Meeting
In 2019 I met Kanako Watanabe through Chizuka, the main staff of Galerie412 in Omotesando, Tokyo and I call her 'Kanako Chan'.

In fact, after Chizuka introduced me to Kanako Chan, I found out that she had visited my Exhibition in Galerie412 , 2017: ★.

It was a pleasant surprise.

Chizuka and Kanako Chan also helped me choose which of my works to exhibit in my exhibition in 2019 : .

I am grateful to Kanako Chan for both public and private life.

Works

Works
I don't use a flash for normal photographs, and I refrain from photographing with a flash, especially when photographing works.

I photographed like this here as well.

The actual works are much better, but my photographs are not good enough to reach the level of the works ... I'm sorry.

Anyway, I'll put them here.

The world expressed in gentle
and deep monotone is very attractive.
At this time, I knew that she would print 20 to 30 times
on both sides of Washi ; Japanese paper.
A long time ago, I remember being impressed
by the technique of coloring both sides
when using gold in Japanese painting and its effect.
I think it was in the Yamatane Museum of Art in Tokyo.

I have just begun to be interested in Washi as a material for my work.

Her work also uses Washi, and I am even more attracted to her work.

Fascinating Works
The mysterious space expands and makes me feel like
I am being sucked in.
No, it may be that I am already absorbed in the work
when I am attracted to it.
And also it seems that I am experiencing the state of a baby
who is half asleep in the womb.
Moreover, there are expectations and anxieties at the same time,
that make me feel like I am stepping into a deep forest.

Purchase
A. 作品ナンバー / Work Number
I (we) bought the work on the left.

Work Number
This purchased work was shown in Galerie412 in 2018,
"Kanako Watanabe Woodblock Print : Hatsunatsu Exhibition"
So, when I first saw the actual work of Kanako Chan, it was a work
I wanted.
About "Hatsunatsu Exhibition", below
However, on that day, before going to Galerie412, I had been to
"T-BOX" (Yaesu, Chūō -ku) and purchased one of Noriko Mesuda's works.
About Mesuda Noriko's Exhibition, below.
Therefore, I refrained from purchasing the work of Kanako Chan.

I thought if the same work was on display this time, I would buy it!,
I went there and realized my hope.

This time, I and my husband R were able to go to this exhibition, so to be exact, we bought it as a couple.

I heard from Kanako Chan that Chizuka had also purchased the same work and has 'work number 1'.

It makes me happy to know that someone close to me, and someone I respect in terms of art, was attracted to the same work.

Kanako Chan asked me which work number I would hope for, so
I chose 3.

3 is the strongest number in the Celtic world (Celtic culture).

Also, many of the 'legs' in my object work actually stand on only three legs.

One of my friends, an architect, G San explained me
"Three struts are the strongest."

So I chose 'work number 3'.

B. 自宅で / At Home

After the Exhibition, we visited Yoseidou Gallery to pick up her work on 5th of December.

And on the 27th, we went to pick up the picture book.

"Ken Kuroi Print Exhibition" was being held in the gallery at that time.

Ken Kuroi (1947 ~) is a great picture book maker, and he has more than 200 books.

I thought that creators would take their time making picture books, however, sometimes he seems to have produced one book a month.

Originally I would like to be an author and painter of picture books and entered the world of art, however, I haven't published even a single picture book yet.

For me, he is a person on a distance level.

Film, "At Eternity's Gate" - Tokyo, 26th of November 2019

Contents

Director and Leading Actor
New Van Gogh

Van Gogh's Year

Van Gogh's Year
Watching films at the cinema has become less popular.

This may not be just for me.

Suddenly, in October, I made watching the film, "Dilili in Parisat Yebisu Garden Cinema in Tokyo and then went to see another film at Yebisu Garden Cinema.
About  "Dilili in Paris" , below.

This time, it was "At Eternity's Gate" (2018) which is biographical drama film about the final years of painter Vincent van Gogh's life.

Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853 - 1890) was a post-Impressionist Dutch painter.

This year I had the opportunities to come into contact with Van Gogh and knew this film at the venue where I watched "Dilili in Paris".
"I have to go!"
I thought.

I looked at "Van Gogh Exhibition"at Tate Britainbelow, on 1st of August,
and on the 7th, I went to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

It didn't happen deliberately, in search of Van Gogh from beginning, but the connection began with the first decision to travel to the Netherlands, and 2019 was Van Gogh's year for me.

I found this flyer at Yebisu Garden Cinema in October.

Director and Leading Actor

Neo Expressionism

Go deep into an art work, there is Eternity

Back Cover of Programme

Director and Leading Actor
"At Eternity's Gate" is directed by Julian Schnabel and starring
Willem Dafoe.

Julian Schnabel is also the director of "Basquiat" (1996), and
I wondered if he was making art-related works.

