1)『十二国記』シリーズ
"The Twelve Kingdoms" Series
A. ゼロ / Zero
10年以上前に、友人Kからもらった本『魔性の子』(下の画像)、
『魔性の子』が出版された時には、『十二国記』シリーズの1つとしてではなく、独立したホラー小説でした。
現在では、シリーズの 'ゼロ' として扱われています。
他の『十二国記』シリーズが、十二国の世界が中心 (舞台) で、蓬莱 (日本) は異世界として書かれているのに対し、『魔性の子』では蓬莱 (日本) の世界が中心 (舞台)で、十二国の世界が異世界として書かれています。
現実世界と異世界のファンタジー小説は、通常、現実世界が元にあり、異世界へ行き、戻ってくる形式ですが、『十二国記』シリーズはこの逆の形式になります。
その点も面白いところで、私が好きな点です。
泰麒 (タイキ) です。
十二国では各王国の麒麟が、天命を受け、その国の王を選びます。
この世界では人は特別な木 : 里木 (リボク) になる実 (卵果 /ランカ) から生まれ、麒麟は、麒麟の卵果だけがなる木 : 捨身木 (シャボク) から生まれます。
泰麒 (要)は、本来なら十二国の世界に生まれるはずが、蝕 (ショク; 嵐のようなもの) によって、彼の実は、蓬莱 (ホウライ/ 日本) の世界に流され、女性の子宮に宿り生まれます。
'要 : 泰麒' が10歳の時に、十二国に戻りますが、1年後に自分でおこした蝕 : 鳴蝕 (メイショク) により、再び、日本へ流されます。
『魔性の子』では、要は16歳であり、10歳の時に神隠しにあった少年として物語は展開します。
『十二国記』シリーズは本編として、2001年に『黄昏の岸 暁の天』
が出ましたが、その後は、作者の体調、その他の事情によって、長らく止まっていました。
18年後の2019年に
『白銀の墟 玄の月』(シロガネノオカ クロノツキ / 1~4巻)
が出版され、話題を呼びました。
私を含めた多くの読者が待ち望んでいた物語でした。
私は2020年3月に4冊同時に買いましたが、今年の2月にようやく読みました。
この本も私の読んでいない本の山に組み込まれてしまっていました。
『白銀の墟 玄の月』では、行方不明になっていた泰麒が十二国の世界に戻り、戴極国に還ってからの物語です。

More than 10 years ago, I started reading the books :
"The Demonic Child" and "Shadow of the Moon, Sea of Shadow"
When "The Demonic Child", above was published, it was an independent horror novel, not as part of the "The Twelve Kingdoms" series.
It is now treated as the 'Zero' of the series.
In the other books of "The Twelve Kingdoms" series, the world of the 'Twelve Kingdoms' is the centre, and Horai (Japan) : ★ is written as a different world, while in "The Demonic Child", the world of Horai (Japan) is the centre, so the world of the Twelve Kingdoms is written as a different world.
Real-world and different-world fantasy novels are usually based on a real world, go to a different world, and come back, but the Twelve Kingdoms series is the opposite.
That's also an interesting point, and I like it.
The main character of "The Demonic Child", Kaname Takasato, is a Kirin : ★ and Taiki : ★ of Taikyokukoku Country : Tai which is one of the Twelve Kingdoms.
In this world, human beings are born from a fruit (egg) : Ranka which grows from a special tree : Riboku.
A Kirin is born from a Kirin Ranka of the only Kirin tree : Shaboku.
Originally Kaname : Taiki should have been born in the world of the Twelve Kingdoms, although his Ranka was swept into the world of Horai (Japan) by Shoku (like a storm) and his Ranka reached the womb of a woman and he was born in Horai (Japan).
When 'Taiki : Kaname' was 10 years old, he returned to the Twelve Kingdoms, but a year later he was sent back to Japan due to his own Shoku : Mei-shoku.
In "The Demonic Child", he is 16 years old, and the story unfolds as a boy who had been spirited away when he was 10 years old.
The main story of "The Twelve Kingdoms" series had been stopped for a long time due to the author's physical condition and other circumstances after the publication of "Skies of Dawn" in 2001.
18 years later, in 2019, "Silver Ruins, Black Moon" (Volumes 1 to 4) were published and attracted a lot of attention.
The story had been waited for by many readers, including myself.
Though I bought the 4 books at the same time in March 2020, finally
I read them in February this year.
These books was also incorporated into my "Mountain of Unread Books".
In "Silver Ruins, Black Moon", the missing Taiki returns to the world of the Twelve Kingdoms and returns to his Taikyokukoku Country : Tai.
The publisher of the books in the "The Twelve Kingdoms" series has changed from Kodansha to Shinchosha.
In 2020, she won the 5th Eiji Yoshikawa Bunko Award for the "The Twelve Kingdoms" series.

