八角形の楼門、コルトンズゲート/ Colton's Gate
中世のお城へ行くには、案内所(チケット売り場)から
丘を登って行き、このゲートの下を通ります。
このゲートは、13世紀初期に建てられ、
屋根の部分は15世紀に修復されています。

Octagonal gate-tower: Colton's Gate
When we go to the Medieval Castle,
we walk uphill from the information: ticket booth,
then we pass through this gate.
It was built in the early 13th century,
the upper was restored in the 15th century.

中世の城
現在ドーバー城と呼ばれるのは、
この中世の城があるからでしょう。
ユニオンジャック(英国旗)が、
誇らしく旗めいています.....でしょう？
その下にイングリッシュ•ヘリテッジ / English Heritage
の旗があります。

もとは征服王•ウィリアム1世が
1066年にここにお城を造りましたが、
その後ヘンリー2世 (1133 - 1189)(下の画像) と
その後継者が大幅に修復しました (1180 - 1250年代)。

Medieval Castle
Today, people call here 'Dover Castle',
because of this Medieval Castle.
The union jack is flying with pride, isn't it?
There is another flag below the national flag,
it is English Heritage.

In 1066, William the Conqueror made a castle here, 
later Henry Ⅱ  (1133 - 1189) (Above picture) and 
his successors developed to a grand scale (1180 - 1250s).

という感じがします。

城壁内
Inside the Walls 

いつものようにカフェへ
Go to Cafe as usual

お城 (Great Tower)の中
突然、小劇が始まりました。
観光客を劇に参加させます。
王様はもちろん Henry Ⅱを演じています。

In the Castle : Great Tower
They started a mini-play show suddenly.
They let tourists join their world.
Of course, this king plays as  Henry Ⅱ.

'ケルティックチェス'がある〜〜！
私は勝手に'ケルティックチェス'と呼びますが、
公式の名前は 'The Lewis Chessmen' 。
スコットランドのルイス島で発見されました。
　セイウチの牙とクジラの歯でできていて、
AD 1150 - 1200年頃のものと考えられています。
これはコピーで、本物(下の写真)は英国博物館にあります。

Celtic Chess Here~~!
I call them 'Celtic Chess' as I like,
although its public name is  'The Lewis Chessmen' .
There were found in the isle of Lewis in Scotland. 
They made of walrus ivory and whales' teeth, about AD 1150 - 1200.
This is a copy from the set in the British Museum (Below photograph).

兵士(騎士)の部屋
実は、このお城の歴史を通して、
殆どは兵士の宿舎、武器庫としてここは使用されて来たのでした。
王族、貴族は殆ど住居としては使用していませんでした。
なんとな〜く、ぶっきらぼうな雰囲気に感じたのは、
そういう訳だったのですね。

2007年にイングリッシュヘリテッジはここを
ヘンリー2世 がここを訪れた時の様子にセッティングしました。

Soldier (Knight) Room
Actually, throughout its history, this castle has been used
as a Garrison or store for weapons.
The royal family and aristocrats hadn't used here so much 
as a residence.
 I felt the atmosphere was somehow brusque, 
indeed, now I know the reason.

In 2007 English Heritage decided it would represent 
when Henry Ⅱ visited here.

右端の薄く見える職人さんは、映像で、
幽霊ではありませんから、ご安心ください。

Studio
On the right, you see a faint craftman, 
it is a picture, not a ghost, don't be worried.

海霧
Sea mist

英国海峡側を見ますが、殆ど見えません。
絵で確認。
灯台(Roman Pharos)と教会(St. Mary-in-Castro)は、
お城からすれば、海側にあります。

We look towards the English Channel seaside, 
although we cannot see much.
The picture shows us where things are.
We can see Roman Pharos and Church of St. Mary-in-Castro.
