1) 聖メアリー教会 
  'Church of Saint Mary' (St Mary's Church)  

1110年頃、聖公会教区教会として設立されました。

塔と翼廊は、12、13世紀からあります。

英国の文化財指定建造物 / Listed building の 'グレード I / Grade I '
に指定されています。

It was founded around 1110 as an Anglican Parish Church.

The tower and transepts are from the 12th and 13th Centuries.

it is a Grade I Listed Building.

聖メアリー教会は、エスク川の河口、ウィットビー / Whitby の東の崖上に位置しています。

すぐ近くには、ウィットビー修道院があります。

私達は、ウィットビー修道院の駐車場を使用し、聖メアリー教会へ行きました。


'Church of Saint Mary' (St Mary's Church) is located above the mouth of River Esk on the East Cliff of Whitby.

It is close to Whitby Abbey.

We used the Abbey's carpark and went to the church.

話の中に
聖メアリー教会は、ブラム・ストカー / Bram Stoker (1847 - 1912) が

『ドラキュラ』(1897) の着想をとくに得た場所であると聞いていました。
私は映画は見たことがあります(どのバージョンかは不明) が、
本は読んでいません。
話の中にこの教会の名前が出てくるそうです。

教会の中には入らず、墓地を歩いただけでした。

In A Novel

I heard that Bram Stoker (1847 - 1912) had the idea of "Dracula" (1897) from particularly Church of Saint Mary (St.Mary's Church).
I have seen a film, "Dracula" (which version, who knows), 
although I haven't read the book.
They say the novel has this church's name.

We did not go in the church, just walked in the graveyard.

ドラキュラ効果！
墓石がたくさんある中、たくさんの観光客がいるのは
なんとなく、変な感じがします....
私も観光客の一人ですが、通常教会を訪ねるときは、
結構ひっそりしているのです。
ここは、すごく人気があるということですね。

Dracula Effect!
Somehow I feel strange that many tourists are among many tombstones.
I was one of them there, although when normally I visit churches they are quiet.
Here, it is very popular.

ケルト十字 
私はケルト十字にとても惹かれます。
ここの教会のケルト十字は、'Cædmon' (カードマン?) と呼ばれています。
この名は英国 (ノーサンブリア / Northumbria) 初期の詩人の名前です。

Celtic Cross
This Celtic Cross is called 'Cædmon' who was the earliest English (Northumbrian) poet whose name is known.
I am attracted by Celtic Crosses.

碑文には下記のようにあります。

「神の栄光に、そして、英語の聖歌の父である、Cædmonを記念して。

安らかに眠れ、680」

The inscription reads, 

"To the glory of God and in memory of Cædmon the father of English Sacred Song. 

Fell asleep hard by, 680."

2) 崖からの景色 / Views from the Cliff

エスク川に架かるA171橋
ウィットビーで残念に思っているのが、
ウィットービー・スウィング橋 / Whitby Swing Bridge と
ラープール・バイアダクト  / Larpool Viaduct 陸橋が見ること、
訪れることができなかったことです。
次回はきっと！

 A171 Bridge is thrown across River Esk
 I was not able to see and visit
 'Whitby Swing Bridge' or 'Larpool Viaduct'.
I would see and visit them next time.

1937 年に創業しています。