私が読み始めた時にはすでに『図南の翼』まで刊行されていたので、一気に、
『月の影 影の海』(1992)
『風の海 迷宮の岸』(1993)
『東の海神 西の滄海』(1994)
『風の万里 黎明の空』(1994)
『図南の翼』(1996)
を読みました。
『十二国記』シリーズ 作品 : ★
内容も面白かったですし、『十二国記』シリーズ前に読んでいた
ファンタジーものは、西洋的な要素が強かったのでアジアを感じる
『十二国記』は新鮮でした。
言葉や物語の隠された意味や何の象徴なのかといった深読みをせず、私にとっては、純粋に娯楽としての読書でした。
『十二国記』は、暴力的描写もかなりありますが、それにも耐えることができ、自分として読書の幅が多少なりとも広がったことが嬉しく思います。
(それ以後、ホラー小説は読んでいません)
『図南の翼』後、本編上の進行は止まりました。
本編の続きを待つ間に英国留学を決意し、留学前に持っていた
『十二国記シリーズ』の本を友人に譲りました。
いつか本編の続きが読みたいと思いつつ、日本を離れました。
外伝『華胥の幽夢』(カショノユメ/ 2001) と
『丕緒の鳥』(ヒショノトリ / 2013)
は出版されました。
これらの本を読みましたが、外伝と知りつつも、本編の進行を待ち望んでいた私は、落胆が大きく、楽しむ気持ちになれませんでした。
実は『図南の翼』の後、本編の
『黄昏の岸 暁の天』(タソガレノキシ アカツキノソラ/ 2001)
が出版されていました。
『白銀の墟 玄の月』の読後、『黄昏の岸 暁の天』が未読であったことに気がつきました。
『白銀の墟 玄の月』1巻のはじめに、『黄昏の岸 曉の天』の物語の要約が散りばめられたいたので、物語の理解には困りませんでした。
『黄昏の岸 曉の天』を購入し、読みました。
『黄昏の岸 曉の天』については次のセクションに載せます。

About Works of "The Twelve Kingdoms" series : ★
The content was also interesting, and the fantasy thing I was reading before "The Twelve Kingdoms" series had a strong Western element, so the "Twelve Kingdoms" that felt Asian was fresh.
For me, it was purely entertainment reading, without a deep reading of the hidden meanings of words and stories and what they symbolized.
"The Twelve Kingdoms" has a lot of violent depictions, but I was able to endure it, so I was pleased that my range of reading had expanded to some extent.
Though I am not good at horror, thanks to my interest in the writer Fuyumi Ono, I was able to read and enjoy
"Shiki" (two parts / 1998 / Shinchosha).
(I haven't read horror novels since then.)
After "The Aspiring Wings", the progress on the main story had stopped.
While I had waited for a next main story, I decided to study abroad in Britain and before studying abroad, I handed over my books of "The Twelve Kingdoms Series" to one of my friends.
In 2004, I left Japan, hoping to read the rest of the main story someday.
The side stories "The Dream of Prosperity" (2001) and
"The Birds of Hisho" (2013) have been published.
After reading these books, I was so disappointed that I couldn't feel the enjoyment of the progress of the main story, even though I knew they are side stories.
In fact, after "The Aspiring Wings"(1996), the main story,
"The Shore at Twilight, The Sky at Daybreak"
( "Tasogare-no-Kishi Akatsuki-no-Sora"/ 2001)
was published.
After I finished reading "Silver Ruins, Black Moon" (Volumes 1 to 4)",
I realized that I hadn't read "The Shore at Twilight, The Sky at Daybreak" .
Throughout "Silver Ruins, Black Moon" (Vol.1), the story of
"Twilight Shore at Twilight" was dotted, so it was not difficult to understand the story.
I bought "The Shore at Twilight, The Sky at Daybreak" and read.

