ロビン・フッズ・ベイ/ Robin Hood's Bay の後に、ウィットビー / Whitby に戻り、ウィットビー修道院 / Whitby Abbey に行きました。
ウィットビー修道院 / Whitby Abbey は、ベネディクト修道院の遺跡の一つで、
ウィットビーの東の崖上から北海を見渡すところにあります。
聖メアリー教会 / Church of Saint Mary (St Mary's Church)が東の崖上にあることは、19日にウィットビーに行ったときに見ていました。

聖メアリー教会の裏にウィットビー修道院があることを、この日に知りました。
通常、観光客は聖メアリー教会やウィットビー修道院には、崖下から徒歩で199段の階段を登ります。
実は、そんなことも知りませんでした。
聖メアリー教会は、ブラム・ストカー / Bram Stoker (1847 - 1912) が
『ドラキュラ』(1897) の着想をとくに得た場所であると聞いてはいましたが、
ウィットビー修道院も同様であるということも、のちに知りました。

After Robin Hood's Bay
After Robin Hood's Bay, we returned to Whitby and went to Whitby Abbey.
The Abbey is a ruined Benedictine Abbey, overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff of Whitby.
I saw the Church of Saint Mary (St Mary's Church) on the East Cliff when we went to Whitby on 19th.

On the day, I just knew Whitby Abbey is behind Church of Saint Mary.
Normally when tourists access to Church of Saint Mary or Whitby Abbey, they climb 199 steps from under the cliff.
Actually I did not know about this.
I heard Bram Stoker (1847 - 1912) had the idea of "Dracula" (1897) from particularly Church of Saint Mary, although I knew later that Whitby Abbey may also have influenced him .

今日見られることができる修道院の遺跡は、13世紀以後のものです。
ヘンリー8世 (1491 - 1547) が修道院解散 (the dissolution of the monasteries) を1536年と1538年に実施しイングランドとウェールズにあった800以上の修道院が閉鎖されました。

修道院の遺跡で最も初期の
詳細図の版画( エングレービング / Engraving) は、 1711年にサミュエル・バック / Samuel Buck (1696 - 1779) によって作られました。 版画は教会の外壁を完璧に表しています。 しかし、修道院の建物はほとんど完全に消えさっています。 (コメントは下記の翻訳を私がしています） The earliest detailed view of the abbey ruins, engraved by Samuel Buck (1696 - 1779) in 1711.
It shows the shell of the church complete,
but the monastic buildings have almost completely disappeared.

The first Abbey was originally founded in 657AD by the Saxon King of Northumbria,
Oswiu (c612 - 5 ~ 670 / reign 642 - 670) .
Henry
VIII (1491
- 1547) ordered the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536 and
1538 and over 800 Abbeys were closed in England and Wales.
This Abbey was one of them.
In 1914, here was damaged by a German bombardment from a warship.

| ウィットビー修道院 / Whitby Abbey R is an indirect member of English Heritage. Usually R and I enter to their sites free by his license. However, here the abbey had a special event on the day, we could not entry as free. Then R asked me ' Do you really really want to look at the Abbey?' I felt my enthusiasm for the Abbey was not enough as 'really really'. Because I worried about moving time for Middlesbrough which we would stay on the day, I was satisfied looking at abbey ruins by Byland and Rievaulx Abbeys and I caught R's negative feeling. Then I decided I did not have to go in. If I have a chance, next time, I would look at the Abbey closely. | ウィットビー・ユース・ホステル 普通のユースホテルとは趣が違うので、びっくり！ マナー・ハウスか、ホテルのようですよね。 それもそのはず、もとはマナー・ハウス / manor house。 古い建物を約6億3千万円かけて修復し、2007年にオープンしました。
英国の文化財指定建造物 / Listed building の 'グレード I / Grade I ' にあたり、
最も重要視されている建物です。
ウィットビー修道院も聖メアリー教会も 'グレード I。

Whitby Youth Hostel The building is tasteful and different from normal Youth Hostels, for me, so I was surprised. It looks like a manor house or a hotel, doesn't it? No wonder, it was a manor house. They used 3.5 million pounds for the renovation and opened in 2007.
Listed building in Britain, it is Grade I : buildings of exceptional interest.

建てられました。
現在、ビジターセンター、カフェなどに使用されています。
