| ガーデンへの道 / The Path to Garden |
ディール城見学の終了時に、イングリッシュ•ヘリテッジのスタッフにウオールマ城 / Walmer Castleを紹介されました。
その存在は知ってはいたのですが、お城見学は十分に思えていました。
けれども、そのスタッフは、ウオールマ城の庭を推していて、
ディール城からも近いし、といことで、ウオールマ城へやって来ました。
最初から私達は、もうお城見学はしないつもりでしたし、しませんでした。
庭へ出る時に、その一部を通り過ぎた程度です。
そして、庭はとても素敵！
勧めてくださったスタッフさん、本当にありがとうございました！
自分で企画したことですが、戦いの歴史に触れ、戦いの風景を想像し、城壁や大砲などのハードなものばかりに、触れていましたので、心身ともに疲れていた時に、この庭はとても救いになりました。

| When we finished Deal Castle, one of English Heritage staff
recommended 'Walmer Castle' to us and I knew it is close,
although we were 'castled out'.
However, the staff put in a good word for the castle, and anyway there is close to Deal Castle,
so we came to 'Walmer Castle'.
From beginning, we wouldn't look at in the castle and we didn't. When we went to the garden,
we just passed through a part of the castle.
And their gardens were very lovely!
Even though I included castles in the plan, I felt I had too much war history, have imagined fighting, and have seen many cannons, forbidding walls which are hard, leaving me very tired in mind and body, so these gardens helped me so much. This picture from 'English Heritage Pamphlet'. |

お城の形はDeal Castleに似ています。
イタリアのデザインの影響を受けたこの形で有名なのが、
ディール城/ Deal Castle
ウオールマ城 / Walmer Castle
サンドン城/ Sandown Castleで、
これらはヘンリー8世 (1491- 1545) がスペイン、フランスの
カトリック勢力からの侵入を防ぐために1539年に建てました。
ケントの海岸に砲弾を並べる要塞城で、
'Henrician Castles または'Device Fort'と呼ばれています。
('ヘンリー式城'、'カラクリ要塞'とでも訳すのかな〜？)
ローマ帝国軍も'サクソンシュアー/ Saxon Shore (3世紀〜4世紀)
という北海、英国海峡に沿った戦略の要塞を展開していました。
発想は同じですね。
この地域がいつの世も防御のポイントであることが感じられます。
三つの中でディール城/ Deal Castleが最大で、
当時の形をもっとも残しているようです。
ですが、ウオールマ城 / Walmer Castleはガーデンが素敵なので、
また訪れたいと思うのはこちらです。
 The shape is similar to Deal Castle.
Italian castle design influenced three castles :
Deal Castle, Walmer Castle, Sandown Castle built by Henry Ⅷ (1491 -1545) in 1539,
against Catholic power from Spain and France.
a chain of coastal artillery forts.
In the 3rd ~ the 4th century, this area was known
as Roman Empire Saxon Shore .
The ideas were the same.
I feel these areas are important for defence in every period.
Deal Castle is the biggest and remain mostly unchanged
from that period.
However, Walmer Castle's Gardens are lovely,
and if I come to the area again,
I would visit this castle rather than Deal Castle.

The Queen Mother's Garden

| 庭へはお城の中を通ります。 その前にお土産や植物のショップがあります。 We go through the castle to their gardens. There are shops for souvenirs and plants. |

| ここでいう'Queen Mother'とは 現女王(2013), エリザベス二世(1926 - )の母、 エリザベス•ボーズー＝ライアン (1900 - 2002)。 お２人ともエリザベスなので、エイザベス二世即位後は、 王太后 (HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother ) と 呼ばれるようになりました。 'Queen Mother'または'Queen Mam'の方が 一般的には、より使用されました。 Here, they say 'Queen Mother' who was mother of the present (2013) Queen: Elizabeth Ⅱ , Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon(1900 - 2002). Both are named Elizabeth, so after Elizabeth Ⅱ's coronation, she was called 'HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother'. More popularly she was often referred to as 'Queen Mother' or 'Queen Mam'. |

| 王太后は1978年に'Cinque Ports /シンク ポーツ'の領主権を 友人のSir Robert Menzies / ロバート メンジーズ卿 (1894 - 1978) から引き継ぎました。 Cinque Ports とは、ケントとサセックスの、 下記の５つの歴史的な沿岸の町のことです。 ヘイスティングズ / Hastings ニューロムニー / New Romney ハイズ / Hythe ドーバー/ Dover サンドイッチ/ Sandwich 王太后は毎年 Walmer Castleを訪問していました。 彼女は101歳の時でさえも、 恒例訪問をヘリコプターによって行っています。 特に王太后はガーデンの変わりぶりを楽しまれました。 Penelope Hobhouse / ペネロープホブハウス(1929 - ) が イングリッシュ•ヘリテッジから依頼され、 この庭をデザインしました。 そして、この庭は、王太后の95歳の誕生日に プレゼントされました。 |

| The Queen Mother was installed as Lord Warden of Cinque Ports in 1978, taking over the post from her friend Sir Robert Menzies (1894 - 1978). She visited Walmer Castle every year. Even when she was 101 years old, she made her annual trip by helicopter. Penelope Hobhouse (1929 - ) was commissioned by English Heritage, to design a garden here for the Queen Mother's 95th birthday. |
