サヴァーンの起源はケルト語でサブリナ / sabrinn-âと考えられています。
また、ケルト神話の中で、サブリナはセヴァーン川の女神です。
セヴァーン川の女神は、サブリナとして、クオリー公園の中の彫像や、地図の中の絵になっています。
そしてクルーズの船の名前もサブリナ、その会社名が
「川の女神サブリナ/ Sabrina goddess of the River」
です。

Goddess of the River Severn
River Severn is the longest river in Britain and it flows from Wales to the Bristol Channel.
They say the name, Severn comes from a Celtic original name sabrinn-â.
And also Sabrina is the goddess of the river in Celtic mythology.
Her statue is in Quarry Park and her pictures are on maps as Sabrina, the Goddess of the River Severn.
In addition, the name of the Cruise boat is Sabrina and its company's name is "Sabrina goddess of the River".

カドフェルのシリーズでも多くの場面でセヴァーン川は出てきます。
セヴァーン川に最も密接している登場人物は
'死人舟 (シビトブネ) のマドッグ ' /
'Madog of the Dead Boat' 。
死人舟なんて通称がついていますが、通常彼は渡し舟の船頭です。
セヴァーン川のことをよく知っているので、川での探し物が上手で、時々死体も見つけもするので、そんな通称がついています。
また、カドフェル同様ウェールズ人。
なので、英国人
(イングランド人)
から蔑称的につけられてしまったのかもしれません？
深読みしすぎでしょうか？
Cadfael Chronicles
In
Cadfael's Chronicles, the River Severn appears a few times.
The
character, 'Madog of the Dead Boat', is closely related with the river.
He was given 'Dead Boat' as his common name, normally he is a ferryman.
He
knows the river well, can find things which other people cannot in the river and
sometimes he finds dead bodies too, hence his given common name.
And
also he is Welsh, like Cadfael.
The name might have been given by the English as a derogatory name?
In my view, the
author, Ellis Peters (1913
-1995) would include the name to show society at the period.
Moreover the author set, Cadfael who is Welsh, as the main character, because of her thoughts about Czech, she loved Czech, or Czech culture which had been suppressed for a long time.
Am I reading too much into the works?
