2017年9月にベルギーの"ゲント現代美術館"： "Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst"  : "S.M.A.K." を訪ねた際に、"雲を測る男" [ ヤン・ファーブル  (1958 ~) を見ました。

そのとき、金沢21世紀美術館にも"雲を測る男"があるのを知り、ぜひ、金沢21世紀美術館を訪ねて、"雲を測る男"を見たいと思い、この日、実現したのです。

ファーブル作品は、痛々しい、もしくは肉体を露骨に表現するものが多いのですが、その中で、"雲を測る男"はもっとも詩的でロマンチックな表現になっていると思います。

私は、彼の作品の中で、この作品が一番好きです。

"雲を測る男" 

ヤン・ファーブル  (1958 ~) は『昆虫記』(1879 - 1907) の作者、 

アンリ・ファーブル / Jean-Henri Fabre (1823 - 1915）の曾孫 (ヒマゴ)です。

Jan Fabre (1958 ~) is the great-grandson Jean-Henri Fabre who

wrote "Souvenirs Entomologiques" ; 'insect notes' (1879 -1907).

At that time, I knew that there was also "The Man Who Measures the Clouds" at the '21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa and I made it on this day, 2nd of March, 2018,

Fabre works are often painful or express blatantly in the body, however, amongst them I think that "The Man Who Measures the Clouds" is the most poetic and romantic expression.

Among his works, I like this most.

2) 金沢 / Kanazawa
      A. 正面(東口)玄関前から

下の写真はカメラのズームを使用しているので、この大きさに見えますが、肉眼ではかなり小さいです。

Since the photograph, below was used by my camera's zoom, it looks like this size, although  it is quite small with the naked eyes.

後ろ姿がドラマティック。

正面玄関前からは後ろ姿しか見えません。
正面に対して美しくもない市役所のビルがあり、彼には気の毒です。

His back is dramatic.
We only can see his back from in front of the entrance. 
There is a local government building in front of him 
which is not beautiful for him and sorry to him.

平日にも関わらず、行列ができていたのに、驚きました。

どこかで大々的に展覧会の宣伝をしたいたのかしら？と思いつつ行列に加わり、チケットを購入後に受付係に、"雲を測る男" はどこから見られるかを聞きました。

「無料 (交流ゾーン) で見られますよ。いいんですか？」

と心配そうに聞いてくれました。

「展覧会も見ますから」

ほっとしたような表情になって、見られる場所を館内図 (下) の E  の上にを ● (ちょっと楕円？)で塗りつぶして、教えてくれました。

また、意外な場所として展示ゾーンから見える場所も教えてくれて、"雲を測る男"と撮影はしても良いと許可をくれました。

今回の展示だけなのか、いつもなのか、わかりませんが、展示ゾーンの撮影は許可されていませんでした。

ここだけでなく、全般に金沢の人は年齢に関係なく、親切でした。

金沢に住む友人Sちゃんも同意してくれました。

水色部分 : 展覧会ゾーンで有料。
無色の部分 : 交流ゾーンで無料。

Light blue part :  Exhibition Zone with charge.
Colorless part : Public Zone, free.

Despite being on a weekday, I was surprised that there was a queue.

'Did someone promote exhibitions somewhere?'

While I was thinking and joining the queue, after purchasing the ticket, I asked the receptionist, where I can see "The Man Who Measures the Clouds".

"You see it in the Public Zone, it is free. You bought the ticket, are you alright?"

She said anxiously.

"I also see the work in the exhibition, so alright"

She looked relieved and taught me where I can see the statue and she marked ● (slightly elliptical?) on  E  in Map, above.

And also she told me another place in the Exhibition Zone, she gave me permission to photograph to "the Man Measures the Clouds".

On that day visitors were not allowed to photograph in the Exhibition Zone, I do not know if this alway applies.

Not only here but overall, Kanazawa people are kind regardless of age.

My friend, S chan living in Kanazawa also agreed.

 B. 展示ゾーンから / From the Exhibition Zone

ガラス面の多い建物なので、その効果がさまざまな所で働いています。 
It is a building with many glass walls, so they affect works in various places.

この作品には興味深い話がありますので、ぜひ、下の説明を読んでください。

金沢21世紀美術館サイトより

"本作品は、『終身犯』（1961年 米国）という映画から着想を得て制作されました。

この映画は、監獄に入れられた主人公が独房で小鳥を飼い、鳥類学者となった実話に基づいています。

映画の終わりで研究の自由を剥奪された主人公が、「今後は何をして過ごすのか」と問われ、「雲でも測って過ごすさ」と答えましたが、作品のタイトルはその台詞に由来しています。

また、この作品は作家の身体を型どりしていますが、そこには、彼の兄の死を思い、制作されたという背景もあります。

人間の生と死、そして、自然科学と「雲を測る」という詩的な行為など、様々な要素を併せ持つ作品です。"

about "The Man Who Measures the Clouds"

"This work was inspired by Birdman of Alcatraz (1961, USA), a film based on the true story of a man who kept birds in his cell while imprisoned in solitary confinement and became an ornithologist. 

At the film’s end, when the man, who has been denied permission to continue his research, is asked about his future plans, he replies: “I am going to measure the clouds.”

 The artwork takes its title from this line. Although modeled after the artist himself, The Man Who Measures the Clouds also pays homage to his late twin brother. 

It is thus a work blending various elements—human life and death, natural science, and the poetic gesture of “measuring the clouds.”"

切ない気持ちになって、胸がきゅんとなるのは私だけでしょうか？


With the power of the camera, I can see his expression.
I feel sad, and is it only me who feels chest twinges?

デザインは美術館をデザインしたSANAA。

この椅子に座って、休憩しつつ、"雲を測る男" を見るのです。

While sitting in this chair, taking a break, I saw a "The Man Who Measures the Clouds".

'光の庭' と呼ばれる空間を挟んで"雲を測る男"が

正面に見られます。

We can see "The Man Who Measures the Clouds" across

 the space called 'the Garden of Light' or Court Yard.

雲は変化するから、彼は永遠に測りつづけるのです。
As the cloud changes, he will keep measuring eternally.
