散歩道は、地図左端のワンドル川の左岸に沿ってあります。

橋は案内板の地図に描かれていないので、比較的新しいようです。
River Wandle The River Wandle flowing north towards Wandsworth drove watermills and provided water for a number of industrial processes in Merton.
Later, it flows to the River Thames.
The bridge is relatively new
because it is not drawn on the map of the information board.  |

| あっ！ロビン(コマドリ)がいる！ Ah! There is a Robin! |
ロビン(コマドリ)は英国の国鳥で、マグカップやカードにも描かれています。
私が英国留学中に、初めて車で出かけたファーナムで、身近に見た鳥もロビンでした。
この鳥が英国の様々なところにいて、人の近くまで寄ってくるのを感じます。
特に庭にやって来るロビンは、箒やスコップを持っっているこちらが心配になるくらい近くまできます。
よく見かけるロビンですが、初めて、羽干しを見ました。
 日向ぼっこ？ 地面に降りて、羽干しをはじめました。 まずは片羽を出します。 "Sunbathing" or "Wing-drying?

Robin is a British National Bird and is also drawn on mugs and cards.
While
I was studying in Britain, I visited Farnham for the first time,
and the bird
I saw close to me was a Robin.

feel that this bird is in various places in Britain and comes close
to people.
In
particular, Robin which comes to a garden can be close enough to
worry about using a broom or spade.
I
often see Robins, but it was the first time I saw the wing-drying.
次は両羽
人間 (私) の前で無防備な姿勢を取れるので、 人々から愛されていることを感じます。 地面と枯葉の中で、上手にカモフラージュはされていますけれどね。
Next is Both Wings
so I can feel the bird is loved by people.
However, the camouflage is very good on the ground with dead leaves.

最近知ったのですが、アメリカでは、赤やオレンジの胸を持つツグミも、時にはムクドリさえも、ロビンと呼ぶようです。
大陸のヨーロッパのロビンは警戒心が強いと聞いています。
Recently I found out that in America, thrushes with red and orange breasts are also called Robin (American Robin).
I heard that Robins in continental Europe are very cautious.
姿勢を変えて陽の当たり具合を変えています。
私が床暖房の上ですることと似ていて、ちょっと可笑しくなりました。 It changes its position and how it faces the sun.
It is similar to what I do lying on underfloor heating, and I felt a bit funny.
人をあまり恐れはしないけれども、目はずっとこちらを伺っているのを感じます。
そうでなければ、生き残れないですよね。 He is not so afraid of people, but I feel that his eyes are always checking me.
Otherwise, he cannot survive, can he?

A. 修道院の壁 / Priory Precinct Wall

| 2. Priory Precinct Wall ; 修道院の壁 (with modern arch) 散歩道側から道路を渡ると、遺跡の壁はあります。 The wall is on the other side of the road from the promenade side. 
ほんの少し残されています。
機能性にかけ道幅も狭くなるにも関わらず、全部を崩してしまわず、
古いものを残そうとする姿勢が素晴らしいです。
Only
a little remains.

the
attitude to leave old things is wonderful.

B. 参事会堂の遺跡 / The remains of Chapter House

| 1. The remains of Merton Priory Chapter House (マートン修道院・参事会堂の遺跡)  1986年から1988年にセインズベリーズ・スーパーマーケット がこの地に建てられる時に修道院の基礎が発掘されました。 ここのセインズベリーズは、英国のチェーン店のスーパーマーケットで 各地にコンビニサイズから大規模店が展開されています。 ここのスーパーマーケット大規模な店です。 写真は、修道院の北側の壁です。  |
PrioryとAbbey、どちらも修道院の意味ですが、Prioryが小修道院、Abbeyが比較的大きな修道院であると私は理解しています。

イギリスへキリスト布教の為に派遣され、
カンタベリー大聖堂の最初の大司教になりました。

an Augustinian (Augustine of Canterbury / ? - 604) Abbey built in the early 12th century. (Augustinian Canons)
Augustine
was a Benedictine monk
who was dispatched to Britain in 596
with
about 40 monks to spread Christianity
and
became the first bishop of Canterbury
Cathedral.

歴史的な地区や、建物を保存しつつ、現代の営みをそこでしていています。
この方法がある程度、成功しているように感じました。
While
preserving the historic area and the buildings, they are working in a
modern way.
I
felt that this approach was partially successful.
