白川郷は、岐阜県内の庄川 (ショウガワ) 流域の呼び名です。
私たちがよく目にする合掌造りの村の風景は、
大野郡白川村荻野町地区 (オオノグン シラカワムラ オギノマチ チク) で、
通常、ここが白川郷として知られています。
正式の白川郷は、白川村と高山市荘川町 (旧荘川村 / ショウカワ ムラ) 及び、
高山市清見町 (旧清見村 / キヨミ ムラ) の一部に相当します。
1995年に、"白川郷・五箇山の合掌造り集落"として、白川郷と五箇山にある
合掌造りの集落群が世界遺産に登録されました。
五箇山は、富山県の南西端にある南砺市 (ナントシ)の旧平村( タイラ ムラ)、
旧上平村(カミタイ ムラ)、旧利賀村 (トガ ムラ)を合わせた地域です。
白川郷は、かなり観光地化されていて、がっかりされる方も多いようですが、それもこの村がこの山間地で生き残って行くための手段と考えれば、仕方ないことだと思います。
江戸時代 (1603 - 1868) には、養蚕とともに、銃の玉作りが行われ、この地を支えたと聞きました。
秘密漏洩を防ぐにふさわしい 土地であったからこその、玉作りであったそうです。
一般の農家が平屋ですが、ここは、りっぱな三層、四層の家があるのは、こうした背景による収入源があったからなのではないかと察せられます。
この村は、生き抜く術として、その時代に合わせて変化してきたのだと感じます。

We
often see pictures of 'Gassho-zukuri' described as Shirakawa-gō, which is an area,though most photographs are only of Ogino-machi area, Shirakawa Village,
Ōno District, Gifu Prefecture.

Formal Shirakawa-gō is Shirakawa
Village, Takayama
City, Shōkawa - cho (former Shōkawa village)
and a part of Takayama City, Kiyomi-cho (former Kiyomi
village).
In 1995, "Historic Villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama", a group of villages with 'Gassho-zukuri' being the principal building style, located in Shirakawa-gō
and Gokayama, was registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Gokayama is an area within Nanto City including the former villages of Taira, Kamitaira and Toga in Toyama Prefecture.
Shirakawa-gō is quite touristic and seems to disappoint a few people, although
I think that it would be unavoidable if we think bout how this village can survive in this remote mountain area.
In the Edo period (1603 - 1868), I heard that gun bullets were made here which suited protecting their secret, supporting their survival.
The villages where very difficult to access, thus very appropriate preventing leakage of its secrets mainking of bullets.
A general farmer's house was of one storey, though here the prosperity due to this background there are fine three and four storey houses here.
I feel that this village has changed their survival techniques according to the times.

Most
people walk across the suspension bridge (Deai Bashi : Meeting
Bridge)
over
the Shō
River and enter Shirakawa-gō (Shirakawa
Village).

| '雪化粧' という言葉が似合う景色です。 It is a scenem matching the word 'Snow-Makeup' ; Dusted Snow. |

| 多少観光地色が品を失わせ、趣にかける点もりますが、 それでもやはり、惹かれる景色です。 Sightseeing atmosphere seems unrefined and lacking good taste,
however, it is still an attractive scene.

雪だるまと白川郷の不釣り合いを感じつつも、
観光客を喜ばせようとする気持ちを感じると、これもありかなと思います。 The signs show "Shirakawa-gō".
I
feel a slight mis-match between the snowmen and "Shirakawa-gō",
however,
I think these are here to delight tourists, so they were alright
here.

| 消火栓 いろいろなところで、私は消火栓の形に惹かれますが、 白川郷の消火栓は格別好きです。 この村では屋外屋内問わず、禁煙です。 Fire Hydrant In various places, I am attracted to the shapes of hydrants and I like the fire hydrants in Shirakawago very much. No Smoking in the village, inside and outside. |

'和田家'は国の重要文化財指定を受けています。

Wada House' is one of the Important Cultural Properties of Japan. About inside of the House and the Trip in 2013, below. 
今回はここだけでなく、内見できるどの家も見る時間はありません。
まあ、前回の時も、内見したのは、ここだけで、
他の家を見る余裕はありませんでしたけれど...。
This time there was no time to see inside any house that was open.
Well, our last visit, we only saw inside here,

| りっぱな家...と思いましたが、明善寺(ミョウゼンジ) の庫裏 (クリ)でした。 1817年建立。 I thought this was a fine house, though this is a Kuri : a kitchen or a living space of Buddhist temple. It was built in 1817. |