A. タイトルの意味 / Title's Meaning
通常麒麟は金色の髪 (鬣 /タテガミ) で、十二国の世界では、金色の髪は麒麟のみです。
ですが、泰麒は黒い髪で、黒麒 (コッキ)で、大変珍しい麒麟です。
驍宗は白い髪で、赤い目(瞳)をしており、彼の容貌は十二国の世界では特徴的です。
タイトルの '白銀の墟 (シロオガネノオカ)' は、驍宗、'玄の月 (クロノツキ)' は泰麒を表していると思います。
また、'白銀の墟'は、戴国そのものを象徴しているのでしょう。
戴国は、北の国で、冬の寒さは厳しく、白銀の世界になります。
その上、国が荒廃し、'墟' (廃墟) のようになっています。

Title's Meaning
"Silver Ruins, Black Moon" (Volumes 1 to 4) is the final volumes of the "The Twelve Kingdoms" series and is a story about Tai country.
Kirins : ★ usually have golden hair (mane) in the world of the Twelve Kingdoms, only Kirins have golden hair.
However, Taiki has black hair, is a black Kirin (kokki) and is a very unusual Kirin.
The King, Gyousou has silver hair and red eyes (pupils), and his appearance is characteristic of the world of the Twelve Kingdoms.
I think the title 'Silver Ruins' represents Gyousou, and 'Black Moon' represents Taiki.
Also, the 'Silver Ruins' may symbolize the Tai country itself.
Tai country is a northern country, and the cold of winter is severe, and it becomes plains of silvery white.
What's more, the country has been devastated and looks like a 'ruin'.
B. 王と麒麟 / King and Kirin
先にも書きましたが、私は『黄昏の岸 曉の天』を読み損ねていたので、泰麒が角を失っていることや蓬莱 (日本) から帰ってきていることを知りませんでした。
なので、『白銀の墟 玄の月』で、泰麒が登場した際には、涙ぐんでしまいました。
戻ってきた泰麒は、蓬莱で16歳まで成長していました。
涙ぐんだ自分に驚き、これは、麒麟を待ち望んでいた戴国民と同じなのではないかと思いました。
幼い時の泰麒は、非常にあどけなく、純粋無垢 (ジュンスムク) に描かれていました。
16歳の泰麒は、外見も精神も成長しており、読者である私も、登場人物たちもその成長に驚かされます。
成長した泰麒を感じると作者がなぜ幼い泰麒を非常にあどけなく描いたのか、その理由がわかります。
驍宗 (ギョウソウ) は、6年間も山に閉じ込められ、生き抜きます。
そのサバイバルな生活が凄まじく、心身ともに並外れていることが印象づけられます。
驍宗、泰麒ともに、王としての力、麒麟としての力がない状態、天命に授けられた力がない状態で、一人の人間として立つ潔さ、生き抜く強さがあることを作者は描いています。
また泰麒の場合は、麒麟の性質そのものにも抗って道を開こうとします。
ここに泰麒が黒麒である特別性の理由も含まれています。

