1) 絵と文 / Pictures and Writing

おそらく、完全翻訳であり、ターゲットは、こどもでなく、大人。

リスベート•ツヴェルガー(女史)と江國 香織 さんの組み合わせは、あっていると感じました。

江國さんの作品を3冊:
『つめたいよるに』(理論社、1989)、
『桃子』; 絵本 (旬報社,2000)、
『東京タワー』(新潮社 2006)
しか読んでいない ので、この感想は、いいかえるべきかもしれません。(彼女の原作の『間宮兄弟』の映画は見ています)

絵と文章は似合っていると。

この両者とオズの話があっているかというと、あっていないというのが私の答えです。

それでも、この両者が作り出している新しいオズの世界は魅力的です。

Pictures and Writing

Probably it is fully translated, and the target is not children, but adults. 

I felt the combination of Lisbeth Zwerger and Kaori Ekuni is good. 

Kaori Ekuni is a popular author rather than a translator in Japan.

I have only read three of her books : "Tsumetai Yoruni: In The Cold Night"(Rieonsha 1989),"MOMOKO"; a picture book (Junpousha 2000), and "Tokyo Tower"(Shinchosha 2006).

(I watched a comedy film "The Mamiya Brothers"(2006), from her original book)

I feel the pictures in this edition of  "The Wizard of Oz" suit this Japanese translation. 

Do they both suit the original English story of Oz?

My answer is NO!

However, it is attractive that  together the Japanese edition creates 
a new world of Oz.

2) 新しいオズの世界/ New World of Oz

ツヴェルガーは、この絵本で新しい試みをしています。

彼女も、ドロシーと同じように冒険をしたと、あとがきで書いています。

以前の彼女の絵は、おとぎ話にあっていた古風な絵でしたが、今回は現代的な印象です。

具象から、幾分抽象に近づいた絵で、彼女の品の良い持ち味も失わず、とても素敵な絵だと思います。

私にとっては、今までの'オズの世界'は、はっきりとした、強い色で
表現される、明るく、乾燥した世界です。

ですが、ツヴェルガーが作り出した世界は、やや霧に包まれ、湿気が感じられる世界です。

あまり湿度が感じられると、明るいオズの世界から離れてしまいます。

それを防ぐべく、赤をポイントにして全体を締め、霧をはらし、世界をはっきり見せています。

エメラルドの国では、皆がみどりの眼鏡をかけなければならず、世界がみどりがかって見えてしまいます。

そのみどりと補色関係の赤をポイントに選ぶツヴェルガーは、さすが！

彼女の冒険は、ハッピーエンドでしたね。

楽しいアイディア！
みどりのめがねが本についています。

A fun idea!
These Green Glasses are included with the book.

めがねマークのページのときに上のめがねを
かけて読むという設定です。

When the page number has the glasses drawing next to it, 
then we wear the green glasses while reading and 
looking at the illustrations on that page (above).

New World of Oz

Zwerger tried out a new style of illustration, for her, in this book. 

In the postscript, she wrote that she had an adventure like Dorothy's. 

Her previous pictures are quaint which suit fairy-tales and classic novels, whereas I feel this book's pictures are modern in style. 

I think her new picture style is marvelous.

Her style changed from representational to slightly abstract, and yet still keeps most of her  distinctive elegant quality.

For me, before this book, Oz's world is characterized by clear and strong colours, the world is  bright and dry. 

However, Zwerger made a new Oz's world which is covered with a slight haze, so I feel  moisture there. 

If the reader feels a lot of moisture, their world would separate from the bright world.

I think she used the accents of red colour to make the whole picture sharp and keep the world of Oz clear and bright. 

In the story, everybody must wear green glasses in the Emerald City, so everything appears covered with green.

 Red is the complementary colour of green, and so was selected to accent this book's pictures, by the great illustrator that Zwerger is. 

Zwerger's adventure has a happy-ending, doesn't it?

3) もっと意訳を? / Even More Free Translation?

私は原書を読んでいないので、ここで書くことは推測です。

この絵本のツヴェルガーの絵は、とても素晴らしいけれど、
L.フランク•ボウム のオズの世界とは違うのです。

"ツヴェルガーのオズ"は、"ボウム のオズ"よりも、ずっと上品で
繊細、読み手が人生の経験を積んだなら、ボウム が描こうとした悲しみよりも深く感じられると思います。

"ボウム のオズ"を完全翻訳しただけなら、それはツヴェルガーが作り出したオズの世界とあわないでしょう。

江國さんの訳が、もう少し、大人向けに意訳されていたら、
'ツヴェルガーのオズ' は、申し分なかったように思います。

もしかしたら、江國さんはすでにそれは心がけたのかもしれません(絵と文は似合っていると思いますし)、ですが、それでは足りなかったのではないかと、私は思います。

でもそれは、翻訳者の江國さんのせいではなく、日本の編集者の責任かもしれません。

Even More Free Translation?

I haven't read the original book in English, so my writings here are just my guesses. 

Although  Zwerger's pictures in this book are superb, the world is different from "Baum's Oz". 

"Zwerger's Oz" is much more elegant and delicate than "Baum's Oz", and if the reader is mature, the reader could feel deeper sadness than in "Baum's Oz" . 

I think if the translation from the original of Baum were merely translated directly, it would not suit "Zwerger's Oz". 

I think Ekuni translation should have been even more free, so it could suit "Zwerger's Oz" flawlessly.

However, it may not be Ekuni's doing, the responsibility might be that of the Japanese editor. 

4) 最後に! / Conclusion! 

あげあしとりのような事を書いてしまいましたが、結果からいえば、この絵本は素敵です。

ツヴェルガーの絵の魔力でしょう。

こどもの絵本、大人の絵本という分類に関係なく、本として美しいです。

それで、十分！

Conclusion! 

Although I appear to criticize, I still feel this book is wonderful.

This is Zwerger's magic, isn't it?

Whether the reader is child or adult, it is beautiful as a book. 

It is enough!
