別府温泉 (ベップオンセン) は、大分県別府市にあり、源泉数、湧出量ともに日本一を誇ります。(世界一はアメリカ合衆国のイエローストーン国立公園、別府は2番目です)

別府温泉 は、歴史が違う8カ所の温泉郷 (下記) を中心に分布していて、これらを総称して "別府八湯 "(ベップハットウ) とも呼びます。

Beppu Onsen is a group of hot springs in the city of Beppu, Ōita Prefecture and is the largest hot spring resort in Japan with the largest number of separate springs.

(The largest is the Yellowstone National Park in the United States, Beppu is second)

Beppu Onsen is divided into eight major hot spring areas known as "Beppu Hatto", below.

1) 別府温泉  / Beppu Onsen

2) 浜脇 (ハマワキ) 温泉 / Hamawaki Onsen

3) 観海寺 (カンカイジ) 温泉 /Kankaiji Onsen

4) 堀田 (ホリタ) 温泉 / Horita Onsen

5) 明礬 (ミョウバン) 温泉 / Myoban Onsen

6) 鉄輪 (カンナワ) 温泉 / Kannawa Onsen

7) 柴石(シバセキ) 温泉 /Shibaseki Onsen

B. 鉄輪温泉 / Kannawa Onsen

私達は鉄輪温泉 (カンナワオンセン)にあるホテル風月HAMMOND に泊まりました。

別館では温泉アミューズメントもありました。

けれでも、体調を崩しはじめていた私は、一度だけ大浴場を利用しただけだたので、
残念...。

『開湯伝説 (カイトウセンセツ)』 : ★

"鉄輪温泉は、一遍上人 (イッペンショウニン/ 1239 - 1289) が
鎌倉時代 (1185頃 - 1333) に遊行 (ユギョウ) の途中で訪れ、地獄地帯であったこの地を火男火売神社 (ホノオホノメンジャジンジャ) の祭神の導きで 鎮めました。

今でも一遍が開いたとされる蒸し湯跡があります。"

一遍上人 は地獄の火を良い方向へ変えて、温泉にしたのですね。

一遍聖絵（イッペンヒジリエ)、第7巻 四条釈迦堂

一遍聖絵は、浄土宗の一つ、時宗 (ジシュウ) を興した

開祖一遍（遊行上人）を描いた絵巻。国宝。

東京国立博物館所蔵。

Illustrated Biography of the Priest Ippen： Volume 7 ( Ippen shōnin eden).

IppenShōnin (1239 -1289) was a Japanese Buddhist itinerant preacher (hijiri) who founded the Ji-shū  branch of Pure Land Buddhism.

This is part of the handscroll located at the Tokyo National Museum in Tokyo.

The scroll has been designated as a National Treasure of Japan.

Kannawa Onsen

We stayed in 'Hotel Fugetsu HAMMOND' in Kannawa Onsen : Kannawa Hot Spring Resort , Beppu.

The hotel has a Spa Amusement annex with many types of springs, many types of playful relaxation.

However, I was coming down with a cold, so I only once went in a large hotel hot spring spa,

that was too bad.

『Legend of opening of a hot spring』

"When Ippen Shōnin :  the Priest Ippen visited here as a trainee and for missionary work, in the Kamakura Period (c.1185 - 1333), here were 'infernal' areas in which the Priest pacified with the help of the God of Fire.

He made hot spring : Mushi-yu here and it still is here."

The Priest Ippen changed the 'Fire of Hell' to good ; hot springs, didn't he?

I selected Japanese Breakfast and a cup of English tea.
On the left, Mentaiko ; the marinated roe of Pollock and
 Cod which is a common ingredient in Japanese cuisine.

D. 景色 / Views

日の出 / Sunrise

鉄輪温泉の景観は、国の重要文化的景観に指定されています。
けむりは、もちろん湯けむりですよ。The scene of Kannawa Onsen is designated as an Important Cultural Landscape.
The smoke is the steam of a hot spring, of course.

2) 海地獄 / Umi Jigoku

海地獄は、別府の地獄として国の名勝に指定されています。

The hot spring Hells of Beppu are a nationally-designated "Place of Scenic Beauty" in the onsen town of Beppu, Ōita, Japan.

The "Hells" are for viewing rather than bathing.

熱帯性睡蓮の池 / The Pond of Tropical Water Lily

熱帯性睡蓮
池の中に温泉の湯が流れるパイプがあり、睡蓮の花が
5月から11上旬まで咲いているそうです。
ちなみに蓮と睡蓮は違い、これらは睡蓮です。

Tropical Water Lilies
I heard that hot spring water flows through pipes in the pond  
so that water lilies can blossom from May to early November.
By the way, water lily is different from lotus.
These are water lilies.

睡蓮の向こうに見えるけむりは、海地獄から。
The steam beyond the Lily pond from Umi Jigoku.

海地獄 / Umi Jigoku : Umi Hell

綺麗な青！
温度は98度、深さは200mもある！

こちらは赤い地獄 / This is Red Hell

海地獄の隣には赤い地獄があります。Red Hell is next door to Umi Jigoku.

いろいろなことに嬉しい驚きがありました。

I was surprised and pleased by many things.
