1) 世界遺産 / World Heritage 

'明治日本の産業革命遺産 製鉄・製鋼、造船、石炭産業'は、2015年に世界遺産リストに登録され、山口・福岡・佐賀・長崎・熊本・鹿児島・岩手・静岡の8県に点在しています。

その中のエリア1の萩には、下記５箇所あります。

私達のツアーでは、3)を除く、４箇所に行きました。

私は、4) 萩城下町の中に含まれる、'萩 三の丸北門屋敷' に、Rと泊まりました。

今回のツアーでは、北門屋敷と違うホテルとを選べました。

私がここを選んだ理由は、もちろんRのためもありますが、実は父への詫びの気持ちがありました。

何年も前に、父がこのホテルを利用して気に入り、ぜひ私を連れて行きたいと言っていました。

私が、その時間を父のために作ることができないまま父が亡くなってしまっていたので、ずっと気にしていました。

今回泊まることができて、気が楽になりました。(娘は本当に勝手です）

World Heritage 

'Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining' was registered as World Heritage listing in 2015 and they are dotted over 8 Prefectures : Yamaguchi, Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Iwate and Shizuoka.

Japanese Meiji Industrial Revolution : ★ in English.

In Yamaguchi, there are 5 sites  : Hagi Proto-industrial Heritage, below.

We went to 4 sites, but not 3) Ohitayama Tatara Iron Works in our tour.

I stayed with R in a hotel,  'Hagi San-no-Maru Kitamon Yashiki' in 4) Hagi Castle Town.

I write about 'Kitamon Yashiki' in this section.

I could select our hotel in this tour.

I selected this hotel, of course for R, though actually it was my apology to my father.

It was long time ago when my father stayed in this hotel and he liked here, so he said to me he would take me to this hotel.

However, while I could not make time for him, he passed away, his offer had been on my mind for a long time.

I feel relieved that I could visit and stay there this time. (A daughter is really willful.)

2) '北門屋敷' / 'Kitamon Yashiki'

北門屋敷は、萩城下町の旧上級武家地に位置しています。

武家 (ブケ)とは、主君の元で、軍事の役職 (官職) を家業としている一族でした。
武家については下記。

位が高い武士がお城近くに住みました。

のちに行く松下村塾は、下町の地域になります。

'北門屋敷'は、吉敷毛利家 (ヨシキモウリケ) 屋敷跡にあります。

'Kitamon Yashiki'

'Kitamon Yashiki' is located in a former high-ranking Bushi residence area in the Castle town.

Bushi belonged to Buke which meant Daimyou and Hatamoto, the family son followed in their father's military post (civil service) business, under their Lord.

The high-rank Buke lived close to a castle.

Later we visited Shōkasonjuku Academy which was located in a downtown area.

'Kitamon Yashiki' stands where the Yoshikimouri Famiy residence used to be.

外 / Outside

りっぱな門構え / Grand Gate

この周辺を散策できるのかと思っていましたら、まったくできませんでした。

北門屋敷に泊まったのに残念。

萩城跡にも行っていません。

I thought we would be walking  around here, although we could not at all,

even though we stayed in Kitamon-Yashiki.

We did not visit Hagi Castle Ruin.

城下町の風情は感じられます。

左が北門屋敷、右は山口県立萩高等学校です。

この高校は、藩校明倫館の流れを汲んで、1872年(明治3年)に創設されました。

明倫館は、1718年に創設され、現在は萩市立明倫小学校の敷地内となっていて、

有備館などの遺構が残っているそうです。

もちろん、私達は、何も見ていません....(涙)

I feel the Castle Town is tasteful.
On the left is Kitamon-Yashiki and 
on the right is Yamaguchi Prefectural Hagi Senior High School.
The High School is descended from Hako-Meirinkan : the Chōshū Domain school  which was established in 1872.
Nowadays Meirinkan's relics are in Hagi City Meirin primary school.
Of course we did not look at them at all...(tears)

They can run in a town like this, they are lucky, aren't they?

北門屋敷の門を内側から見ます。
門の向こうの建物は萩高です。

Looking at the gate from inside and the building behind is the High School.

