A. 絶対的悪 / Absolute Evil
〈オーリエラントの魔道師〉シリーズの第一作、
に続く第二作目が本書『魔道師の月』です。
主人公は、魔導師キアルスと魔導師レイサンダーの二人です。
同じ世界ではあるものの、前作の話の続きではありません。
キアルスは前作の主人公、カリュドウの前世の一人、シルヴァインの友であり、家庭教師のような存在でした。
『魔道師の月』では、 彼は魔導師アンジストにシルヴァインを殺害され、自暴自棄になっているところから描写されはじめます。(P.34〜)
シルヴァインは透視 (トオミ) の力を使用して、アンジストの中に
"なにものにも汚されることのない純粋な紫水晶が輝いてる"
(『夜の写本師』P.174 L15)
のを見ます。
アンジストの中に、'純粋な紫水晶' : 善の光があることを読者は知り、また前作の終わりでは、アンジストの生まれ変わり、'純粋な紫水晶を持って生まれた少女も登場し、少女が明るい未来を持つであろうことが示唆されます。
アンジストのすべてが悪ではなかったことがわかります。
ところが、『魔道師の月』では、"暗樹"という絶対的悪が、人間ではないモノが、主人公の宿敵として登場します。
本書にも、本書の紹介文 (宣伝コピー) にも、"暗樹"は
'太鼓の闇から生まれた...ひどく禍々しいもの' (P.23 L6~8)
'こんなにも禍々しく怖ろしい太古の闇'
と書かれています。
読み進めうちに、"暗樹" は、人の内側から闇に侵食させていく怖い存在であるかが私 (読者) にもわかるようになります。
私は、"暗樹"から『指輪物語』[J・R・R・トールキン (1892 - 1973)]
のサウロンの目のモバイル版を想像しました。
けれでもサウロンも元から悪でも闇の権化でもなかったので、元々からの悪という "暗樹" の存在は最強です！
"暗樹" のは、その存在を完璧に消し去ることができません。
『魔道師の月』は、この絶対悪の敵への対処を探る物語であると私は感じました。
月は闇の中の希望、魔導師キアルスと魔導師レイサンダーの希望なのです。
敵がこのような存在であるがゆえに、今回のお話では、それを倒す役目の主人公が二人必要であったのでしょう。
闇が内にないレイサンダーがその一人に選ばれるのは、基本は強欲さがないホビットが最強な指輪を火の山へ投げ捨てる役目を背追う理由と私には重なって見えます。
ハイ・ファンタジーなので、発想が自ずと『指輪物語』につながっているしまうことを止めることができません。
これは純粋な読み方ではなかったかもしれませんが仕方ありません。
ですが、『指輪物語』が比較の存在として現れることは、それだけこの物語がハイ・ファンタジーとして素晴らしいからだと思います。
Absolute Evil
The <AURIELANT SORCERERS> series hasn't been translated into English yet, so spellings such as character names and unique things are based on my guess.
The second work following the first work of <AURIELANT SORCERERS> series,"SCRIBE OF SORCERY" [2011 / Tomoko Inuishi (? ~) / Tokyo Sogensha] is this book "SORCERER'S MOON".
The two main characters are a sorcerer Kiares and a sorcerer Ray Thunder.
Although it is set in the same world, this is not a continuation of the story of the previous book.
However, the sorcerer Kiares does appear in "SCRIBE OF SORCERY" as a private secretary.
Kiares was like a friend and a tutor of Sylvain who is one of previous lives of the main character Karyudo in the previous book.
In "SORCERER'S MOON", he begins to be portrayed as desperate after Sylvain was murdered by the sorcerer Angist. (P.34〜)
Sylvain uses the power of clairvoyance into Angist and she saw
"A pure shining amethyst that is not polluted by anything".
("SCRIBE OF SORCERY" P.174 L15)
Readers know that there is a 'Pure Amethyst' in Angist : the light of goodness, and at the end of the previous work, Angist was reborn as a girl with 'Pure Amethyst'' and it is suggested that the girl will have a bright future.
We can see that Angist was not all evil.
However, in "SORCERER'S MOON", the absolute evil of "Anjyu" ; "Dark Tree" or "Dark Log", a non-human thing appears as a nemesis of the main character.
In both this book and the introductory text (promotional copy) for this book, "Anjyu" is
"Born from the darkness of drums ... a terrible thing"
(P.23 L6 ~ 8)
"The ancient darkness that is so terrifying and scary".
As we read, we find out that "Anjyu" is a scary being that invades people with darkness.
"Anjyu" reminds me a mobile version of Eye of Sauron in
"The Lord of the Rings" [J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973)]
However, since Sauron was neither evil nor the incarnation of darkness from the beginning, the existence of "Anjyu", which is the original evil, is the strongest!
The existence of "Anjyu" cannot be completely erased.
I felt that "SORCERER'S MOON" is a story that seeks to deal with this absolutely evil enemy.
The moon is the hope in the darkness, the hope of the sorcerer Kiares and the sorcerer Ray Thunder.
