1) 移動日、マラムからリースへ 
     Moving day, Malham to Reeth,5th

この日はヨークシャーデールの南側マラムから北部のリースへ移動
しました。

ウォーフデイル(グラシントン)、ウェンズケイデール(レイバン)、
スエールデール(リース)を通る道のり。

これらはナショナルパークの中にあります。

グラシントンでは雑事をすまし、レイバンで休憩し、晩ご飯の食料品を調達しました。


Moving day, Malham to Reeth, 5th

We moved from Malham : the South of the Yorkshire Dales, to Reeth : the North of the Dales.  

Our route had Wharfedale, Wensleydale and Swaledale. 

The dales are in a National Park. 

We did small jobs in Grassington and bought some food for our dinner or supper in Leyburn.

Our car and the rider and horse were on the same road, 
in the beautiful countryside. 
Rider has a lovely smile, she looks happy.

Grassington
この町の手前の川の景色がきれいでした。
Just before the town, there is a beautiful river and riverside.

家が景色に馴染んでいる。
The houses match the view.

Kettlewell

ケトラエル村 / Kettlewellは道路から見ただけですが、
魅力的に感じました。

I only looked at Kettlewell from a road, 
although I felt it was attractive for me.

ケトラエル村をすぎると駐車場があり、

そこから(イルクニ/ ILKNEY) 湖水地方のウィンダミアまで

歩いて行くコースが説明されていました。

After Kettlewell, there is a car park. 

This shows "The Dales Way" and explains 
how to get from here (ILKNEY) to Windermere on foot.

昼食をとったカフェ

We had lunch at this cafe

たんぽぽと牛蒡の花の飲みもの

コーラのような味。

英国には牛蒡(ゴボウ)は存在していないと思っていました。

英国では牛蒡の花は飲み物として伝統的に飲まれていたのですね。

びっくりしました。

日本では根を野菜として食べますが、

英国では根は食べられていません。

Dandelion and Burdock / Burdock : GOBO in Japanese

It tasted like a cola for me.
I thought GOBO : burdock is not in Britain, although the flower has been used for soft drink, and it has been traditional.
I was surprised. In Japan we eat the root as a vegetable,
however, people do not eat the root in Britain.

C: レイバン/ Leyburn ~ リース/ Reeth

レンヴァンの町からリース村の道はムーアを思わせる風景でした。

その中には英国陸軍の射的練習場と思われるものもあり、
もの珍しいなあと思いつつ見ました。

リース村の中心地から来るまで１分(？)のところにある
'ケンブリッジハウス' に３泊しました。


Leyburn ~ Reeth

The landscape from Leyburn to Reeth is like a moor. 

On the way, there looked like a shooting range or something on a larger scale for the British Army. 

I looked at them curiously.

It takes one minute (?) from Reeth to 'Cambridge House' : our B&B, by car. We stayed three nights.

2) Reeth

A: ケンブリッジハウス/ Cambridge House

部屋、バスルームは清潔、ふかふかの２人分のバスローヴも
用意されていました。
ここのタオルもベッドもとても心地良かったです。
フレッシュミルク(ここにはカートンのミルクはありません)、
ミネラルウォーターもサービスされます。
部屋には小さな小さな冷蔵庫があり、
それらや他の食品も少しなら保存できます。
ですが、ちょっぴり冷蔵庫の音は気になりました。

The room and bathroom are perfectly clean.
The bathrobes and the towels are beautifully soft and thick.
There is a comfortable bed.
We were given a jug of fresh milk (no carton milk here)
and two bottles of mineral water.
There is a mini fridge, so we can keep them and some other food.
Just one drawback, we felt a bit uncomfortable
 with the sound of the fridge.

部屋からの眺めも素敵でした。
庭には鳥の餌箱がたくさんあり、
私達は部屋からもサンルームからも
バードウォッチングを楽しみました。
キジやキツツキや他の野鳥も多く見ました。
池には鯉もいます。

We could see beautiful views from our room.
They feed the birds in the garden,
so we could enjoy bird-watching in our room or from the sun room.
We saw pheasants, woodpecker and other wild birds.
There are carp in the pond.

ランドレディのサンドラの手作りの
美味しいスコーンが食べられます。

でも毎日ではありません。

ここのプラムジャムはとても美味しい。

日頃ジャムをあまり食べない私がたくさん食べました。

アフタヌーンティは毎日無料サービスされます(午後５時半まで)。

These are Sandra's Scones, and they are lovely,
although it is not every day.
Usually I do not have any jam, but her plum jam is very delicious,
so I could not stop eating it this time.
We can have afternoon tea (before 5:30pm) every day.

朝食のフルーツサラダ

朝食はかなりの選択肢があり、

私はエギークランペット(eggy crumpets)が好きでした。

サンドラがジェイミー・オミリヴァーのレシピ
であることを教えてくれました。

彼は英国でTVの番組でとても人気がある料理人です。

私は彼のお鍋をいくつか日本で使っています。

ダイニングルームには大きなテーブルがあり、

朝食はそのテーブルを囲んで泊まり客みんなで食べます。

楽しかった!

