1) リートフェルトとブルーナ / Rietveld and Bruna
ユトレヒトには、 "セントラル博物館 / Centraal Museum" があり、その真向かいに、別館として、"ミッフィー博物館 / Miffy Museum"があります。
ディック・ブルーナのアトリエは、セントラル博物館内に再現されています。
(実際のオーナーは、リートフェルト・シュレーダー邸財団です）

Rietveld and Bruna
I and my husband R had stayed in Utrecht for a week.
Utrecht has the "Centraal Museum" and directly opposite it is the annex "Miffy Museum".
Miffy is also well-known in Japan and her creator, Dick Bruna (1927 - 2017) who was born in Utrecht.
Dick Bruna's studio is reproduced in the Centraal Museum.
Another annex is Rietveld Schröder House, though it is away from the Centraal Museum.
(The real owner is Rietveld Schröder House Foundation.)
We booked both the "Miffy Museum" and the "Rietveld Schröder House" visit times by Internet.
We visited the "Miffy Museum" on 6th of August and on the 11th we went to "Rietveld Schröder House" .

"Rietveld Schröder House" was desigined by a Dutch architect and furniture designer, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888 - 1964) for a widow, Truus Schröder-Schräder (1889–1985) and her three children.
Both Rietveld and Bruna were from Utrecht, knew each other and Bruna visited the House.
Rietveld also visited Bruna's publishing party.
Both were influenced by De Stijl which refers to an art movement : Neoplasticism and
the Rietveld Schröder House is a good example of De Stijl architecture.

"The House" was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

2) 建物 / Building
A. 最寄りのバス停へ / To Closest Bus Stop"シュレーダー邸"はユトレヒトの中心地から多少離れていたので、バスを利用しました。
最寄りのバス停を乗り過ごし、終点まで行ってしまい、そこからまたバスで折り返し、最寄りのバス停で降りました。
いつも迷ったり、間違ったりするので今回もそれを見越して早めに出発していたので、予約時間には、余裕を持って到着。

To Closest Bus Stop
The Rietveld Schröder House was a bit far from the centre, so we took a bus.
We missed the nearest bus stop and went to the end, from where we returned by bus and got off at the nearest bus stop.
We were always lost or wrong, so we departed early in anticipation of this, so we arrived at the reserved time with plenty of time.

B. 外から / From Outside
受付を済ませて、予約時間まで家を外から見ました。
After checking with the reception, we looked at the House from the outside until the reservation time.

スタッフさんは自転車で通勤しているのですね。 自転車のある風景はオランダらしいな〜と思うようになりました。

二人の協力によって
依頼人のトゥルースも設計者のリートフェルトも家を建てるにあたって、
それぞれが土地を探しました。 二人が探し当てた土地は偶然にも同じ、この場所でした。
家を建てる時に、トゥルースのたくさんのアイディは、
リートフェルトによって具体化されました。
残念ながらその内容は書面として残されていません。
With Cooperation of Two
The client, Truus, and the designer, Rietveld, each sought land to build the house.
The land they found was coincidentally the same, this place.
When building the House, many of Truus's ideas were embodied by Rietveld.
Unfortunately, the detail has not been retained in writing.

ピート・モンドリアン (1872 -1944) の絵のようだとは聞いていましたが、
本当にそのまま彼の絵という印象です。

I've heard that it looks like a painting
by Piet Mondrian (1872 -1944), and my impression is
'Yes indeed, here is his painting'.

青いベンチ
この青いベンチは屋外ですが、バルコニー下にあることで屋内に
座っているように感じるように作られました。
このような中間的スペースが五感を刺激すると言われています。
このアイディアは日本の縁側と似ています。
Blue Bench
This blue bench is outdoors, but it was made to feel like sitting inside
by being under a balcony.
It is said that such an intermediate space stimulates the five senses.
This idea is similar to Engawa in Japan.
According to Wiki about Engawa,
"In Japanese architecture, an engawa (縁側 or 掾側) or en (縁) is
an edging strip of non-tatami-matted flooring, usually wood or bamboo.
The en(gawa)s may run around the rooms, on the outside of the building,
in which case they resembles a porch or sunroom.
Usually, the en is outside the translucent paper shōji,
but inside the amado (雨戸) storm shutters (when they are not packed away)"

It seems to say something like

is written in Dutch (?)

3) リートフェルトとトゥルース / Rietveld and Truus

トゥルースの子供達は1936年前後に巣立ちましたが、彼女は亡くなるまで、この家に住みました。
リートフェルトは1924年から1933年まで1階に設計事務所を持っていました。
1957年、彼の妻が亡くなった後、この家に移り、トゥルースと一緒に住みました。
彼もこの家で亡くなるのです。
彼の方が早く逝くので、トゥルースが彼を看取ったのだと思います。
彼らは仕事上のパートナーだけでなく、人生のパートナーでもあったのですね。

Rietveld and Truus
Truus's children left around 1936, but she lived there until she died.
Rietveld had his design office on the ground floor from 1924 to 1933.
After his wife died in 1957, he moved to this house and lived with Truus.
He also died in this house.
I think Truus took care of him because he died earlier.
They were not only business partners, but also life partners, weren't they?

リートフェルトは椅子をデザインするときでさえも、空間を意識しました。
彼は椅子をオブジェと捉えていたように思います。
なので、座り心地はあまり良くないかもしれません?
こういう傾向はデザイン重視の場合、ありがちかと思います。
トゥルースは、前衛芸術 (アバンギャルド) やデ・ステイルに多大に影響されていましたし、インテリアデザイナーになりたいとも思っていました。
なので、使い心地よりも、彼女の好みが優先されたのではないかと推測します。
もちろん、全ての使い心地が悪いのではなく、合理的に考えられたところはたくさんこの家にはありますが、最終的には彼女とリートフェルトの美的感覚やアイディアが優先されたと思います。
結局、二人の好みが同じ方向を向いていたことがこの家を素晴らしいものにしたのだと私は思います。

他はマットな表面の加工がされています。
こんな凝った加工がされているなんて驚き！

According to Book, p.16' by Ida van Zijl,
" 'Rietveld wasn't too concerned about the materials...
The architect's real material is space...
Space needs to be delineated clearly inside, but also outside...
He did so beautifully here.'
These are the words of Truus Schröder, explaining what made the Rietveld Schröder House so special in her view, almost sixty years after it was built."
Rietveld was conscious of space, even when designing chairs.
I think he captured a chair as an object.
So, sitting comfort may not be so good?
I think this tendency is more common when design is important.
Truus was heavily influenced by Avant-garde art and De Stijl, and she wanted to be an interior designer.
So I guess that her preference was given priority over comfort.
In this house, of course, not everything is uncomfortable, there are plenty of things that can be thought of as rational, but I think that ultimately aesthetics and ideas of her and Rietveld took precedence over rationality or comfort.
In the end, I think that the tastes of the two were in the same direction, which made this house wonderful.
