A: スイスシャーレー？ / Swiss chalet ?
英国のB&Bは花柄やレースの甘いインテリアが多い印象が私はあります。
ですが、このB&Bはすっきりとした内装で、清潔感がありました。
具体的にも清潔でした。
きれいな山小屋に泊まっている気分がしたのは、この内装だけでなく、場所が丘の上で部屋が３階であったからかもしれません。
そして斜めの天井や三角の窓は、一層私を山小屋気分にさせ、スイスの清潔なイメージとともにスイスシャーレを思いおこさせました。
私達はここで２泊しました。
ケンダルの中心地からも近く (Rが運転を休めることもあって)、
部屋の居心地は良く、椅子やテーブルもある空間的な余裕もあり、寛ぐことができました。

Swiss chalet ?
I have the impression that the interiors of most British B&Bs are sweet, as if their world is flower patterns or lacework, although this B&B's interior is simple and has clean lines.
Here it is clean and easy to see that it is clean.

I felt I stayed in a lovely lodge, perhaps not only because of the interior but also the B&B is on a hill and our room was on the second floor.
And also the window and sloping ceilings remind me of a Swiss chalet.

We stayed two nights here. It is close to centre of Kendal ( R could be free from driving), I felt our room is comfortable, and the room has two arm chairs and a table, so we could be relaxed.
B: 心意気 / Their Spirit
オーナーのカップルさんは親切で面倒見が良かったです。
まじめで、一生懸命な方達である印象でした。
このB&Bについてもオーナーさんについてもよく知りませんが、
以前経営されていた方から引き継がれて日が浅いのかしら？
と思ってしまいました。
これはただの推測です。
Their Spirit
The owner couple are kind and helpful.
I felt they are earnest and hard workers.
I do not know about them and the B&B, although I thought it hasn't been long since they took over the B&B from the former owners.
It is just my guessing.

A : 何故ケンダルに? / Why I came to Kendal?
私達は2007年2月に湖水地方に来ています。
コニストンに3宿泊し、ウィンダミア、アンブルサイト、
ケズウィック、グラスミア、バタミアを見てまわり、
ケンダルにも来ました。
その旅は楽しいものでしたし、卒論から卒業制作へ移行する切り替えにもなりました。
また、その時の、冬の写真を利用した作品も作る事ができました。
なので、あのとき、冬の湖水地方を経験できたことはとても有意義でした。
けれども、私が行きたかったケンダルにあるアーサーランサムの博物館 (正確には湖水地方生活博物館の中に’アーサーランサムの部屋’がある) は閉まっていました。
今回のケンダル訪問の目的はアーサーランサムのための、その美術館です。
そこはアーサーランサムクラブ英国本部にもなっていました。

因に日本のアーサーランサムクラブの発足は本国英国よりも早いのです。
わ〜〜い！
でも私は'会' とか 'クラブ'系は苦手なので入会はしませんけれど……。

Why I came to Kendal?
We visited the Lake District Feb.2007 and stayed near Coniston three nights.
We went to Windemere, Ambleside, Grasmere, Keswick, Buttermere and Kendal too.
I enjoyed them, I was switching to work for Degree Show from graduation thesis and I have got photographs of winter season for my work, so I was really pleased to visit in winter.
Although I wanted to visit Arthur Ransome Museum, (to be exact 'Arthur Ransome Room' in the Museum of Lakeland Life ) which was closed at that time.
Then the main purpose of this visit to Kendal was the Museum for 'Arthur Ransome Room'.
There is also the 'Arthur Ransome Society' in Britain. By the way, the inauguration of the 'Arthur Ransome Society' in Japan was earlier than in Britain.
Hurrah!

However, I have not joined them, because I am weak in 'society' or 'club' or 'group' and so on.