King and Kirin
As I wrote earlier, I missed reading "Twilight Shore at Twilight", so I didn't know that Taiki had lost his horn and that he had returned from Hourai (Japan).
So, when Taiki appeared in "Silver Ruins, Black Moon", I was moved to tears.
Taiki returned, and had grown up to 16 years old in Hourai.
I was surprised at my tearful self and thought that this was the same as the Tai people who had been waiting for their Kirin.
Taiki at an early age was a very lovely child and was depicted in pure innocence.
16-year-old Taiki is growing in appearance and mental, and I as a reader, and the characters are amazed by his growth.
When I feel the grown Taiki, I can see why the author depicted the child Taiki so innocently.
Gyousou was trapped in the mountains for six years and survives.
It is impressive that his survival life is tremendous and his mind and body are extraordinary.
The author depicts that both Gyousou and Taiki have the purity to stand as a human being and the strength to survive in the state of having no power as a king, no power as a Kirin, and no power given from heaven.
In the case of Taiki, he tries to open the way against the very nature of Kirin.
This also includes the reason for the peculiarity of Taiki having black hair.
C. 表紙 / Covers
『白銀の墟 玄の月』1巻の表紙は、泰麒、2巻は驍宗、3巻は李斎です。
読書中、4巻の表紙が誰であるかという疑問を持っていましたが、読後、これは阿選だと確信しました。
阿選は、禁軍将軍でしたが、泰麒の角を切り落とし、驍宗から王位を簒奪 (サンダツ)しました。
阿選が憎々しく、獣のように描かれるのでなく、悲しげに、物憂い感じに描かれているところが好きです。
驍宗は、6年間、山に閉じ込められていましたが、阿選もまた、嫉妬という感情に閉じ込められてしまったのだと思います。
阿選は嫉妬の感情を自制できず、対象者の驍宗を遠ざけ、驍宗の存在を示す物、感じさせる人たちを葬ります。
ですがそれでも阿選は報われなかった、満足できなかったように思います。
その阿選の様子をイラストレイターの山田章博氏は、よく捉えて描いてると感じます。

I think that the cover of Volume 1 of "Silver Ruins, Black Moon'' is Taiki, Volume 2 is Gyousou, Volume 3 is Risai : ★ a general.
Asen was a general of the Royal Guard, who had cut off Taiki's horn, and usurped the throne from Gyousou.
I like the fact that Asen is not painted hatefully like a beast, but sadly with melancholy.
Gyousou was trapped in the mountains for six years, but I think Asen was also trapped in the feeling of jealousy.
Asen cannot control his feelings of jealousy, he kept Gyousou away, killed those who support Gyousou and destroyed towns or villages allied with Gyousou.
However, I think that Asen was not rewarded and was not satisfied.
I feel that illustrator Akihiro Yamada captured the situation of Asen well.

