とても狭いゲートで、体を横にずらして通りました。
石垣についている黄色の印を追って歩きます。

かなり自分の好きに生きてる私は印を見て歩くことに、ちょっとした嫌悪を感じました。
ですが、ウォーカーとして初心者なのも知っているし、パブリックフットパスは基本的には個人の敷地内を歩かせてもらうものなので、勝手にその道を離れて歩き回ってはいけないことも知っているので、素直に黄色のマークについて行きました。

Cambridge House ~ Reeth
This gate is very narrow, so we had to go through the gate sideways.
We followed yellow paint markers on stone walls.
I felt a little bit strange about this, because I usually live as I like.
However, I knew I am beginner as a walker and we should not walk around the area, because there are somebody's property, even though the sign says 'Public Footpath'.
Then I followed the yellow markers as we should.

| 石垣 下を見ると……。 フィールドを歩く前は、この石のでっぱりはなんだろうと疑問に思っていましたが、今は石垣を乗り越えるときに 使用する石段であることを知っています。 The wall View from the top to below……. before walking in the field I wondered what the stone projections are in the wall, although I now know that people use them to climb over the wall.  横を見ると……。
"ヘイドリアンウォー (Hadrian's Wall) : ハドリアヌスの長上"
を思い出します。
私達がそこに行ったとき、私は結構な距離を歩いた
と思っていましたが、今となってはあれは短い距離だった と思います。
小さい壁であろうと、大きな壁のヘイドリアンウォーであろうと、
その基本的な役割は同じであると思います。
羊も人間も壁に仕切られて好きには行き来できないのですね。
そのかわりに安全はある程度保証されます。
そしてその壁は永遠になくならないのでしょう。
View from the side……,
I remember Hadrian's Wall.
When we visited there, I thought we walked quite a long way, however, now I think it was a short walk.
I think the function of the walls is the same, whether it is (was?) small or big like the Hadrian's Wall.
Sheep and humans are given boundaries, we cannot get over
as we like, although we become safer.
The walls or the boundaries are there forever, they never go.

| ウサギ穴がたくさん！
写真には撮れませんでしたがうさぎも何匹か見ました。
こういう風景を見るとトールキンがホビットをウサギから連想し、その家が本に書かれているようなものになるのが
わかるような気がします。 Many rabbit burrows!
I could not catch a photograph of the rabbits,
although
I saw a few of them.
I look at the view, I feel that I understand that J.R.R Tolkien had imagination about 'Hobbit' coming from rabbits and the description of their houses in the story : "The Hobbit" .

I listened to the sound of trickling water and I saw this.
I find views like these enchanting.

| 道しるべ Guideposts |

| 道しるべ フットパスには道しるべがついています。 その近くにこんな矢印があったので Rに聞くと馬のためというか、 ライダー(騎手)のための道しるべだそうです。 こんなところ(急斜面ですべりやすく、狭いところ)まで馬でくるのかとびっくりもし、私は馬には乗れませんが、 上手な乗り手でなければこれないでしょうと推測しました。 Guideposts The footpath has some guideposts. I saw the arrow (second photograph), and I asked R what is this for? He said that it is for horses (their riders). I was quite surprised that horses can come here. The area is rough, stony, sometimes slippery, steep, and narrow. I do not ride horses, although I guess the rider should have high skill, shouldn't they? |

| ジェイコブがいる!? ウェールズのマーリンセンターで見た"ジェイコブ"に、 最後のフィールドで会ったと思いました……が、 この地方のデールの名前がついたスウェルデールタップという名前の羊でした。 Wow! "Jacob" is here!? 最後のゲートで、私達はとても小さくて、とても敏捷な動物を見ました。
その動物はゲートの右から現れて左の石垣の中へ入ったのです。
ねずみかとも思いましたが、尾に毛がありましたので、普通のねずみとは違うと思いました。
体が延びきった状態で20cmほどでした。
B&Bに戻ったあとでB&Bのスタッフのレズ(Les)から、それはイタチ(正確にはイイズナ)であることを教えてもらいました。
レズはイタチが自分よりも大きなウサギを襲い、射止め、ウサギを引きずって行くのを見たことがあるとも言っていました。
その動物はゲートの右から現れて左の石垣の中へ入ったのです。

We saw a very small, quite quick animal at the last gate.
It was running from the right wall into the left wall.
I thought a mouse at first, although its tail has hair, so it was not a common mouse.
The length was about 7 inches.
After returning to our B&B, Les told us it was a weasel.
(In fact it is a Least Weasel.)
And also he said that he has seen a weasel hunt a rabbit which was bigger then the weasel and the weasel dragged the rabbit.
I was surprised by the animal which is tiny and fierce.
It was running from the right wall into the left wall.