彼の主な所蔵書などがこの博物館に寄贈されました。

書棚には、私が持っている『ツバメ号とアマゾン号/シリーズ全12巻日本語版(岩波書店)』も入っていて、感激！
他の国のそのシリーズも 、他の本ももちろん書棚にはありました。

『ウィスキーガロア』
が有名でコメディ映画にもなっています。
そして彼は自分の経験から『秘密情報部員』("ハヤカワミステリマガジン257号: 特集スパイ小説入門”/早川書房、1977)
他の国のそのシリーズも 、他の本ももちろん書棚にはありました。
例えば、『中国の妖精物語 /ピットマン』
『ホビットの冒険 / トールキン』
『私の人世と時間 / コンプトン・マッケンジー』など。
私がちょっと興味がわいたのはマッケンジーです。
マッケンジーはウィスキーを満載し難破した船の話を書いた
『ウィスキーガロア』
が有名でコメディ映画にもなっています。
そして彼は自分の経験から『秘密情報部員』("ハヤカワミステリマガジン257号: 特集スパイ小説入門”/早川書房、1977)
という作品も書いていています。

ランサムはスパイであったのではないかと言われていて、また言うまでもなくランサムは船やボートの世界を愛していたし、その彼の本棚にマッケンジーの本があるのがおもしろいと思いました。
いつか彼の本も読んでみたいし、映画も観てみたいと思います。

'Arthur Ransome Room'
After Ransome died in 1967, his wife, Evgenia donated many of his personal things, including his drawing of the "Swallows and Amazons" series, and a large part of his personal book collection to Museum.
While I looked at them in the room,
I enjoyed the world of Ransome in my own imagination.
I found the Japanese editions of the "Swallows and Amazons" series in the book shelf there.
I have the same book series, so I was impressed and somehow I am glad!

The bookshelf has book series from other countries, and others.
For example, "Chinese Fairy Tales" (Pitman),
"The Hobbit" (Tolkien),
"My Life and Times ; (Compton Mackenzie)".
I became interested in Compton Mackenzie.
He is best known for "Whisky Galore", it is a popular story of a wrecked ship which has whisky, and was made into a comedy film.
He also wrote "Water on the Brain"; about the Secret Service based on his experiences.

I am interested in Mackenzie's book on the shelf, because apparently Ransome was a spy and needless to say, he loved about the world of ships and boats.
In the 'Arthur Ransome Room', I took a few photographs, although
I can not put all of them here, because a member of staff gave me permission to take photographs, as long as I only use them for my memory or share with my friends.

C: ケンダル城 / Kendal Castle
もとはこの図のようだったケンダル城は今は下の写真の状態。
私は遺跡が好きですが、ここはお城が少々かわいそうな気持ちになってしまいました。
もしかすると、私が今まで訪ねた遺跡には何かしらのパワーがあり、それが私を興奮させたのです。
でもケンダル城は大人しくもあり、健康的でもあり、いつでも来てね！という雰囲気でもあり……野生の動物が飼いならされてすっかり従順になってしまったような感じです。
そこはとても平和な空気が流れていました。

I love ruins although I felt a little bit sorry for this castle.
Perhaps I have visited ruins which have some special power and they excite me.
However, I felt this castle is obedient and easy to visit, or healthy.......as if a wild animal has become meek.
There was so peaceful.

英国では有名なクッカー(オーヴン、ガス台が一緒になったもの)や
料理器具、道具のお店です。
高級品ですが、使いずらいといわれているようです。
でも、素敵なクッカーですよね。
日本にまだお店がありません。
なので、自分用とお土産にふきんを買いました。

It is famous shop for cooker and cooking goods.
Apparently they are good quality, but they are difficult to use.

There are no Aga shops in Japan, so I bought some tea towels for myself and as souvenirs.
The lovely cooker does not fit my suitcase.

カフェもあるようですが、今回は外から見ただけでした。
かわいいお店ですね。

| ファラーズ、ストリクランドゲート通り
1819年開業の老舗の紅茶と珈琲 (アラビカ豆の自家焙煎)
のお店です。
B＆Bの部屋に用意されていたのが、
ファラーズの“Lakeland Special Tea”で、 私はこの紅茶を気に入っていました。
けれども他にもお土産を買っていたので今回は見送り……。
私達は2007年にここのカフェに来て冬の紅茶のブレンドなど
いくつかの種類の紅茶を買っています。 Farrer's in Stricklandgate
They are old, established in 1819, and have sold tea and coffee (Arabica beans) which are roasted in their own factory.
Our B&B have “Lakeland Special Tea” from this shop, I like the tea, although we did not go there this time,
because we had bought a few souvenirs so far.
When we visited Kendal in 2007, so we went into their cafe,
and bought winter tea and others.  |
