❽北陸旅行- 軍艦島/見附島 / Hokuriku Trip - Warship Island / Mitsuke-jima 21st of January, 2015

Warship Island / Mitsuke-jima

軍艦島
見附島は軍艦島とも呼ばれています。
私にとって軍艦島は、長崎県の端島でした。
端島は無人島で廃墟なのですが、その歴史や規模とともに、
見附島よりは知名度があるように思います。
現在、端島は、世界遺産登録リスト
(九州・山口の近代化産業遺産群の一部として)にあります。
また端島をモデルにして横山秀夫(1957)氏の小説『64』(2012) は書かれています。

他にも軍艦島と呼ばれる島(★)がいくつかあるのも今回知りました。

Warship Island : ★
"Mitsuke-jima" is also called "Warship Island".
For me, "Warship Island" was "Hashima (Island)" in Nagasaki prefecture.
"Hashima" is a desert Island and a ruin,
although I think it is more popular than "Mitsuke-jima",
because "Hashima" has a special history and the size.
Now "Hashima" is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site as one of The Modern Industrial Heritage Sites in Kyushu and Yamaguchi.
And also Hideo Yokoyama (1957)'s novel is "64/ Rokuyon",
set on an Island like "Hashima".

Now I know there are some "Warship Island"s.

貝と珪藻土の石
見附島は珪藻土で、できています。

Shell and Stone of Diatomaceous earth
"Mitsuke-jima" is composed of diatomaceous earth.

社と空海の話
見附島は端島に比べると知名度はないかもしれませんが、
複雑な背景をもたないので、平和な感じがします。
空海 (774-835) が見つけ、名付けたと言われる"見附島"という名前の方が
この島にはふさわしいように、現地を訪れて思いました。

The Shrine and
the Story about the Island and Kūkai. (Only in Japanese)
"Mitsuke-jima" is not as well known as "Hashima",
although I feel it is peaceful,
because this Island does not have a complicated history.
They say Kūkai (774-835) first discovered this Island and
named it "Mitsuke-jima" which means Discovery Island.

Kūkai was a Japanese monk, scholar, artist and founder of Shingon Buddhism .

After I visited here I think the name suits rather than "Warship Island".
