Frank Bowling Exhibition

"THE EY EXHIBITION VAN GOGH AND BRITAIN" :
Vincent van Gog...

Frank Bowling Exhibition :

Hereford Cathedral

Frank Bowling Exhibition
Tate Britain is the home of British art from the 16th century to the present.

Turner Collection is the most famous there?

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775 - 1851) was a British Romanticism painter.

My purpose of visiting Tate Britain on this day was
"THE EY EXHIBITION VAN GOGH AND BRITAIN" :

After Van Gogh Exhibition, I enjoyed other exhibitions at will.

I was reconfirmed of traditional techniques and beauty, and I was pleasantly surprised by new ideas.

Except for the popular exhibitions, the crowds are dispersed and I can enjoy looking at the displays of works quietly.

My favourite museum is Tate Modern, though, Tate Britain is more calm from the aspect of appreciation, so I like more here from this aspect.

While I was looking around, I came across "Frank Bowling Exhibition : "
 (31st of May, 2019 - 29th of August 2019)

This was the first time I knew of  Frank Bowling (1934 - ) .
(His birth year was 1936 on Tate's website, although it was 1934 in Tate's book, exhibition leaflet and Wiki, so I chose 1934.)

This was a retrospective of Bowling's entire career spanning 60 years.

It was perfect for anyone who first met his works like me.

His work is my favourite type.

The most memorable work group was the world map works.

I think I saw an abstract world map for the first time.

The cover of the leaflet, and his art book, are also an abstract map : "Barticaborn", 1967.
(Bartica is a city name in his home country, Guyana)

I always like maps and in July, I saw the Hereford Mappa Mundi in Hereford Cathedral : .

I like the abstract expression and the use of colour by Bowling.

My favourite things are concentrated in his map painting group.

I bought his art book  :
"Frank Bowling" [2019 / Tate Publisher / Edited :  Elena Crippa (? -?)]
in the museum shop.

The Exhibition was curated by the editor, Elena Crippa who is Curator of Modern and Contemporary British Art in Tate.

Frank Bowling

Derek Boshier (1937 ~ )

Mark Rothko (1903 - 1970),

Frank Bowling
I summarized about Bowling with reference to Tate's website and Wiki, and the purchased book "Frank Bowling" (above).

Frank Bowling was born in the Republic of Guyana in 1934, moved to London at the age of 19.

After National Service in the Royal Air Force, he studied paints with
David Hockney (1937 ~)
Derek Boshier (1937 ~ )
Ronald Brooks Kitaj (1932 - 2007)
in the Royal College of Art : RCA.

Before the RCA, Bowling was impressed by British painters like
John Constable (1776 - 1837), Turnerand Thomas Gainsborough (1727 - 1788).

The works of these painters are Figurative art.

I was surprised that Bowling found Thomas Gainsborough to be an inspiring painter.

In 1961, during his RCA student days, he visited New York for the first time, went to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) every day, and looked at paintings by the first-generation Abstract Expressionist painters ;
Jackson Pollock (1912 -1956),
William de Kooning (1904 -1997)
Clyfford Still (1904 -1980)
Barnett Newman (1905 - 1970)
Mark Rothko (1903 – 1970).

From then on, his work has changed dramatically, moving on to abstract paintings.

In 1967 Bowling was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Bowling was elected as a Royal Academician in 2005, the first black artist to be awarded the accolade.
(The Royal Academy of Arts had a maximum of 80 Academicians)

In 2008, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to art and became a senior Royal Academician in 2011.

For 60 years after graduation, Bowling has been back and forth between studios in London and New York.

His paintings relate to Abstract expressionismColour Field painting and Lyrical Abstraction.
(I don't understand this explanation enough.<Wry Smile>)

Bowling's paintings have been exhibited at numerous venues in Europe, Britain and the United States, and are collected by major individuals and businesses around the world.

Now 85 he still paints every day, experimenting with new materials and techniques.

Mappa Mundi

Mappa Mundi
The Bowling retrospective, "Mappa Mundi" showed works from between 1967 and 1989, was held in

This retrospective was organized and managed by Okwui Enwezor (1963 - 2019).
(Okwui Enwezor was a very famous curator.)

I wrote that I saw Hereford Mappa Mundi earlier.

Hereford Mappa Mundi is the largest surviving Mappa Mundi.

Mappa Mundi is a world map created in medieval Europe, and the term comes from Medieval Latin, 'mappa' (cloth or chart) and 'mundi' (of the world).

I was pleasantly surprised that 'Mappa Mundi' was used as the title of a Bowling retrospective.

I can't deepen my thoughts about it and find the right words, so I can't really explain it, however, certain parts of Bowling's world of work certainly have something I really like.

"Who's Afraid of Barney Newman", 1968 :
Barney Newman (1905 -1970) was an American artist,
who is seen as one of the major figures in abstract expressionism
and one of the foremost of the colour field painters.
Bowling seems to be in conflict with him.

4) Room 3
A. 冊子 / Leaflet

According to 'Room 3' in the Leaflet,
above,
"The works in this room, referred to as the 'map paintings', date from 1967 - 71.
Fields of colour are overlaid with stencilled maps of the world and silkscreened images.
- - - - -
The southern hemisphere often dominates these canvases.
This focus marks Bowling's rejection of the western-centric cartography of many world maps.
Images of the artist's mother and children are among those silkscreened onto some of the canvases .
The results are complex, layered artworks.
These 'map painting s' reveal Bowling's interest in the way identities are shaped by geo-politics and displacement."

Self-portrait
In 1967 Bowling started creating works which are called 'map paintings', shortly after moving from London to NY.

Bowling tried to express his identity in his work.

I think young Bowling looked for himself and his art at that time.

At the Van Gogh exhibition, I felt that young Van Gogh was looking for himself in Britain.

Both young artists were looking for themselves, leaving home and journeying in different countries.

It may be common for young people, but it's impressive that the two artists have similar thoughts, with trial and error.

I like maps because there is a unique world there, and I like to imagine that world while looking at the map.

And also fantasy worlds can be represented by maps.

When Bowling tried to create his own world and art, he selected a map of the real world as a motif, and derived "his map : map painting" from there.

In his case, I presume that "map painting" was not only an abstracted map, but also an abstracted self-portrait with an objective view of himself.

Speaking of which, Van Gogh also painted many self-portraits.

In his case, he may have been unable to hire a model because of poverty, and he may have had to become a model himself, however, I think he still had a lot of time to look at himself.

Looking back on yourself when creating new things may be the starting point.
