初めてのバーベキュー  / First Barbecue

Rの弟夫妻、E&Bがバーベキューに招待してくれました。

彼らは私が英国に行くと、いつも招待してくれますが、庭でのバーベキューは初めてで、なおかつ、私にとっては、これが英国での初めてのバーベキューでした。

この日は、Rの 末妹のRuもアメリカから里帰りしていて、E&B宅に泊まっていましたので、5人でのバーベキューパーティになりました。

巻き寿司が前菜  / Makizushi : Rolled Sushi is Starter 

2年前に英国の家に彼らを招いた時、私が作った巻き寿司がとても好評でした。

料理上手なEがぱくぱく食べて自分の食べっぷりを

「恥ずかしくなっちゃうわ！」

と表現してくれ、私はぷっと吹き出しそうなり、そして嬉しかったのでした。

今夏、彼らのお茶会に参加している最中にバーベキューの招待を受けました。
そのとき、彼女に

「巻き寿司を持ってゆきましょうか？」

と聞いたら
Eが喜んでくれて、前菜として組み込んでくれました。

英国人にしたら、巻き寿司は、サラダ感覚なのですね。

Ruはアメリカで巻き寿司作りにトライしたことがあったけれど、
うまくいかなかったそうで、
「これは技術が必要よね」

と言うので、私はちょっとびっくり！

私は巻き寿司を作る時に、'技術' など意識したことがありませんでした。

基本、私は不器用で、包丁さばきも家族に心配されるくらいです。

巻き寿司は、一緒に住んでいた祖母が作ってくれ、
私はそばで見ていました。

彼女が亡くなったあと、だいぶたってから、料理の本を見ながら
巻き寿司を作りましたが、普通に作ることができました。

祖母の細かな所作が頭に残っていたのかもしれません。

First Barbecue

R's younger brother couple, E&B invited us for their barbecue.

When I visit Britain, they always invite us, though this was the first time for their barbecue,  as well as it was my first barbecue in the UK.

On that day R's youngest sister, Ru came back to her home country from USA and she stayed E&B house, so it was 5 people's party.

巻き寿司が前菜   /  Makizushi  : Rolled sushi is Starter 

When we invited them to our house in Britain two years ago, 
my rolled sushi was very popular.

E who is good at cooking, ate them well and described herself

"I am ashamed!

I was likely to burst out laughing and I was glad.

While we were in their tea party this summer, 
they asked us to come to a barbecue as well,
 I offered to her

"Shall I bring rolled sushi?"

“Your sushi? Oh! Yes!”

E gladly incorporated it as an appetizer.

British seems to feel rolled sushi is a salad.

Ru had tried making rolled sushi in the USA, she did not succeed,

"It requires skill"

she said, so I was a little surprised!

I had never been conscious of 'skill' 
when making rolled sushi.

Basically, I'm clumsy and my family worried about me 
when handling any kitchen knife.

When I was a child and my grandmother made rolled sushi, 
I was watching by her side.

Long after she died, I made rolled sushi while looking at a cooking book, 
I made it easily.

It may be that the delicate work of my grandmother remained in my head.

Eが最初に庭で紹介してくれたのは、ドラゴン達。
私がドラゴンが好きなのを彼女は私がドラゴンが好きなことを知っていたのです。

In their garden, first of all E introduced her dragons to me.
Because, she knew that I love dragons.

バーベキューの世話をするのは通常、'一家の主人'、男性の仕事です。

この日はもちろん、Rの弟のB！

Normally the master of the house looks after a barbecue, which is a man's job.

Of course, it was R's younger brother B on that day.

美味しそうに焼けてます！
B、どうもありがとう！

バーベキューグリルは、赤や黒はよく見ますが

鮮やかな青は珍しいように思います。

彼らの家に来るたびに思うのですが、彼らの家は小さな美術館のようです。

彼らのこだわりが感じられます。
私は注意深く選ばれた物で作り上げられた空間が好きです。

They Look Good!

I see often red or black barbecue grills,

though I think a blue one is unusual.

Every time I come to their house, their house looks like a small art museum.

I feel their elaborate selection and their commitment.
 I love the space which is made with careful selected things.

通常、私はソーセージをあまり食べませんが、
ここでは二つも食べてしまいました。

Normally I do not eat much sausage,
though here, I ate two! 

ばくばく食べております！ / I ate very well!

デザート
アルミホイル焼きしたバナナとホイップクリーム
美味しい組み合わせでした。

Desert 
Aluminum foil baked banana and whipped cream
The combination was delicious.

素敵な庭 
私には 'イングリッシュ・ガーデン' 風に感じられます。
私が思う、イングリッシュ・ガーデンは、多少ジャングルの雰囲気あり、自然さが残されています。
高低差も重要なポイントかもしれません。

Lovely Garden
I feel their garden is 'English Garden' style. 
I have thought that an 'English Garden' has a little 
of the atmosphere of a jungle which means naturalness is kept there. 
It might also be an important point that there are differences of elevation, too. 

私はフューシア(フクシア）が大好き！
彼らも好きな様でたくさんの種類のフューシアがありました。
全部のフューシアは撮影できませんでした。

I love Fuchsia!
They seem to like them too and they have many different types of Fuchsia.
I could not photographs them all.

この実は何かはわかりません....。

ここには、鑑賞用の植物だけでなく、

プラムやヘーゼルナッツなどの食用の植物もあります。
Eが作るジャムは絶品で、ジャムが苦手な私が彼女のジャムは好んで食べます。
この日もEのジャムを結構いただきました。

殻付きへーゼルナッツもいただきました。

Here, they have  edible plants such as plums and hazelnuts 
as well as plants for viewing.

The jam that E makes is excellent, I am not good at jam, I love her jam.

She gave me quite a lot of her Jam on that day too.

Moreover, I was given hazelnuts in shells.

庭での '締め' は強いお酒！
Our last taste in the garden was strong alcohol!

グラスも素敵 / Glasses are  lovely, too.
この後、部屋でしばらくくつろいで帰宅
(4人分なのは、Rは運転があるからです）

After that we relaxed in the room for a while and we came back home.
(The glasses are four, because R would drive.

美味しく、楽しい、1日でした。ありがとうございました！

また2年後に〜〜〜！

It was a delicious and enjoyable day. Thank you very much!