D. 戦いの物語 / Battle Story
物語は、過酷な状況が続くので、私は何度も本を閉じ、休憩を取らずには、読み進めることができませでした。
また、『十二国記』シリーズの最終の物語であるので、読み終わってしまう寂しさもあり、一気に読むこともできませんでした。
作者が、良い人柄や大切な役割の登場人物を殺してしまうことを私は知っていたので、読みながら誰が死んでしまうのかを、ドキドキしつつ読みました。
片腕を失った、将軍の李斎 (リサイ) は死なないと信じていましたが、他の少なからぬ数の良い人達、仲間は死んでしまいます。
李斎は助かりますが、彼女の騎獣、飛燕は亡くなってしまいます。
物語は戦いがメインですし、ご都合主義に展開しないためにも、ある程度の犠牲は仕方ありません。
物語は、驍宗サイドと阿選サイドの戦いというだけでなく、それぞれの人物の内面の葛藤、戦いでもあります。
作家は、物語をドラマティックにするために、登場人物を容赦なく痛めつけます。
元々、この作者の文章はキビキビとしていますが、『白銀の墟 玄の月』は一層、歯切れ良く、時として厳しい語調にも感じました。
時々、どうしてこんなに厳しい書き方をするのだろう、故意的に？それとも年月による作者のリズム感の変化だろうかと疑問に思いました。
荒廃した国、それぞれの登場人物の過酷な状況を文章そのものでも表現しているのだと推測しました。
物語の終盤で、泰麒が麒麟らしからぬ異常な行動を読者に納得させるためのしかけの1つが文章のキレキレの切れ味だったのだと理解しました。
全体の物語は、丁寧に描かれ、構成もしっかりとしており、非常に読み応えがありました。
謀反 (ムホン) の張本人、阿選 の最期はどのように描かれるのか、興味がありましたが、物語としては書かれず、史書 (シショ)での描写にとどまっています。
阿選をそそのかしたのは、琅燦 (ロウサン)であり、彼女は、驍宗輩下からの裏切り者のように私には読み取れましたが、物語の最後で、
泰麒は彼女は敵ではないと考えていました。
泰麒側にも手を差し伸べているらしいところもあるのです。
私には琅燦を推測する程度にしか理解できませんでした。
琅燦はトリックスターのように感じました。
彼女は、とても賢いので、通常の世の成り行きに満足できず、コトをおこし、人の右往左往している姿、国が揺れる様をゲーム感覚で楽しんでいるように思います。
もしかすると彼女は泰麒に対して嫉妬し、自分の手は直接は汚さずに、阿選を利用して、泰麒の角を切らせたのかもしれません。
彼女が阿選と違うところは、自分の嫉妬心を制御できるところでしょう。
あらゆる戦いは彼女にとってゲームなのだと私は理解しています。
泰麒が彼女を敵ではないと判断しても、私は彼女が好きになれません。
最終巻を通して、泰麒をどん底に突き落として、這い上がってくる様子を書くのだという作者の決意が伝わってきました。

作者の泰麒に対しての深い愛情を感じます。
そして泰麒は、這い上がってきました。
琅燦に
「化け物だな」
と言わしめるほどに成長して...。
(私に言わせれば、琅燦の方がよっぽど化け物です）

Battle Story
The story continues to be harsh, so I closed books many times and couldn't read them without taking a break.
Also, since it is the final story of the "The Twelve Kingdoms" series,
I couldn't read it in one go because I felt sad after reading it.
I had known that the author would kill characters with good personalities and important roles, so I was ill at ease to read who would die.
The general, Risai, who lost one arm, I believed that she would not die, however, quite a few other good people and companions would die.
Risai is saved, but her Kijyuu 'Hien', dies.
The battles are the main thing in the story, and there is no choice but to sacrifice to some extent so the story avoids being contrived.
The story is not only the battle between the Gyousou side and the Asen side, but also the internal conflicts and battles of each person.
The author mercilessly hurts the characters to make the story dramatic.
Originally, the author's writing was crisp, but I felt in "Silver Ruins, Black Moon" that the writing was even more crisp and sometimes harsh.
I wondered,
'Why is the author so strict sometimes, intentionally?'
it was deliberately ? or it was a change in the author's sense of rhythm over the years?
I presumed that the writing itself expresses the harsh conditions of the devastated country and each character.
At the end of the story, I realized that one of the devices for convincing readers
of the unusual behavior of Taiki, who wasn't like other Kirin, was the sharpness of the writing.
The whole story was carefully drawn, well-structured and very readable.
I was curious about how the final stage of Asen, the rebellious person himself, would be drawn, in fact it is not depicted in the story.
However, just their history (Shisho) shows Asen failed.
For me, Rousan incited Asen, and she seemed to be a traitor to Gyousou, although Taiki thinks that she is not his enemy at the end of the story.
She seems to be reaching out to Taiki as well.
I could only understand Rousan to the extent that I guessed it.
I feel Rousan is like a trickster.
She is so smart that she is not satisfied with the normal course of the world, so she schemed to create a war and I think she enjoys the way people move around and the country sways like a game.
Perhaps she was jealous of Taiki and used Asen to cut off Taiki's horn without directly polluting her hands.
What makes her different from Asen is that she can control her jealousy.
I understand that every battle is a game for her.
Even if Taiki decides she isn't her enemy, I don't like her.
Through the final volumes, I feel the author's determination to write about Taiki who she pushes to the bottom and how he crawls up.
"A lion pushes its cub into a bottomless ravine."
(Originally this came from "Taiheiki" which is a Japanese historical epic written in the late 14th century and covers the period from 1319 to 1367)
The author was harsh enough with Taiki to kick him down into the abyss of a ravine as lions are said to do.
I feel that this is the author's deep love for Taiki.
And Taiki has crawled up.
He grows up, such that Rousan can say
"He is a monster"
(If you ask me, Rousan is a monster)

