2) 鹿を追って / Chasing the Deer

ロッジ・パークはグロスター州のシャーボーン村の近くに、
鹿のコース場の特別観覧席場 (グランドスタンド /grandstand )
として、1630年代に建設されました。
Lodge Park was built in the 1630's as a grandstand for deer coursing
near the village of Sherborne in Gloucestershire.
噴水としての機能は失われているように見えます。
The function as a fountain seems to be lost.
それでも水性の植物は花を咲かせています。
トチカガミの一種でしょうか？
Still, the water-based plants are in bloom.
Is it a kind of Hydrocharis?

正面門を見る
門の向こうの道が鹿のコースになっていました。 鹿のレースではなく、実際は犬のレースでした。 2匹の犬が一頭の鹿を追うことで早く走り、そのレースを人々が観戦し どちらの犬が勝つかを賭けました。 なんだか...ちょっと...人間とは残酷だと思ってしまいます。 これはセンチメンタルな感情でしょうか？ Look at Front Gate The road behind the gate was a deer course. It was actually a dog race, not a deer race. Two dogs ran faster as they followed the deer, and people watched the race and betted which dog would win. Somehow ... a little ... I think people are cruel. Is this sentimental? |

| あのバルコニーや屋上からレースを観戦したのですね〜。 People looked at races from that balcony and the roof.

ここには、イングランドで唯一現存する17世紀の鹿のコースと
グランドスタンド (上の建物) があるのです。

17世紀の、この広さの景観が現在も保たれていることに驚かされます。
日本では難しいことです。 英国のこういう点は素晴らしい....ナショナル・トラスト、さすが！
Oil Painting
This was painted looking towards the building.
I am amazed that the landscape of this size in the 17th century is still preserved.
It's difficult in Japan. That's great in Britain ... indeed, the National Trust. |
1630年代初頭、ジョン ・ 'クランプ'・ダットン / John 'Crump' Dutton は
シャーボーン地域に鹿のコースを作りました。 ダットン卿は、チャールズ・ブリッジマン / Charles Bridgeman (1690 -1738)に、
嬉しかったです。
"ハハー" は、羊よけをしつつ風景を保持する方法。 ロッジ・パークには、"ハハー"は、ないと思います。

B. ミステリアス・パイ / Mysterious Pie

スズメのパイ
入り口近くに、スズメのパイ / 'Sparrow Pie' の模型 (サンプル) が 展示してありました。 'Sparrow Pie'？何？スズメを使用したパイ？そして何故ここに？ リサーチすると、英国では昔、一般に食べたそうです。 安価なタンパク質源でした。 "スズメのパイおよびスズメのプディングは人を
超自然的に賢くすると信じられるようになり、
19世紀頃には、「スズメのパイを食べた」という意味は、 特に刺激を受けた、または賢明な発言をしたことを指す比喩"
として用いられたそうです。
でも英国人のRは、スズメのパイもこの比喩も知りませんでした。 そして、なぜここに展示されていたのかは、今もってミステリー！ ちなみに日本では、スズメの脳みそを食べさせる店があると聞きました。 かつての知人で、これを好みにしていた人を思い出しました。 や〜、人の好みは色々で、食文化の違いは面白いです。
Sparrow Pie
A model of 'Sparrow Pie' was displayed near the entrance.
"Sparrow Pie"? What? A pie using sparrows? And why is this here?
I researched about the pie (★).
It seems that people used to eat it in Britain in the past.
It was an inexpensive protein source.
Sparrow pies and sparrow puddings had been believed
to make a person preternaturally sharp.
According to 'Haggard Hawks' : ★,
“By the nineteenth century, saying that someone had 'dined on sparrow pie'
was a phrase used to point out that
they had made a particularly inspired or intelligent remark”
But a British, R, didn't know of “Sparrow Pie” or this metaphor.
And why it was displayed here is still a mystery!
By the way, I heard that there are some restaurants in Japan
where you can eat sparrow brains.
I remember a former acquaintance who loved it.
There are people with various tastes,
and the differences in food cultures are interesting. |

客間 / Great Room 大きな暖炉が裕福さを象徴しています。 The large fireplace symbolizes wealth.  7代目男爵チャールズ・ダットン卿が1982年に亡くなった後、 家と不動産がナショナル・トラストに遺贈されました。 家の状態が悪かったので、ナショナル・トラストによって 元の状態に修復されました。 各肖像画の詳細はここに→★ After the death of Sir Charles Dutton, the seventh Baron, in 1982, the house and the estate were bequeathed to the National Trust. | 鹿のレースが想像できますか？ 門の向こうがコースなら、あまり見えなかったのではないかと思います。 人々は楽しんだのでしょうか？ Can you imagine a deer race? I think they didn't see much if the course was beyond the gate. Did people enjoy it? |

| バルコニーと屋上での見学のために、ナショナルトラストのスタッフの方から 渡される資料です。 They are the material handed out by the staff of the National Trust for a tour on the balcony and the roof.   |

と推測ばかりです(苦笑)。

この後、ノースリーチ / Northleachの観光を予定していました。
私達は、ノースリーチ には行きましたが、
観光場所やカフェは終了時間を迎えていました。
町は、ちらっと見ただけでも、可愛らしく、
期待するコッツオルズの風景がありました。

After Lodge Park, we were planning to visit Northleach.
We went to Northleach but the tourist spots and cafes were closing.
At first glance, the town was pretty and
had the scenery of the Cotswolds that I expected.
Unfortunately we went to Bath without getting out of the car.
In Bath, we took a look around the university that I attended.

バースの宿泊所の "Contemporary Newly Built Cottage" は、バースの中心地から少し離れていました。
バースの街へは、20日と22日の夕方、23日の昼間に行きました。

| フリージングヒル レーンを走る車から この先で、コッツウォルズ・ウエイと交差します。 この道は、北からバースに帰るときによく利用しました。 なので、懐かしい景色です。 From our car driving on Freezing Hill Lane At this point, we cross the Cotswold Way. We used this road a lot when returning to Bath from the north. So it's a nostalgic view for me. |
Bath
The "Contemporary Newly Built Cottage" was our Bath's accommodation which was a bit far from the centre of Bath.
We visited the centre of Bath on the evening of the 20th and 22nd, and daytime of the 23rd.
I will post about Bath in later sections, including 'revisiting Bath Spa University' on this day.

I was sick on the 21st, so we took a break in the accommodation for one day.
"Contemporary Newly Built Cottage" was a good place to stay so we could relax.
To my regret, I wasn't feeling well so I didn't take any photograph of this accommodation.