This time, I found out that he is originally an artist of contemporary art (Neo Expressionism).

I want to see "Basquiat", but I haven't realized it yet.

Schnabel makes several films based on the real people who lived or live shocking lives.

Willem Dafoe is an actor who specializes in eccentric roles.
(Vincent Willem van Gogh and Willem Dafoe share the name, Willem, although the actor has no connection to Van Gogh or The Netherlands.)

I knew of him in "Platoon" (1986).

He appears on "Basquiat" and many others, and he is a long popular person (rare?).

I'm glad that somebody can be a character actor and be popular for a long time.

The last time I saw him, in the cinema, he is a villain in "Spider-Man" (2002) and I felt that he was like Jack Nicholson (1937 ~)'s Joker and I was afraid (Laugh).

This time  Willem Dafoe played a good-natured Van Gogh.

63-year-old Willem Dafoe played 37-year-old Van Gogh, and I didn't feel any discomfort.

Defoe performs well with a gentle personality and I feel the range of his acting ability.

I think that it's not just his acting, but perhaps the main point of the film, that he didn't portray Van Gogh as just a mentally ill person, and his death was not a suicide but a murder.

The film shows us how to see the world of genius with camera work.
[Director of Photography by Benoît Delhomme (1961 ~)]

Van Gogh's impression and beauty are transmitted from within him.

Yes, I'm sure this director wants to convey the feelings and appearance of the person to the audience.

There is no impression through the media filter, not observation from the outside ....

This is a biographical film through the director's filter, full of love for Van Gogh.

Although it is a biographical film, the director said
"The really important thing is not to draw accurately, but to make a good film."
(from the Programme )
(These words are a bit misleading, but I don't think they ignore the exact thing, they're the thoughts they rely on when making decisions.)

It may be closer to telling the truth rather than telling the facts.

New Van Gogh

[Lust for Life / 1956

(Stephen Naifeh / 1952 ~)
(Gregory White Smith / 1951 - 2014)

Programme
New Van Gogh
A part of a film about Van Gogh was shown at the Van Gogh Museum.

So, when I knew of  "At Eternity's Gate" at Yebisu Garden Place,
I made a slight mistake.

I thought  "At Eternity's Gate" was a revival screening of the film.

The film in Van Gogh Museum was "Lust for Life" [1956 / Director : Vincente Minnelli (1903-1986)].

Starring Kirk Douglas (1916 - 2020) (died in February of this year at the age of 103! I wish you all the best... currently I'm updating my blog almost a year late <Wry Smile>).

I haven't seen all of "Lust for Life", but it seems that the focus is on the process of mental illness, and I think Van Gogh in "Lust for Life" is a general understanding about Van Gogh.

In Tate's Van Gogh exhibition, I found out that while Van Gogh was in Britain, he was a teacher, art dealer, knew four languages, read books and collected prints, he was an intelligent man.

In the Van Gogh Museum, they denied Van Gogh was mentally ill.

The Museum explained he painted with his theory and experience.

Their explanation was very new, and it fitted with what I had understood in Tate Britain, so it made sense to me.

Van Gogh has long been thought to have committed suicide, but scientific evidence has shown that he was killed.

This view, advocated by the museum side, seems to be based on the theory advocated by Van Gogh's biographers
Stephen Naifeh (1952 ~) and Gregory White Smith (1951 - 2014).
(I haven't read their works.)

And this film is based on this speculation, depicting Van Gogh's end.

I watched this film after experiencing Van Gogh Exhibition in Tate Britain and the Van Gogh Museum.

While watching, I thought that Van Gogh had qualities similar to what is now called Asperger's syndrome.

People at that time (still?) have a 'fear' for someone different from them.
(Ignorance is cruel ...)

In this film, Van Gogh is drawn so that it would be difficult to judge when he is acting with his sensibility as an artist and when he is acting mentally ill.

At least I felt that way.

I felt that his being mentally ill was more like the mental state of a person who was pressurized, rather than his basic nature.

Even ordinary people come down if they are placed in an abnormal environment.

Nowadays, many people are confident that Van Gogh was not a madman.

Although he wasn't always in a normal state of mind ...... well, it may be that the people around him made Van Gogh do that ... the film feels like it's drawn that way.

In fact, it is clever to cast that Willem Dafoe, who usually plays an eccentric role, playing a gentle and good Van Gogh in everyday life.

Van Gogh died, however, the film fed my heart and was wonderful.

What is eternal ... I understand that it is the world of art.

When I passed an art university in Japan, I was studying with Akiyama teacher,
he said to me.
"This is not the end.
You are now just at the edge of the endless world of art.
There is a wide, wide world in front of you. "
I remembered his words.
(I don't think there is much to do with passing university and expanding the art world, and I understand that the teacher just wanted to convey to me the infinity of the art world.)