Later I researched about it and found that is the smallest of all of the Carnivora species, is found in Japan too, and is in
the Red List, marked LC; Least Concern.
I was amazed that I saw the weasel, it was not in a Zoo.
Moreover, the Least Weasel is more special than other weasels, so
I was astonished myself.
In addition, I am pleased to have had this experience, even though it was a small thing for other people. It was special for me.

C: リース(村) / Reeth
リースは村ですが閉塞感を感じませんでした。
それは村の中心が大きな広場になってるからだと思います。
今回の旅の中でこのような村を見ませんでした。
Reeth
Even though it is a village I did not feel hemmed in.
I think because the centre of the Village is a large open space.
So far I did not see villages like this.
2) ドライブ/ Driving

リースの観光名所で鉱山の廃墟のポストカードを見つけました。
私は廃墟にも魅力を感じるのです。
車なら近くにあるというので、B&Bに一度戻り、サンドラからアドバイスをもらいました。
ポストカードにある鉱山跡は、徒歩のみでしか近づけないし、かなりの距離もあるということでした。
彼女は、徒歩のみでしかいけれいけれども歩く距離が短い他の鉱山跡を紹介してくれましたし、もしもそこに行かなくても、その付近は
十分に景色が楽しめるというので、とにかく出かけました。
私は廃墟にも魅力を感じるのです。

Driving
I found a post-card which shows us the ruins of a mine.
I feel the ruins are attractive too. We returned to our B&B, then we had some information about the ruins from Sandra, which is that it is only possible to get there by walking quite a long walk.
So she introduced us to another old mine and mill which still need some walking to get there.
Moreover, she said the surrounding views are enjoyable, even if we do not walk there.
So anyway, we went out for a drive.

今日、ドライブの前に歩いたところの景色。
ヨークシャーデールは、古くから、少なくとも英国における
ローマ時代(約2,000年前)から、 錫(lead)の鉱山、石灰岩(limestone)の採石場として有名でした。 Yorkshire Dales were known for lead mines and limestone quarries, starting at least from the Roman period. |

現在は殆どのところでその行為は行われていません。
ですが、グラシントン付近では石を運ぶトラックを見ました。
まだ行われているところがあるのかもしれません。
ナショナルパークに指定されているのにおかしいな〜と思いましたが、指定される以前の契約が続行されているのかもしれません。
ニッダデール (Nidderdale) はナショナルパークではないので、
その地域にあるのかもしれません。
現在の風景、風貌は、自然のものと採掘されたり切り取られたり
したものが混在しています。
私にはどこまでが自然でどこまでが人工の形なのか区別がつきませんが、ヨークシャーデールは、とても興味深く、
他では見られない風景があります。
Yorkshire Dales
Today most of the mines, mills and quarries do not work,
although we saw a lorry with stone around Grassington.
They might still be working a quarry somewhere.
I wonder how they could do it, even though these areas are
National Park.
However, they might have permission for a quarry from the government or council before there became National Park.
Nidderdale is not in the National Park,
so maybe that area has some quarries.
Up to the present, the views of the Yorkshire Dales have been
a mix of natural and manmade, like a mine or quarry.
I can not always tell which parts are natural or manmade,
although the landscape of the Yorkshire Dales is very interesting and I haven't seen it in other places. |

古い鉱山跡

私はこの写真を撮影しただけで、 徒歩で近くまでは行きませんでした。
疲れていましたし、その疲れをおして鉱山の廃墟を見に行く気力はありませんでした。
もしもこの鉱山がアーサー王やマーリンに関するものだったら
歩いていったかもしれません。