屋内 / Inside

ツインンルーム、'椿'
スタッフが荷物を持って部屋まで案内してくれます。
そのときに、あっ！これは迷いそう.....、
お城にありがちな迷路的構造を感じました。
なので、珍しく道順を真剣に頭の中に叩き込みました。
私は迷いませんでしたが、紅茶用のミルクを買いにホテルの外へ出たRは
戻ってくるときにホテル内で迷い、スタッフに聞きました。

Twin Room, 'Tsunaki' : 'Camellia'
The staff had our baggage and guided us to our room.
At that time I realized Oh! the layout seems to be a maze like a castle,
 I would be lost and then I, unusually, seriously started remembering about the route, so I did not get lost while we stayed there.
But after R went out of the hotel for milk for English tea, 
he did loose his way in the hotel, so he asked a member of staff.

私達の部屋はツインルーム和室なので、残念ながら庭の景色は見られません。
ですが、二人には広い部屋ですし、床の間もあります。
ここには写っていませんが椅子とコーヒーテーブルもあったので、
この大きなテーブルと座椅子はほとんど使いませんでした。

豪華すぎず、みすぼらしくもなく、落ちついた雰囲気の部屋。
長年連れ添った夫婦のような部屋でした。
けれど、お互いに関心は失っているという感じ？

こんな表現でわかりますか？

居心地は悪くはないけれど、またここに来たいとは思わない...

これは 、'この和室の作り' なのに庭が見えないからかもしれません。

庭が見えると長年連れ添った仲の良い夫婦という印象になるように思います。

Our room was a Japanese room with twin-beds,
unfortunately it does not have a garden view.
However, the room is wide for us and has a Tokonoma, which 

is a built-in recessed space in a Japanese style reception room, 

in which items for artistic appreciation are displayed.
Although this photograph does not show eveything, 
there are chairs and a coffee table,
we did not use the big table and the zaisu : legless chairs.

It is not too gorgeous, is not shabby and has a decorous atmosphere.

The room seems to be a couple who has been married for a long time.
However, I felt the couple had lost interest in each other?
Do you understand these expressions？

It was not uncomfortable but I would not come again....
This might be because even though this is 'the Japanese style room' 
it does not have a garden.
If I could see a garden from this room, my impression could seem to be of a couple who have been married for a long time and they have harmonious relationship.

初めて、和式と洋式の二つのトイレがある部屋に泊まりました。
This was the first time I stayed in a room which 
has two toilets one Japanese style and one western style.

イングリッシュガーデンもあるそうですが、目にとまりませんでした。

I heard they have an English Garden too, my eye did not catch it.

てっさがメインだったのに、食い意地がはって撮影し忘れました！(笑)

Fugu Sashimi was the main dish, although I forgot to photograph it
 because of my appetite, being gluttonous. (laugh)

椿

バスガイドさんが、椿は地面に落ちた風景が咲いている時よりも良いと

言っていたのを思い出しました。

そういう風景に美を感じるのは日本人らしいことなのでないかと思います。

Camellia

This reminded me that the bus guide had said 

'When Camellias are down on the ground it is better than 
when they blossom on the trees.'

I think it is very Japanese for people who can feel the beauty in a view like that.

瓦そば

瓦そばが食べたいと思っていたら、ここに！嬉しい！
ウエイトレスの方から、西南戦争(1877)の際に野営していた薩摩軍の兵士たちが、鍋の代わりに瓦を使用して料理したのだと聞きました。
そしてなぜか、今は、長州であった山口の名物になっているということでした。
その後、知ったのですが、薩摩瓦そばを山口の川棚温泉(カワタナ)で旅館を営む高瀬慎一が宿泊者向けの料理として開発し、
人気が出て、ご当地グルメになったそうです。

美味しいからというよりも、おもしろいから人気があるのだと思います。

Kawara Soba : Noodle on a Roof Tile

I wanted to have Kawara soba : Noodle on a Roof Tile, here, I was pleased!
A waitress told me the story about during the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877, Satsuma soldiers were encamped and they cooked meat and vegetables using roof tiles as frying pans outside, and somehow nowadays it has become adopted in Yamaguchi Prefecture, the Chōshū Domain.

Later I found out that Shinichi Takase managed his hotel in Kawatana Onsen which is in Yamaguchi, he developed this cooking for his customers to use it became popular and nowadays it is a local feature.
I think it is fun rather than delicious.

お刺身、美味しい！

イカとヒラマサ。食べられる花もあり、春を先取り。

四角い薄いものは、大根です。

Osashimi Delicious! 

Squid and Hiramasa : Yellowtail Amberjack.

They include an edible flower which shows Spring is coming.

