Rietveld Schröder House was designed by a Dutch architect and furniture designer,
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888 - 1964) and is a good example of architecture of De Stijl which refers to an art movement : Neoplasticism.

I will write about the different buildings by Rietveld nearby the house, the house's surroundings and the museum shop.

シュレーダー邸が竣工した1924年当時は高架ではありませんでした。
シュレーダー邸からは、リーフェルトとトゥルースが気に入っていた干拓地の景色が見えましたが
この道路がそれを遮 (サエギ) ってしまいました。
The road was not elevated when the Schröder House was completed in 1924.
From the house they could see a view of the reclaimed land that Rietveld and Truus liked, but this road blocked it.
シュレーダー邸、及び、その周辺の変遷が遮音壁 (シャオンヘキ)に表示されています。
The transition of Schröder House and its surroundings is displayed on the noise barrier.

道路が高架になったのは、ユトリレヒトが繁栄したからでした。
人口が増え、干拓地を住居地にし、中心地と住宅地を結ぶ道路の拡張です。
シュレーダー邸の前に広がる干拓地も住宅地に変わってゆくのでした。

高架下の壁にはリーフェルトの椅子とグレーのグラデーションが
タイルで表現されています。
シュレーダー邸の景色を台無しにした、罪滅ぼしのように私には感じられます。
この高架下を抜けて左へ向かうとリーフェルトとトゥルースが
デザインした建物があります。
The underpass walls are decorated with tiles showing Rietveld chairs
and gray gradations.
It felt to me as if in atonement
for spoiling the surrounding scenery around the Schröder House.
Passing under this viaduct and heading to the left,
there is a building designed by Rietveld and Truus.

"セントラル博物館 の別館扱いです。

The road was elevated due to the prosperity of Utrecht.
It was an expansion of the road connecting the central area and the residential area, with the population increasing and making the polder land residential areas.
The reclaimed land that spreads out in front of the Schröder House was also transformed into a residential area.

2) 新しい建物 / New Buildings
リーフェルトとトゥルースは、家の前に広がる干拓地に他の家々がたつ前に、自分達好みの建物がある方が良いと考えました。
その気持ちはよくわかります。
1931年に彼らのデザインによる4戸の連棟住ができ、1935年にはアパートもできました。
これらの建物は、"オランダにおいてNieuwe Bouwen (現代機能建築) 運動の最たる例" [カタログ、p49] になりました。
けれども、のちに、環状道路が高架になり、シュレーダー邸は道路から見下ろされることになりました。
リーフェルトは家を取り壊そうとしますが、トゥルースはそれに反対しました。
そのおかげで現在も私達はシュレーダー邸を見ることができます。
この時の二人の意見の相違に、二人の人生への、仕事への思いの違いがかなり見えると私は思います。
檜舞台で、次から次から建築の仕事をしてゆくリーフェルトは、この家が無くなっても痛手は少ないでしょう。
'次がある' と彼は自信を持っていたでしょう。
けれども、トゥルースは、主に彼をサポートすることでしか仕事に関われないし、この家を失っては彼との絆も脆(モロ)いものとなってしまったでしょう。
時代は、女性が一人で仕事をやってゆくにはとても難しかったでしょう。
自分の名前が残るこの家を失っては、彼女の仕事としてのキャリアがなくなるに等しかったのではないかと思います。
彼女にとってこの家の大切さは、リーフェルトの比ではなかったことでしょう。
この家は彼女が亡くなるまで、彼女を楽しませ、満足させました。
リーフェルトとも彼が亡くなるまでこの家で一緒に暮らせたのです。
ですが、後年、彼女は下のように語りました。
「そして別のことも、多すぎたけれど、やってみたかった。
つまりこのような家に住むのは、考えられると思うけれど、住まねばならないのね。
...そして私はまた...もっと自分を伸ばしたかった、けれどそうしなかったの。
多分身動きが取れなくなったのね。
それでも幾らかは進歩があったと思うわ。」

この家は、彼女をここに縛り付け、飛び立たせることをさせなかったのです。
大切で、素敵なものでも躍進するためには、手放すことが必須なのかもしれません。

New Buildings
Rietveld and Truus thought it would be better to have their own building in front of the other houses in the polder in front of them.
I can understand that feeling.
In 1931, they designed a row of four houses, and in 1935 they also had an apartment building.
These buildings have become "one of the best examples of the Nieuwe Bouwen (modern functional architecture) movement in the Netherlands" [catalog, p49].
However, later, the ring road was elevated, and Schröder House was overlooked from the road.
Rietveld would try to demolish the house, but Truus refused his idea.
Thanks to that, we can still see the Schröder House.
I think that the difference in opinion between the two people at this time can be seen in the difference in their feelings for lives and works.
Rietveld, who continued to work on different constructions one after another, would not have suffered much if this house disappeared.
He would have been confident that 'There is the next!'
However, Truus was only involved in his work primarily by supporting him, and losing her home would have made his bond fragile.
In those days, it would have been very difficult for a woman to work alone.
I think that if this house, with her name on it, were to have gone, it would have been as if she had lost her career in business.
For her, the importance of this house was probably not Rietveld's ratio.
This house entertained and pleased her until she died.
She could live together with him in this house until he died.
But in later years she said:
"And ...that I had also wanted to do something that was too much.
I mean, to live in such a house as you think you must live...
And I also didn't...I wanted to develop myself further, but I didn't.
I think I got bogged down, but I do believe I made some progress"

This house tied her up here and didn't let her fly away.
It may be essential to let go in order to make a leap forward even if something important and wonderful.

バルト・ファン・デル・レックもピート・モンドリアン (1872 -1944) もデ・ステイルのメンバーでした。
Bart van der Leck and Piet Mondrian were members of De Stijl.

このお店で買ったのは日本語版と英語版のカタログだけでした。

There are also paper model kits of the chair,
but obviously they seem to me that the hurdle is high,
so I ignored them (Wry Smile).

セントラル博物館とシュレーダー邸は徒歩圏内ではありますが、
近いとも言えません。
The Centraal Museum and Schröder House are within walking distance,
but not close to each other.
セントラル博物館へ
私と夫のRはシュレーダー邸の後に、徒歩でセントラル博物館に向かいました。
途中で、”Wilhelminapark / ヴィルヘルミナパーク” 内のレストランで
ランチをとりました。
なかなか素敵なレストランでした。
'プリンス・ヘンドリックラーン' 通りをまっすぐ進むと
ヴィルヘルミナパークに自ずと、入ってゆきます(青い点線)。
次のセクションではランチについてです。
To Centraal Museum
I and my husband R walked to the Central Museum after the Schroeder House.
On the way, we had our lunch in a restaurant in “Wilhelminapark”.
It was a lovely restaurant.
When you go straight on' ''Prins Hendriklaan' Street,
you will enter “Wilhelminapark”(Blue dotted line).
The next section is about lunch.
