After Looking at Cherry Blossoms at Night
3月に撮影した夜桜の写真を見て、昔、昔に読んだ『ゲイルズバーグの春を愛す』を思い出し、また読みたくなりました。
購入した本でしたが行方しれずになって手元になく、再び購入しました。

日本での初版が1980年で、今回、購入した本が、2016年21刷めでした。
長い間(40年以上)、地道に売れているのを感じました。
物語の表現が多少古い印象を受けはしますが、この本に惹かれる読者はいつの時代でも一定数存在しているのです。

After Looking at Cherry Blossoms at Night
Looking at the photos of the night cherry blossoms taken in March,
I remembered "I Love Galesburg in the Springtime", which I had read a long time ago, and I wanted to read again.
It was a book I purchased but I bought it again because I couldn't find my copy.
The first edition in Japan was in 1980, and the book I bought this time was the 21st print of 2016.
I felt that it has been selling steadily for a long time (more than 40 years).
Although the expression of these stories seem a little old, there are always a certain number of readers who are attracted to this book.

私はジャック・フィニイの他の本は読んだことがありません。

| 『ゲイルズバーグの春を愛す』 (1963 / 英語版) 英語版と日本語版の雰囲気が随分違います。 私は日本語版の方が好きです。 何しろ、大好きな内田善美さんのイラストレーションですしね。 "I Love Galesburg in the Springtime" (1963) The atmosphere of the English version and the Japanese version is quite different. I enjoyed reading every story.
My favourite is "I Love Galesburg in the Springtime" which was also the title of the book.
I haven't read any other Jack Finney books.

A. "ゲイルズバーグの春を愛す"
"I Love Galesberg in the Springtime"
随分前に、一度読んだ本でした。
その時の感想をよく覚えていませんが好印象であったことを覚えていました。
短編、"ゲイルズバーグの春を愛す"は、ファンタジー、ミステリー、微妙に混じり合う物語で、私は最後の方ではホラーの要素も感じました。
物語は、開発で、潰されようとしているゲイルズバーグの街を守ろうとして起きる不思議な現象を描いています。
私は、物語の読みはじめに、
'現在の映画やドラマの元のアイディア(元ネタ)がこの本にはあるのだ'
と感じました。
この本は、現在出版されている日本語版だけでなく、英語出版された当時すでに、'ノスタルジックで' と紹介されています。
ファンタジーやSFなどのカテゴリーでは、今では、古典の領域に入るのかもしれません。
品がよく節度をわきまえた表現で、これが多少古い印象になってしまうようにも思います。
過去にゲイルズバーグを愛した人々の気持ちまたは街の精霊が不思議な現象を起こし、開発を止めようとしたり、火事から建物を守ったりしていると私は理解しました。
偶然にもこの本を読み進めている最中に、住宅建設のために鎌倉山の木々が切られてしまった風景を見ました。
鎌倉山の木々については下記。
私はその風景で心を痛め、ゲイルズバーグの話を思い出しました。
(鎌倉山や七里ヶ浜の住宅街も自然破壊をして作られたものなので、そこの住人が今更、心を痛めるのも自分勝手な感情なのですが...）
作家、ジャック・フィニイも開発により破壊された何かのために心と痛め、ゲイルズバーグの話を書いたのかもしれません。

"I Love Galesburg in the Springtime"
This was a book I read a long time ago.
I don't remember exactly how I felt at that time, but I remember that I had a good impression.
The short story, "I Love Galesberg in the Springtime" is a fantasy, mystery, subtle mix of stories, and I also felt a horror element at the end.
The story depicts a mysterious phenomenon that occurs trying to protect a city Galesburg, which would be about to be crushed by development.
This book was originally introduced in English as being 'nostalgic', and again as 'nostalgic' in the Japanese editions.
In categories such as fantasy and SF, this may now be in the classic realm.
While I was re-reading the beginning of the story, I felt that
'This story had been used as the idea for films or dramas'.
The stories use well-moderated expressions, and I think this gives a slightly old-fashioned impression.
I understand that the feelings of those who loved Galesburg in the past or the spirits of the city have caused mysterious phenomenons, trying to stop development or protecting the building from fire.
By chance, while reading this book, I saw a view where trees in Kamakurayama were cut due to planned construction of houses.
About trees in Kamakurayama, below.
The scene hurt me and reminded me of Galesburg's story.
(Since the residential areas in Kamakurayama and Shichirigahama were also created by destroying nature, my feeling is selfish because I am a resident of this area.)
The author, Jack Finney may have grieved for something destroyed by development, so he had written the story of Galesburg.
B. 他の作品 / Other Works
他の作品ではSFの要素もあります。
作者にとっては、'不思議な物語'であれば、それがファンタジーだろうが、ミステリーであろうが、SFあろうが関係ないのでしょう。
先にも書きましたが、この作者の表現は、控えめな表現に感じます。
(作家は控えめな表現だとは思っていないかもしれませんが)
'私を見ろ！見ろ！' と言う表現が個性と言うわけではなく、控えめな表現であっても、個性は明確に表現されるのだと、この本は感じさせてくれます。
むしろそう言った個性の方が半永久的であるのではないかと思えます。
そういえば、作品としても、"おい、こっちをむけ! " があります。
その話は、世の中に認められない人々が公共物や観光資源に落書きをしたり、この物語の登場人物のように幽霊になったりするということが書かれています。
見ろ！見ろ！という行為は、その表現方法によっては、中身がない、個性がないと作者も思っているように感じます。
"クルーエット夫妻の家" は私にはかなりホラー色があり、怖かったです。
家に人の魂が乗っ取られるような、吸われてしまうような気がしました。
この作品にホラーを感じるのはごく少数かもしれません。
ここでのホラー感は"ゲイルズバーグの春を愛す"の最後で感じたものと似ています。
私は、"大胆不敵な気球乗り"が結構好きです。
大人の中の子供部分を、ヤンチャ感があるように思いました。
他の作品もそれぞれ、私には本当に面白かった！
きっとまた、この本は読みたくなってしまうように思います。

Other Works
Other works also have science fiction elements.
For the author, if it's a 'wonder story', it doesn't matter whether it is called fantasy, mystery, or science fiction.
As I wrote earlier, this author's writing feels muted.
(Although the author may not have thought it is understated.)
I don't think that the use of some expressions of 'Look at me! Look!' show individuality, this book lets me think even though it has quiet depictions, actually strong individuality is clearly expressed.
Rather, I think that such individuality is more long-term.
Speaking of which, one of the other stories is called, "Hey, Look At Me!".
The story tells us that people who are not recognized in the world scribble on public things and resources for tourists, or become a ghost like the characters in this story.
'Look! Look!' depending on the expression method, I feel that the author thinks that there is no content or individuality.
The "Cruettes' House" was pretty 'Horror' to me and scary.
I felt like the souls of people were taken over and sucked out by the house.
Very few people may feel horror in this work.
The horror feeling here is similar to what I felt in the end of "I Love Galesberg in the Springtime".
I quite like 'The Intrepid Aeronaut', one of the other stories.
I thought that the child part of the adult had a sense of mischievousness.
Each of the other works was really interesting for me!
I'm sure I wii want to re-read this book again.