It is a square of very thin Dikon which is  is a mild-flavored radish.

かぼちゃのクズ寄せ
セルフィーユが日本食に使用されていて新鮮でした。
シェフの前向きさが感じられます。

Pumpkin Kuzu as a Jelly 
I felt their use of French Parsley with Japanese food was new and fresh.
I feel the chef's attitude is positive.

どれも繊細な味でした。

 Three Starters 
Everything is delicate taste.

ビールも飲んでお酒も飲みました。
あっ！右端にちょっとてっさが見えます！

We had beer and Sake, too.
Oh! I can see Fugu Sashimi a little, on the right.

茶碗蒸し  /  Chawanmushi  
Chawamushi is an egg custard dish, it is not sweet.

ヒラマサのあら焚き
Boiled Fish :  Yellowtail Amberjack

ごはんとお汁、デザートが最後についています。

トータルの量が私には丁度良かったです。

美味しいお夕飯でした。ごちそうさまでした。

The last, a bowl of boiled rice and a cup of soup as Japanese style 

and a dessert. The total amount suited me. 
The dinner was very good. Thank you very much.

朝ごはん / Breakfast 

こんな長い廊下をくねくね歩いて行きます。
こいう構造が北門屋敷の特徴なのかもしれません？

We walked down on long corridors and there are a few zigzags.
The layout might be their feature?

この階段は登らなくても良いのです。
この階段脇に、エミール・ガレ (1846 - 1904) のコレクションがありました。

We did not have to climb these steps.
Beside the staircase, there is a collection of Émile Gallé (1846 - 1904).

総けやき造りのダイニング 

本物の大きな暖炉では、木がぱちぱち音をさせていました。

There is a big real fireplace and the fire crackled cheerfully.

昨晩、ウエイトレスさんがRが生卵が食べられるかと聞いてくれて、
「食べられません。火が通っていれば大丈夫です。
出し巻き卵は大好きです」
「お約束はできませんよ」
というお返事でしたが、だし巻き卵を用意していただいていました。
ご配慮、感謝いたします。(いつものメニューだったのかもしれませんが）
鴨肉まである朝食にもかかわらず、Rはバイキングスタイルのコーヒー付き
朝食が好きなのです。
私はこちらのタイプが好き！美味しかったです。

Last night the waitress asked me if R can eat raw egg,
I said 'He cannot. If it is cooked he could.
He loves Dashimaki-tamago :  Japanese omelette'
She said 'I do not promise'.
However, here is Dashimaki-tamago.
Thank you for your consideration. (Even though it appears to be normal.)
In spite of this gorgeous breakfast, even including duck, 
R prefers to have a buffet style Breakfast with coffee.
I like this more than a buffet style! It was delicious.

残念なことに、父がとても気に入っていた、
朝食時のナスの田楽は食べられませんでした。

Unfortunately I could not have a dish, Dengaku of aubergine
which was my father's favourite, here with breakfast.

4) 温泉 / Onsen

写真は撮れませんでしたが、ここで一番良かったのは、温泉です。

温度が違う露天風呂もありました。

屋内のお風呂は塩気がありました。

大きくはありませんが、人が少ないので、十分です。

温泉や露天風呂をほぼ独り占めでき、静かに入れ、ゆったりできて本当に良かったです。

温泉が苦手なRにすすめたら、浴衣に着替え、嬉しそうに見えました。

るんるん気分で温泉へ。

やっぱり、彼には合わないようで、2度と温泉には入らないとご立腹！

まあ、私は、今後も温泉は楽しめるので、ちょっと残念ですが、彼がだめでも構いません。

Onsen

An 'Onsen' is a term for hot springs, though the term is often used to describe the bathing facilities and inns around the hot springs. 

Even though I could not photograph, for me their best feature is their Onsen, hot spring baths.

The indoor's bath is a little salty.

There are two open‐air Onsen baths and they are different temperatures.

The baths are not big, but only one or two people were there, so they are good enough for me.

Main bath and outside bath were mostly dominated by me, it was quiet and relaxed so it was really good.

I recommended R, who is weak about Onsen, to try this time.

He wore Ukata, seemed to be happy and in exuberant mood.

We went to the Onesn.

Unfortunately he does not suit it and he said he would not tray again ever never ever never ever....he was angry!

Well, it is a little 'that's too bad', but I will enjoy and I do not care R hates Onsen.