Fruit salad, breakfast

There are a few selections for breakfast. 

Sandra told me it comes from Jamie Oliver's recipe. 

He is a very popular TV chef. 

I have his brand of pans in Japan.

Customers eat together at a big table in the dining room.
We enjoyed listening and meeting.

B: 散策 他 /Walking and Others

私達が滞在中にそこで会った人たちは、すべて本格的なウォーカーでした。

荷物はウォーキングの会社が運んでくれて、コースもその人たちにあったものを組み立ててくれると聞きました。

なので、すべての荷物を背負って歩く事もなく、毎日にシャワーや
バスが使用でき、暖かな朝食もとれ、時々はランチも用意してもらえ、衣服も靴も乾いたものを使用できるようなウォーキングです。

なんて素晴らしいやり方なんでしょう！

もしも私の足に故障がなかったら、その方法を使用して歩いてみたいと思いました。

残念ながら、私達は歩くのが得意ではありません。

ですが、B&Bのレズ(Les)は私達にアドバイスしてくれ、サンドラは
私達にあったこの地域周辺のウォーキングコースを紹介してくれて、そのマップも貸してくれました。

それは到着した翌日(6日に)実行し、楽しみました。

また私達はここからドラムボーイの話が残るリッチモンドの町まで行きましたし、アケンガイルデール(Arkengarrthdale)のドライヴもしました。

また、ここで会ったウォーカーの方達から、ウォーカーの中では世界的に有名な
"Coast to Coast Walk / コースト・トゥ ・コースト・ウォーク：
沿岸から沿岸への道"
というコースがあるのを聞きました。

このコースは湖水地方、ヨークシャー・デールズ、ノース・ヨーク・ムーアズの
３つのナショナルパークを歩き、アイルランド海のセントビーズ (St.Bees) から北海のロビン・フッズ・ベイ (Robin Hood's Bay)へと横切るのです。

オーストラリアからわざわざこのコースのために来ていた父娘もいました。

ノース・ヨーク・ムーアズもロビン・フッズ・ベイも私が行きたいと思っているところですが、今回の旅行にはいろいろな都合上組み込めませんでした。
いつか行きたい！！！

その他にも、私が日本に居るうちにリサーチをしていた
"世界で最も有名な獣医、ジェームズエリオット先生"
のコースを歩いているグループにも会いました。

あとで知ったことですが、"Coast to Coast Walk"を最初に作り出したのは、湖水地方のウォーキングマップをいくつも作り出し、本も出版したアルフレッド ワーインライト/ Alfred Wainwrightであったのです。

彼は日本ではあまり知られていませんが、今日、英国ではかなりの人に知られています。

その理由のひとつとして"Coast to Coast Walk"が知られるようになったことがあげられます。

私には、彼のマップは湖水地方をロケーションにした
アーサー•ランサムの『つばめ号とアマゾン号』のシリーズのマップと重なります。

いろいろな事が自分の興味ある事とリンクして、嬉しくなりました。

ここで過ごした日々はこの旅行の中でもっとも素晴らしい経験のひとつで、B&Bでの時間も非常に安らげるものでした。

Walking and Others

We met other guests, in the B&B, who were serious walkers. 

We heard about their walking holidays. 

A walking company carries their bags from ’A’ B&B to ’B’ B&B, 
so they do not have to carry all their things or bags, and they get a shower or bath, beds, breakfasts, sometimes lunch and they can wear dry clothes and boots. 

It is fantastic!

 If my leg were good, I would do this. 

Unfortunately we are not good at walking, although Les suggested that Sandra could find a walk around there for us and lend us the map. 

We enjoyed the walk the next day, 6th. 

And also we went to Richmond, the town with the Drummer Boy story, and drove around Arkengarthdale.

And also, I heard about the "Coast to Coast Walk", before I did not know anything about it. 

The route is very popular for walkers from all over the world. 

The walk includes three National Parks : the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors, they cross from the Irish Sea ; St.Bees to the North Sea; Robin Hoods Bay. 

A father and his daughter came from Australia for the "Coast to Coast Walk".

I would like to visit the North York Moors and Robin Hood's Bay, too. 

I could not make them in this trip.

Later I knew that Alfred Wainwright made the walk who made many walks in the Lake District and published many books about the walks. 

In Japan, he is not popular although he is well known in Britain, today. 

It is one of reasons that "Coast to Coast Walk" became so popular.

I think his maps are similar to the maps of "Swallows and Amazons" series which Arthur Ransome wrote.

Reeth

In addition, I met a group who walked the "James Herriot Way". 

I researched about him in Japan. 

I remember a website says, 'He is the most famous vet all over the world'.

Therefore I became glad that a few things were linked with my interests.

The three days we spent here, were one of our most wonderful experiences on this trip.
