友人、はっこちゃんの展覧会があった新宿から、ギャラリー412のある表参道へ移動。

この日、ギャラリーでは、ケンジ・ベルトー・ スズキ展が開催されていました。
ケンジ・ベルトー・ スズキ (1958 -)氏は、パリで生まれ、現在はフランス、アラスの美術学校で彫刻を教えています。
DMが届いた時から、見てみたいな〜と思いました。
DM作品には、ユーモラスさがあり、形が洗練され、アイディアがあり、好意を持ちました。

Kenji Bertheau Suzuki Exhibition was held in the Gallery on this day.
Kenji Bertheau Suzuki (1958 -) was born in Paris and currently teaches sculpture in the art school in Arras, France.
From the time DM arrived, I would like to see ~, because the DM work has humour, sophistication, and ideas.

| DMに使用された作品は入り口のすぐそばに展示されていましたが、 逆の方向を向いていました。 これは、'立体'のおもしろさを感じてもらうためでしょうか？ The work used for DM was displayed near the entrance, although it was turned in the opposite direction. Is this to make it more interesting for visitors who had already seen the DM? |

意外であったのは、人物のドローイング作品が展示されていたことです。
What surprised me is that the portrait drawings were on display. |
人物描写は、学生時代にデッサンとしてほとんどの美大生は経験すると思います。
私同様、多くの美大生が人物デッサン(人物描写)を卒業する形で、作品傾向がより自分の世界、自分の形を作っていくのだと思います。
スズキ氏は既に、独自の形(スタイル)を確立されていて、それが実物の人間形態から離れているものですから、実在の人物に近いドローイングが展示されていたので、私は少なからず驚きました。
I think that most art students have practiced drawing portraits.
It is because it is thought that this is the basis of art for a person engaged in art or pictures.
I liked painting watercolour portraits in my school days.
Generally I think, that like me, many art students graduate from drawings portraits and tend to develop our own forms and style of work.
Suzuki has already established his own style and it is quite separate from the real human form, and because his drawings were close to real people, I was quite surprised.

しばらく作品を見ている間に
スズキ氏の立体は人物なので、
その路線上に人物のドローイングがあり、
かけ離れた行為ではないと思い始めました。
While I looked at the work for a while, I began my thinking that
Suzuki's three‐dimensional
works are people,
'portrayal
of a person' on that line and it was not an act far apart.

スズキ氏にとって、'人物のドローイング'は、デッサンでなく、絵画なのですね。
それを強調するように、ギャラリーの真ん中に展示される人物の口は、
ラフな赤い彩色がされています。
For Suzuki, 'Person's drawing' is not a drawing, it is a painting.
To emphasize that, the mouth of the person displayed
in the middle of the gallery is roughly coloured red.

| 人物の平面作品は、立体作品の基礎というよりも、 次へのステージの一つなのかもしれません。 |
少ない描線と陰影でその人物の性格を表現しようとしている試みを感じます。
人物の立体作品が簡略された表現を用いるのと同様の傾向です。
私の好みは、どろどろねちねち描くタイプよりも、こちらの傾向です。
なので、スズキ氏の作品は好きです。
彼のドローイングは、その人の良い面を描き出していて、作家の明るさが感じられます。

| His flat-surface work of a person may be his latest stage, the outcome, rather than the foundation of his three-dimensional work. |
I feel that he has attempted to express the character of each person with few drawn lines and shadows.
He uses a similarly pared-down approach in his three‐dimensional expressions of people, as in his drawings.
My taste leans towards simplification, rather than 'muddy' or 'persistent' elaboration.
So I like Suzuki's works.
His drawn portraits can express the good side of that person and I feel the artist's brightness.
