Place

Hashikui-iwa Rock Sign
A sign that looks like it was made of driftwood.
I like it.
I also like the idea of using a real 'pile: post'.

Place
The last tourist attraction on the first day of our tour was Hashigui-iwa Rocks.

First, I get caught up in the sound of this word, and gui (kui):  '杭'  : Pile sounds like kui :  '食い'  : eat in Japanese.

Even more so after hearing the rock-eating monster in the Legend at  'Koza-gawa River Monolith'.
About  'Koza-gawa River Monolith', below.

The Rocks are called "Hashiguiiwa" because the appearance of rocks lined up in a straight line look like bridge piles : Gui : Kui of Hashi.

Hashigui-iwa Rock is located in Kushimoto chō (Town), Higashimuro DistrictWakayama Prefecture.

Bentenjima Monolith
I would call it a 'Monolith' rather than
'Ichimaiiwa' ; monolith in Japanese.
However,  maybe this is one of the Hashiguiiwa Rocks
beyond the Island?

Scenic Beauty

Scenic Beauty
No matter where I photographed Hashigui-iwa Rocks from, or perhaps anyone, you will get a moving photograph.

On the spot, I took many similar photographs.

It is a landscape that cannot be seen anywhere else.

Two Legends
A. 立岩伝説 / Standing Rocks Legend

There are two legends of "Hashiguii-wa Rocks" (Folk Tales).

Roadside Station at the southernmost tip of Honshu

(Kōbō-Daishi / 774 - 835 )

"Standing Rocks Legend"
From the summary of  (only in Japanese)
"Once upon a time, Kūkai (Kōbō-Daishi /774 - 835 ) made a bet with Amanojaku ; a demon-like creature in Japanese folklore,
whether he could bridge from Kushimoto to the offshore island overnight.
When Kūkai had almost finished making the bridge stakes,
Amanojaku guessed he would lose the bet as it was, and he mimiced a crowing cockerel and  Kūkai misunderstood that the morning had come.
Kūkai gave up and left the place in the process of making it.
Therefore, only the stakes of the bridge remained."

Kuroshio Currents

These from below

Takichi's Tears
The other one is "Taikichi's Tears":
From the summary of  /  (only in Japanese).

"A long time ago, a very honest man named Takichi lived on Kii Oshima Island.
There is the Kuroshio Current off the coast of Kii Oshima Island, and Kuroshio Umibozu yōkai from Japanese folklore lived there.
When Umibozu begins to get angry, the sea becomes rough and people cannot cross from the Island to Kushimoto.
Takichi wanted to be able to cross the shore opposite from the Island even when Umibozu begins to get angry, so Takichi prayed to God
"I will give you the life of Takichi, so please bridge the island."
One night, God appeared and told him,
"I'll help you, so let's build a bridge together.
But I will have to return to the Kingdom of God tomorrow, so let's build it overnight. "
Takichi built rock pillar after rock pillar.
When Umibozu saw this, he was surprised and imitated the voice of a cockerel.
Cockerels in Kushimoto were awoken and started crowing, and God left.
Takichi
"It was almost time for a great bridge to be built ...."
When Takichi thought about it, he spilled tears.
Takichi was sad and jumped into the waves.
Takichi ascended to heaven, even after he died, he sometimes wept.
Evening showers are the tears of Takichi, and God felt sorry for Takichi, and hung the Rainbow Bridge over the clouds.
"Come on, look! The bridge is completed.",
to comfort him.
The bridge pillars that Takichi struggled to build on the sea still remain."

The stories make me want to question them ; the monk who had name and power, and the God were deceived by voices that imitate a cockerel, but legends and folk tales can not be enjoyed if I care about that, can they?

Flower and Ice-cream
Hibiscus blooming in a carpark.

Kumquat Ice-cream
Usually R does not like ice-cream,
though often he eats an ice-cream in trips, Japan.
Apparently, the pear ice cream he ate for the first time
at the Tottori Dunes felt very delicious,
and after that, he seems to be trying special ice-cream
when on a trip.
For him, this ice cream seems to have been delicious.
I also tasted it. It was delicious.

Ilusion?
This ice cream has a slogan of 'Maboroshi' ('illusion' in japanese).
I had never seen Kumquat ice cream, this was the first time.
This kumquat is said to be cultivated on Kii Oshima Island.
They had to close in 2012, but reappeared
in response to tourists' wishes for a resurgence.
The base milk also uses Kushimoto's Owashi milk.
All the ingredients are from Kushimoto.

That is the next section.
