when I was a high school student and became quite a fan of his work.
(By the way, the Magazine's chief editor was Takashi Yanase (1919 - 2013) who was best known as the creator of the picture book and anime series Anpanman.
When I was in the high school, I was one of the subscribers of this Magazine.)
After I went to an art university in Japan, my enthusiasm cooled down and I hadn't seen Yoh Shoumei's pictures for a long time.
When we went into the Museum, it was just after a concert of piano or violin had finished.
I do not know if that was the reason, but there were many visitors at the museum.
In the shop, I was surprised that there were many picture books, far more than I would have thought.
It is also surprising that Yoh Shoumei has been publishing picture books for 40 years.
According to their website (★) about him,
"Yoh Shomei (birth name: Hayama Shomei), picture book author, painter, and poet, born in 1946 in the city of Kumamoto.
His first picture book is White Bird on My Bench (Jake in English translation).
In 1990 receives the Graphic Prize at the Bologna International Children’s Book Fair for his picture book The Wind of the Panther."
Y wanted a calendar, although she did not find anything she liked in the Calendar Exhibition.
However, she did buy Yoh Shoumei's calendar in this museum, Yoh Shoumei seems to suit her taste.
