私がヨークシャーデール、リッチモンド (ロンドンのリッチモンドではありません) に来た理由は、二つ。
ひとつはウィリアムメイン (1928-2010) が『地に消える少年鼓手』を書いたから、ふたつめは私(達)はヨークシャーデールを訪ねたことがなかったからです。
物語の舞台はヨークシャーデール、メインはこの地に残る
’ドラマーボーイ(少年鼓手)の伝説'
と
'アーサー王の伝説'
をもとに話を書きました。
私はこの伝説が実際ヨークシャーデールのどこにあるのかを知りたかったし、ヨークシャーデールも見たいと思いました。
アーサー王の伝説は英国には多数あるので今回は、
'ドラマーボーイ(少年鼓手)の伝説'
に焦点をあてました。
I came to Richmond (it was not Richmond in London), or the Yorkshire Dales, because William Mayne (1928-2010) wrote "Earthfasts" 1966 based on a local legend, and I or we had haven't been to the Yorkshire Dales.
I knew that the location is somewhere in the Yorkshire Dales, and the author used the 'Drummer Boy Legend' and the 'King Arthur Legend' setting his book here in the Dales.
I would find the place of the 'Drummer Boy Legend' (King Arthurs' are everywhere in Britain or even Ireland), and I would visit the Dales.

日本で出版した本と原本のイラストレイターは、
デヴィッド・ナイト/ David Knight。
作者の意向で、原本は表紙のみしか絵は使用されていませんが、日本語版は本文にペン画のさし絵が使用されています。
これは英国と日本の文化が違うので、日本の子供達の理解を助けるため、作者も同意しイラストレイターも喜んで描いたそうです。
リッチモンドでは'ドラマーボーイの伝説'は有名ですが、メインや彼の本はあまり知られていないようでした。
1994年にBBCでこの話がTVシリーズになったのにもかかわらず知られていないようで、そのときはちょっとがっかり！
In Richmond, the 'Drummer Boy legend' is quite well known, although Wiliam Mayne and his story do not seem to be well known, even though the BBC broadcast the story series in 1994.

18世紀の終わり頃、何人かの兵士がリッチモンド城天守閣付近に
地下道を見つけました。
そこは彼らにとっては狭く、中へはいれません。
そこで兵士達は少年鼓手隊の中から背丈の低い少年を一人選びました。
少年は地下道を太鼓を打ちながら進むように言われ、彼はそうしました。
太鼓の音は地上によく聞こえ、兵士達はその音について、地上を進みました。
音は城を離れマーケットプレスを横切り、フレンチゲート通りの方角へすすみ、スエール川のそばを通りながらイーズビの森に入りました。
兵士達は森の中を進みましたが、あと半マイルほどでイーズビ修道院という所で音は途絶えてしまいました。
その後、その少年を見た者は誰一人なく、地下道の入り口も不明の
ままです。

At the end of 18th century, some soldiers found an opening to a tunnel under the keep of the castle.

ヨークシャーのリッチモンドとロンドンのリッチモンドとは関係があったを知りました。
それはリッチモンド城周辺を治めていたリッチモンド伯爵はロンドンのリッチモンドを含む他の地域も統治していました。
またこの伯爵の名前がロンドンリッチモンドの名前になったのです。
I knew Yorkshire Richmond and London Richmond were connected : the Earl of Richmond held land around Richmond castle and other parts of the country, including in London Richmond.
And also his name was given London Richmond.
お城は11世紀から作られ始め、14世紀の終わり周辺に不使用になりましたが、ターナーに描かれたり、観光産業が盛んになり、1800年初期に修復されました。
The castle build up the 11 century and the 14th century fallen out of use, although Turner painted it, the rise of tourism led to repairs in the early 1800s.

I researched about William Mayne again after the trip.
Then I knew some information that he had worked as a childrens' book author for over 50 years and won many awards, although he was jailed for indecent assault attacks, and was imprisoned for two and a half years in 2004 after admitting his guilt.

I understand that the last line in the article says that this attack was not the only one but also he had made attacks for a long time.
That is too bad, and very sad for the victims who were girls.
I think the girls have very hard feeling and painful life.

Illustration
The pictures in the book, in Japanese and in English were illustrated by David Knight.
For the English edition the author only wanted the cover illustration.
The Japanese edition has a few drawings.
Because Japanese culture and British culture are different, so it is quite hard for Japanese children to understand the story, the illustrations help their understanding.
The author agreed it and the Illustrator was pleased about this.

リッチモンドでは'ドラマーボーイの伝説'は有名ですが、メインや彼の本はあまり知られていないようでした。

18世紀の終わり頃、何人かの兵士がリッチモンド城天守閣付近に
地下道を見つけました。

✠The Drummer Boy Legend✠
At the end of 18th century, some soldiers found an opening to a tunnel under the keep of the castle.
They could not go in the tunnel, because the tunnel was too small for them.
Then they selected one of the small regimental drummer boys.
The boy was asked to move forward in the tunnel while he was beating his drum.
The soldiers listened to the beat clearly, above ground they could follow the sounds and the boy's way.
The sounds guided them away from the castle, across the market place in the direction of Frenchgate, and beside the River Swale towards Easby Wood.
They entered the wood and half a mile from the Abbey, the beat stopped.
After then nobody has seen the boy and also they could not find the entrance to the tunnel.
Then they selected one of the small regimental drummer boys.
The boy was asked to move forward in the tunnel while he was beating his drum.

I much prefer this tunnel to the tunnel under the ground.
I felt that we could go to a different space or
world through the green tunnel.
Here, I was thinking about Earthfasts, the drummer boy lost in the tunnel under the ground, then he went to a different world for him.

ショッピングモールになっています。
映画館、カフェ、レストラン他にもいろいろ……。
でも私達はリッチモンド城を見たかったので、
それには十分な時間がなくて寄りませんでした。
This building was Richmond Station, it was reconstructed,
now it is a shopping mall.
There are cinemas, cafe, and restaurant, etc.
We did not visit there, because we wanted to go to Richmond Castle,
so we did not have time for 'Richmond Station'.

私は旅行後に再び彼のリサーチをしました。
そこでわかったのは、彼は児童文学の作家として50年以上も活躍、数々の賞も獲得しながら、2004年に性的暴行罪が決定し2年半服役しました。
2004年５月にガーディアン紙に暴行事件の記事が載っていました。