Because the enemy is such a powerful force, in this story, it seems that two main characters were needed to defeat it.
The reason why Ray Thunder, who has no darkness, is chosen as one of them, for me, overlaps with the reason why the Hobbit, who has no greed, is burdened with the role of throwing the strongest ring into the mountain of fire.
Since it is a High fantasy, I cannot stop the idea from being connected to "The Lord of the Rings".
This may not have been a pure reading, but I could not help the way
I read this book.
However, I think that the reason why "The Lord of the Rings" comes to mind as a comparative story, is that it is wonderful as a high fantasy.
B. タペストリー / Tapestry
『夜の写本師』と同様にこの物語でも、主人公は過去の人物になり、その人生を実際に経験して、現在に戻ってきます。
この手法は、作家乾石 智子の得意技であると感じます。
キアルスは、追手から逃れる術として、タペストリーの中へ入り、
キアルスの時代から400年前のテイバドールの人生をなぞって生きます。
キアルスが自暴自棄の生活の中で、燃やしてしまった『タージの歌謡集』を創作した人がテイバドールでした。
テイバドールの人生は興味深く魅力的です。
'乾石氏の得意技' の転生には必ず、過去の転生した人物の死が伴われます。
『夜の写本師』も含めた、これまでの転生上の死の中で、私には、
テイバドールの死が最も切なく、残念に感じました。
キアルスが彼の時代に戻り、テイバドールが抱えていた問題の解決はします。
ですが、私の心情的には、テイバドール自身の手で、彼の時代にさせてあげたかったのです。
テイバドールの死は、読者の彼への好意を強め、是非ともキアルスに問題解決をしてほしいと望ませます。
読者にこのように思わせるように、乾石氏は書いたと推測します。
'タペストリーが未来を折り上げてゆく'というアイディアは以前何かのファンタジー作品で読みました。
それ以後、私はタペストリーがお話しに出てくるとそのアイディアに関連したエピソードを期待します。
『魔道師の月』では、その期待にガッツリと応えてくれました。
Tapestry
In this story, as in "SCRIBE OF SORCERY", the protagonist becomes a person of the past, experiencing his life and returning to his present.
I feel that this technique is a specialty of the author Tomoko Inuishi.
Kiares enters the tapestry as a way to escape the pursuit and follows the life of Taybadol 400 years before the time of Kiares.
The person who created the "Taj Songbook" that Kiares burned in his desperate life was Taybadol.
The life of Taybadol is interesting and fascinating.
The Transmigration, 'Inuishi's specialty', is always accompanied by the former person's death.
Of all the deaths in transmigration, including "SCRIBE OF SORCERY", for me, the death of Taybadol was the most sad and disappointing.
Kiares returns to the present and solves the problems that Taybadol had.
However, my emotional desire was to let Taybadol, himself, succeed in his time.
The death of Taybadol strengthens the reader's regard for him and encourages our desire that Kiares should solve the problem.
I presume that Inuishi wrote it to make the reader think this way.
I had read the idea of 'Tapestry Weaves the Future' somewhere in a fantasy work before.
From then on, when a Tapestry comes up, I expect episodes related to that idea.
In "SORCERER'S MOON", the story followed my expectation enough.
C. 人気作家 / Popular Author
作者特有の描写、人々の絡み合いの面白さ、物語の終息の仕方など、私には楽しめ、満足がゆく本でした。
きっと多くの読者が好意的にこの本を受け入れたのではないかと思います。
この後、〈オーリエラントの魔道師〉シリーズとして続々と出版されていますから、きっとそうなのです。
〈オーリエラントの魔道師〉シリーズ以外にも、乾石氏はデビューして数年で、ファンタジー本を数冊世に出しています。
最近では創元ファンタジイ新人賞の選考委員も努められています。
その選考委員には、ファンジー界の大御所 (と私が思っている）
井辻 朱美 (イツジ アケミ / 1955 ~)もいます。
このように井辻氏と肩を並べていることで、乾石氏がいかにファンタジー業界に認められているかがわかります。
私としても嬉しい！
私の '未読の山' が崩れたら、乾石氏作品をもっと読みたいです。
いつか、そんな日がやってくることを願っています....。
Popular Author
This was a book that I enjoyed and was satisfied with, enjoying the author's unique depictions, the fun of people's intertwining, and the way the story ends.
I'm sure many readers have accepted this book in a positive way.
After this, she published her books, one after another in the <AURIELANT SORCERERS> series, so I'm sure this is the case.
In addition, in the first few years after her debut Inuishi has released several fantasy books not in the <AURIELANT SORCERERS> series.
Recently, she worked as a selection committee member for the Sogen Fantastic New Face Award.
The selection committee also includes Akemi Itsuji (1955 ~), a renowned figure in the fantasy world (I think).
By lining up with Itsuji in this way, I can see how Inuishi is recognized in the fantasy world.
I'm glad too!
When my 'Pile of Books' is broken, I would like to read more of Inuishi's works.
I hope that day will come ....
