Lake Towada
Lake Towada, satellite photograph With a surface area of 61.1 km², Towada is Japan's 12th largest lake. The maximum water depth is 326.8m, which is the third deepest in Japan. It lies 400 m (1,800 ft) above sea level. Even though it's so deep, the bottom is still higher than sea level. It is said to be a double caldera lake and unusual but I do not know the structure of the 'double caldera'. 画像は下記より / This from below ★ Map in Japanese (Sorry) 画像は下記より / This from below ★ |
Lake Towada
Lake Towada has been a famous tourist destination for a long time, and one of my young teenage friends and a neighbour in her 80s said that they visited Lake Towada on their school trips.
This Tōhoku Trip of I and my husband R included the Lake and we went to the Lake for the first time.
When we got on the sightseeing boat of Lake Towada, I remembered
Lake Ashi in Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture.
(Next section about the sightseeing boat)
In Lake Ashi, we got on a sightseeing boat (Pirate ship), and the theme of the trip was autumn colours, the same as R's birthday trip.
The day trip to Hakone, below.
Both Lake Towada and Lake Ashi are crater lakes.
Besides the autumn colours and the sightseeing boats, I may have felt something from the terrain.
Well, maybe I just remembered the commonality of 'lake in the mountains' and 'Pleasure boat' ...
The mountainous area with Lake Ashi is located in the caldera of Hakone volcano.
Lake Towada is in a group of volcanoes with the same caldera as Hakkōda Mountains located to the north, and is the largest caldera lake in Honshū, about 8.7 times larger than Lake Ashi.
In addition, the maximum depth is 326.8m, Lake Ashi is 43.5m ... It's a surprising difference in depth.
I don't know the exact thing, but the impression from the lakes
I visited is that Japan has many caldera lakes created by eruptions, and Britain has many 'Glacial Lakes' created by glaciers.
Japan has many volcanoes, many earthquakes, and many mountains ....
On the east bank, there is the Oirase River, which is the only outflow from Lake Towada, it flows through the Oirase Gorge.
Our tour went to Hakkoda Ropeway and Oirase Gorge in front of Lake Towada, below.
Origin of Name
It is said that there are many place names derived
It is said that there are many place names derived
from the Ainu language in Tōhoku.
[It seems to be described in a book,
"Study of Ainu language place names in Tōhoku"
(Soufukan / 1993) by Hidezo Yamada (1899 -1992),
but I have not read it]
Lake Towada is one of them.
The Ainu word "to" means a lake, "watara" is a cliff, and "to watara" means a rocky lake.
After that, it changed to "Towatari", and it seems that the Kanji characters of Lake Towada : 十和田湖 were used.
By the way, Lake Tazawa is also derived from the Ainu language (Tazawako; a raised hill at the top of the circle).

Is it odorous or mysterious?
Is it odorous or mysterious?
In fact, there is another theory behind the words of Lake Towada, related to Christianity, below.
"十" of Lake Towada : 十和田湖 is "Cross"
"和" is + : "Plus"
"田" is 'surrounding the cross : ♱'.
In addition, there is Shingō Village in Aomori Prefecture, where there are legends of the grave of Jesus Christ : ★, festivals, customs and ruins that are said to be related to Judaism.
After I researched, there seemed to be a scheming person, so called Kyomaro Takeuchi (c.1875 - 1965) who made things up.
However, it is now treated as tourist attractions (strange festival and so on) in the village, so I wonder if this is now alright.
Basically Japanese religiousness is a mixture of Gods and Buddha, and every God is a God, and has Fudo / 風土 : a culture of respecting each other.
I like myths and legends, and I also like to visit places related with them...
But I don't want to visit the supposed grave and museum of Christ in the village.
However, I would like to see a strange festival in the village.
