『蛇を踏む 』を読み出しとき、これは文学界の現代アートだ! と
思いました。
こういう本が出版され、芥川賞 (単庫本 / 文藝春秋 1996) までとってしまうとは！
嬉しい驚きです。
ある日、主人公のヒワ子は蛇を踏みます。
その蛇は中年女性に変身し、自分はヒワ子の母親である
と主張します。
ヒワ子とその女性との奇妙な生活が始まるのです。

川上さんは蛇という軟体質を選んだり、イメージ的にも脅威感を与える対象を選び、それをまた変身させたりして物事を一定させることをしません。
きっと専門家の人々が読むといろいろなことが込められているのが、わかるのでしょう。
けれど、私のような素人はその世界を楽しめればよいのです。

自分が活性化されたり、何かの感動があったり、刺激されたりすれば、その作品の働きは十分にあります。
少なくとも私は現代アートをそのようにとらえていて、現代アートを見る事が好きです。

また一方では、自分なりに、勝手に分析したり、解釈したりするのも好きです。
そういう思考は私の日常生活ではあまりありません。
日頃使用しない頭の部分を使うことは素敵なことに思えます。

何通りもの答えがあったり、考え方ができたりする楽しみをこの本は私に与えてくれます。
答えがひとつでないことは、気持ちが落ち着かない面もあるかもしれませんが、答えがひとつしかないと信じ込むよりもずっと健康的なことだと思います。
育った家を出て他の土地へ行ったり (自立したり)、海外旅行に行ったり、また海外で住んだりすると、今まで信じていたことや当たり前に思ったことが違ったり、いろいろな予測もしないできごとがおきてびっくりします。
そういうときに、柔軟な思考でいないと自分がどんどんやられてしまいます。
この本を読むという事は、固く生真面目な頭に働きかけ、柔軟な思考を導くことになるのではないかなと思いますがいかがでしょう？

『神様』は8編の短編集で、のほほ〜んとした空気を感じました。
くま、河童、幽霊などが各編に登場します。
おとぎ話ではないけれど、限りなくそういう世界に近い話です。
こちらはあまり現代アートに感じませんでしたね〜。

When I started reading "Tread On A Snake", I felt this is contemporary art in the literary world.
I was delightfully surprised that a book like this was published, as well as was later awarded the Akutagawa Prize (Hardback, Bungeishunju Ltd.1996).
One day a heroine, Hiwako, treads on a snake.
The snake transforms into a middle aged woman and the woman asserts that she is Hiwako's mother.
Then Hiwako had a strange life living with the woman.

Kawakami selected a snake which looks like a mollusc, and the image is threatening.
Moreover she made the snake change its form in the novel.

Probably literary specialists catch on to many things in the book, although it is enough for an amateur like me, just to enjoy the world.
That is the same as contemporary art!
The arts work well if we or the viewer could be refreshed, impressed by something and excited.

On the other hand I also like analyzing or interpreting the art that I like.
This type of thinking is not usually in my daily life, so it is wonderful that I use some parts of my brain which I do not use everyday.
This book gives me the pleasure of thinking that there are potentially many answers and that I can have many ways of thinking.

I think that sometimes people feel frustrated when there is not one clear answer, however, I think it is much more healthy than people believing implicitly in only one answer.
When people leave their parents's home (become independent), or travel abroad, or live in other countries, they are surprised that there are many unexpected events and that common sense can be so different .
At that time, if they do not have flexible thinking, they find life difficult and may come down one by one.

I guess that if you read this book you might find that flexible answers in the novel help you when you are at a time like that.
"God" is 8 short stories, they all have an easy-going atmosphere.
Each story features a fantasy being; a bear, or a kappa: a lovely Japanese water monster, or a ghost and so on.
They are not fairy tales, however, they are very close to fairy tales.
I do not feel they are contemporary art.
But I like it!

『センセイの鞄』(平凡社2001 /谷崎潤一郎賞) は純愛小説ですね。
老年のもと高校教師'センセイ'と、40歳に近くなった教え子'
ツキコさん'が居酒屋で偶然再会します。

'ツキコさん'である'わたし'の視点によって物語は語られます。
二人の距離は少しづつ近くなり、'わたし'は恋愛感情を抱くようになります。
上記(A)の2点の作品とは違った世界で、人間だけが出てくるお話です。
恋愛を薔薇やハートマークで飾り立てる書き方はしていませんが、
雨の中にアヤメの花が咲いているような書き方をしています。
アヤメは、'ツキコさん'で、雨は彼女に潤いをもたらす喜びであり、
彼女の悲しみの涙でもあります。

私は、たびたび、センセイが語る言葉にじ〜んとしたり、'ツキコさん' の言動が微笑ましかったり、穏やかないい気持ちに何度もさせてもらいました。
最近は活字の世界も映像の世界も、人々に強い印象を残そうと、
赤裸々な表現や残酷な表現を多く使用しているように私は感じています。

現代アートのような『蛇を踏む 』も素晴らしいですが、この本のように赤ちゃんの笑顔のような、理屈なく人を幸せな気持ちにしてくれる本も素晴らしいと思います。
'ツキコさん'は、恋愛中はセイセイの鞄であるセイセイの懐で甘え、
彼の死後はセンセイの鞄にセンセイとの思い出を入れて生きているのだと思います。

15万部売れ、映画化もされ、お芝居にもなったようです。
多くの人が暖かな気持ちにさせてくれることを望んでいるのですね。

'Sensei', an old man, a one-time high school teacher and 'Tsukiko San', a former student, almost 40 years old, meet by chance in a pub.
The story is told from her (Tsukiko San's) point of view ; 'I'.
The distance between them gradually lessens and 'I' has love for him.

I think this way of writing about the love, is not decorated with roses and heart marks, it is like an Iris flower in the rain.
The Iris is Tsukiko San, the rain enriches her as well as being her tears of sadness.

Often 'Sensei' says something which touched my heart, or her speech and behavior made me smile, so the love story made me feel calm and pleasant a few times.
Nowadays I feel that the print world and the picture world want to give strong impressions so their expressions are naked fact or too harsh.
"Tread on A Snake" is wonderful, like good contemporary art, although this book is wonderful too, like a smile on a baby's face which does not have to have any reason, it just makes people happy.
I think that when 'Tsukiko San' is falling in love, she is comfortable in Sensei's bosom which means 'Sensei's Briefcase', later she has been with his memory in 'Sensei's Briefcase'.
This book sold 15,000, and was made into a film and a play.
I understand that many people would make themselves warm, wouldn't they?
