Rの実家、マンチェスターを訪ねたり、友人を訪ねたり、英国内旅行をし、8月にはオランダへ行きました。
8月5日のオランダ到着日に、ユトレヒト / Utrecht 市の中心街を流れる旧運河 (アウデ運河) / Oudegracht 沿いを散策しました。
旧運河沿いには、たくさんのカフェやレストランがあります。

8月5日のオランダ到着日に、ユトレヒト / Utrecht 市の中心街を流れる旧運河 (アウデ運河) / Oudegracht 沿いを散策しました。
旧運河沿いには、たくさんのカフェやレストランがあります。
ですが、明るくても遅い時間になると、人通りも少なく、カフェも運河も静かになります。
私達はユトレヒトに一週間滞在したので、ユトレヒト内の観光をした時も、アムステルダムまで出かけた時も、静かな運河沿いを何度か目にしました。
ああでも、もっとずっと遅い時間になれば、また賑やかになるのかもしれません？

Quiet Time
I spent the summer of 2019 in Britain which is my husband R's country.
We visited R's parents' house in Manchester, visited friends, traveled in Britain, and went to the Netherlands in August.
On 5th of August, we arrived in the Netherlands, we walked along Oudegracht : the old canal in the centre of Utrecht.
There are many cafes and restaurants along the old canal.
However, when it is bright and late, there is less traffic and the cafes and canals are quieter.
We stayed in Utrecht for a week, so when we went sightseeing in Utrecht and went to Amsterdam, we saw the quiet canal several times.
Oh, but maybe it will be more lively at a much later time?

The photographs in this section are mainly taken on the 5th, but there are other days as well.
2) ドム教会 / St.Martin's Cathedral
ドム教会（Domkerk / Dom van Utrecht）とドム塔 (大聖堂の塔 / Domtoren）は、ユトレヒトの代表的な観光名所です。
ドム教会は、聖マルティン / Saint Martin of Tours (316~336 - 397~400)に捧げられ、聖マルティン大聖堂とも言います。
ドム教会は、1254年に大聖堂としてゴシック様式で建てられました。
ユトレヒトの代表的な観光スポットにも関わらず、私達は外から見ただけでした。
再び、ユトレヒトへ行く機会があれば、訪ねてみたいです。
でも、塔には登らないでしょうね...私達、ひ弱なのです。

St.Martin's Cathedral
St.Martin's Cathedral (Dom Church / Dom van Utrecht) and the Dom tower (Cathedral tower / Domtoren) are Utrecht's main tourist sites.
Dom Church is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours (316 ~ 336-397 ~ 400) and is also called St. Martin's Cathedral.
St. Martin is the first person to become a Saint without having been martyred (Canonization).
The Dom Church was built in 1254 as a cathedral in Gothic style.
The only pre-reformation cathedral in the Netherlands, it has been a Protestant church since 1580.
Although it is Utrecht's main tourist site, we only saw it from the outside.
I would like to visit there if I have a chance of visiting Utrecht, again.
But we won't climb the tower ... because we are weak.
3) シンケルのお店 / Winkel van Sinkel : Sinkel's Shop
A. 最初のデパート / First Department Store
旧運河沿いの道、アウデグラハト( Oudegracht) 通りで、4体の女神像が目を引く建物があります。
アントン・シンケル / Anton Sinkel (1785 - 1848) が、“ウィンケル・ヴァン・シンケル / Winkel van Sinkel ” 社を起こしました。
その始まりは、アムステルダムで織物商(呉服屋)で、彼は事業を拡大させ、1939年にオランダで最初のデパート: "Winkel van Sinkel" をユトレヒトに開店しました。
建物は、1837年から1839年の間に建てられました。
ウィンケル・ヴァン・シンケルは、'何でも買えるお店' を意味する、謳い文句になりました。

First Department Store
On the old canal road, Oudegracht Street, there is a building with four eye-catching statues.
The statue is called 'Caryatid'' and serves as a pillar, and the building is named "Winkel van Sinkel" (Sinkel's Shop).
Anton Sinkel (1785-1848) founded the company "Winkel van Sinkel".
It started as a fabric store in Amsterdam and he expanded his business and founded the first department store in the Netherlands: "Winkel van Sinkel" in Utrecht in 1839.
The building was built between 1837 and 1839.
Winkel van Sinkel has become a general term for shops where you can buy anything.

Unfortunately, the company went bankrupt in 1912, and the building has long had a bank in it.
Currently, there is a Grand Cafe Restaurant.
There are also plans for dance parties and rental spaces.

4つの鋳鉄製の女神像はイギリスで制作されました。
19世紀初期、このような巨大な彫像は、英国のみで制作可能でした。

質実剛健の英国のイメージがし、この彫像もたくましいです。
彫像は、運河を輸送中、荷物用クレーンが彫像と共に水に落ちてしまいました。
そのために女神は、"英国人娼婦"という汚名がついてしまいました。
当時、運河の水は汚水だったのかなと想像します。
まあ、今でも運河の水は、色からすると、綺麗だとは言えないように感じます。

Goddess or Whore?
The four cast iron goddesses were made in England.
In the early 19th century, such huge statues could only be produced in Britain.
My image of Britain is simplicity and fortitude, so these statues are powerful.
While lifting one of the statues from a barge on the canal, a crane and the statue fell into the water.
The goddesses were therefore stigmatized as the "British whores".
I imagine that the water in the canal was sewage at that time.
Well, I still feel that the water of the canal is not beautiful in terms of colour.

宿泊所の近くに、うさぎの彫像がありました。
うさこちゃん : Miffy (ミッフィ) / Nijntje Pluis (ナインチェ・ピラウス) のことが頭にあったので、この "考えるうさぎ氏" も撮影しました。
私が勝手に "考えるうさぎ氏" と名付けたのですが、後になって、英国の彫刻家、
バリー・フラナガン/ Barry Flanagan (1941 - 2009) 作の "岩の上の考える人(思想家) / Thinker on a Rock"というタイトルの彫刻であることがわかりました。

テート・ブリテンは、2011年9月から2012年1月まで、フラナガン初期作品 (1965 - 1982) の回顧展を開催しました。
4つの女神も、"岩の上の思想家" も英国がらみで、面白いな〜と感じます。
There was a rabbit statue near the accommodation.
Miffy / Nijntje Pluis was in my head, so I photographed the statue, "Thinker, Mr.Rabbit"(I named it myself).
I thought of it as "Thinking Rabbit", but later on, I found out that the statue, by a British sculptor, Barry Flanagan (1941-2009), is titled "Thinker on a Rock ".

I'm a little glad that 'my title' is close to the real one!
The "Hare series" is also in some places in Britain, Dublin in Ireland and Washington, D.C. in USA.
Tate Britain held a retrospective show Early Works 1965–1982 from September 2011 to January 2012.
The Four Goddesses and the "Thinker on a Rock" are related to Britain and I feel it is interesting.