私は4巻連続で、自分のペースで読むことができたので、満足しました。
『十二国記』シリーズを全巻購入し、再読したい気持ちになりました...ですが、読んでいない本の山を思うと、それはずっと後のお楽しみなります。
シリーズ総合計販売数は、1,000万部を超えているそうです。
2020年にオリジナル短編集が刊行される予定でしたが、実現されませんでした。
まあ、読者は、またか...という受け止め方で、それほど落胆も驚きもしないでしょう。
私は新しい短編集を気長に待ちますが、できれば '私が生きているうちに出版してくれたら' と願っています。
こんな願いを『白銀の墟 玄の月』出版前にもしていました。
『十二国記』シリーズの多くの読者は、'待ち慣れ' していますよね？
そして、この作者は、どんなに読者を待たせても、『十二国記』の
世界を破壊しないと私は、信じています。
『ゲド戦記』の作者、アーシュラ・K・ル＝グウィン(1929 - 2018)や『ナルニア国物語』の作者、C・S・ルイス (1898 - 1963)
が犯した過ち、または罪を小野不由美さんは犯さないのです。

I was able to read 4 volumes continuing at my own pace, so I was happy .
Now, I think I can enjoy the side stories, "The Dream of Prosperity" and "The Birds of Hisho".
I have a feeling that I would buy the complete "The Twelve Kingdoms" series and want to reread them ... but when I think of my "Mountain of Unread Books", I'll enjoy them a long time later.
The total number of sales of the series is said to exceed 10 million.
The original collection of short stories was scheduled to be published in 2020, but it was not realized.
Well, readers will not be so disappointed or surprised by the fact.
I'll wait patiently for the new collection, but hopefully while I'm alive.
I made such a wish even before the publication of "Silver Ruins, Black Moon" .
Many readers of The Twelve Kingdoms series are 'familiar with waiting', aren't they (we)?
And I believe that the author, no matter how long the reader waits, will not destroy the world of 'The Twelve Kingdoms'.

『白銀の墟 玄の月』以前の物語が要約され、アニメーションだけの要素 (アニメーションオリジナル) もあります。
小説が映画化やアニメーション化されると違う物語になったり、完成度が低かったりします。
ですが、『十二国記』のアニメーションは、完璧ではないものの、原作に忠実に描かれているように感じます。
私は、本帰国 (2009年) 後にYoutubeで『十二国記』のアニメーションを見ました。
英語の字幕がついていたので、夫のRにも見ることができ、彼も気に入っていました。
今、彼は『白銀の墟 玄の月』の物語がアニメーション化されることを切望していますが、前回の放映 (2002 - 03年) からあまりにも時が経過してしまっているので、アニメーション化はないだろうと私は思っています。
もちろん、実現するなら嬉しいですが...。
『十二国記』の小説もアニメーションも私にとっては娯楽です。

When a novel is made into a film or animated, it becomes a different story or less complete.
I feel that the animation of the "The Twelve Kingdoms" is not perfect, however, it is drawn fairly faithfully to the original.
After I returned to Japan (2009), I watched the animation of the "The Twelve Kingdoms" on Youtube.
It has English subtitles, so my husband R also could see it and he liked it too.
Now he is hopeful to watch the animation of the story of "Silver Ruins, Black Moon", but it's been so long since the earlier airings (2002 - 03) that I don't think it will be animated.
Of course, if it could be realized I would be happy.
Both the novel and the animation of "The Twelve Kingdoms" are entertainment for me.
