1) 聖ジャイルズ施療院 /  'The Lazar House'

聖ジャイルズ教会 / St.Giles Churchは、物語の中では、'聖ジャイルズ施療院' / 
'The Lazar House'があります。聖ジャイルズ  (650頃-710頃)

第3巻『修道士の頭巾』 [1980,  エリス ・ピーターズ (1913 -1995)]で、
修道士カドフェルの助手をしていた修道士マーク (18または19歳) が、

第5巻『死を呼ぶ婚礼』The Leper of Saint Giles [1981,  エリス ・ピーターズ]

では'聖ジャイルズ施療院'で奉仕しています。

そこではハンセン病患者の世話をしているので、隔離された場所にあります。

カドフェルは、彼のハーブガーデンから作った薬草を定期的に、修道院からそこへ届けています。

ガイドブックで聖ジャイルズ 教会を見つけたので、そこへ足を運んでみました。

 'The Lazar House'

St.Giles Church in the stories has 'The Lazar House' which is a hospital for leprosy Patients.
Saint Giles (c.650 -c.710)

The place is isolated from the society.

Brother Mark (18 or 19 years old) is Cadfael's assistant in part 3, "The Monk's Hood" [1980,  Ellis Peters (1913 -1995)], who by part 5, "The Leper of Saint Giles" [1981,  Ellis Peters volunteers in 'The Lazar House'.

Cadfael makes medicinal herbs  from his herb garden in the Abbey and takes them there regularly.

I found St. Giles Church in Cadfael's guide book and I visited.

2) 道のり / On the Way

ヒル伯爵記念碑 (40.7m)
彫像はヴィンセント・ヒル１世(1772 - 1842)
カドフェルの時代にはなかった柱ですね。

Lord Hill's Column (40.7m)
The Statue is Rowland Hill, 1st Viscount Hill (1772 - 1842).
It was not there in Cadfael's time, was it?

トラファルガー広場のネルソン記念碑と同様、ライオンが柱の元にいます。
There are lions under the column like by Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square.

マイル標 / マイルスーン
通常はロンドンからの距離だけですがこの標は複数の表示があります。

Mile Stone
Normally a mile stone shows distances just from London,
although this shows the distances from a few places.

学生時代を過ごしたバースの表示を見つけて、こちらの面も嬉しくなって撮影。

I found Bath on the stone which where I was a student and lived,
so that I became glad and photographed this side, too.

結構な距離を歩いてきて、'聖ジャイルズ 道路'の表示を見つけました。
聖ジャイルズ教会が近くにあることを確信して安心!

I walked quite a long way and found this sign.
I felt the church was close and felt relieved!

3) 聖ジャイルズ教会  /  St.Giles Church

上手にこの場を物語に組み入れているな〜と思います。

I thought about the distance from the Abbey to here
and I think Ellis Peters integrated this place into the stories well.

正門
正門はほぼ南をむています。教会内には入れないようでした。

 Main Entrance
The main entrance faces to almost South.
It looks as though we cannot go into the building.

The corner to the back

物語のなかでは、丘に囲まれているような印象でしたが、

ここはそうでもないようです。

My impression in the stories is that here is surrounded by hills,

in fact here does not seem to be.

I returned the same way as I came.
