洗礼者聖ヨハネ教会へ行きました。
My (our) purpose in Burford was "Go to HUFFKINS", we made it
and then visited the Church of St. John the Baptist.

訪ねてみると、思ったよりも、かなり整頓され、
規模が大きな教会であることがわかりました。
日本語のパンフレットも用意されていたことにも驚きました。
これは日本からの観光客が多いということでもあります。

When we visited, I found that the church was much more organized
and larger than I imagined.
I was also surprised that a pamphlet in Japanese was also available.
This must mean that there are many tourists from Japan.

外からドアを開ける時にスムーズにはゆかないので、
一瞬、閉まっているのかと思ってしまいます。
それで入ることを諦める人も結構いるのではないかと思いました。
実際、私達が中にいる間にあるグループが諦めかけていたので、
中からドアを開けてあげました。
このポーチは15世紀に作られました。
不具合も起きることもうなづけます。
でも心配はご無用！
来訪者は年間10万人以上なのです。

When I opened the doors from the outside, it didn't go smoothly,
so for a moment, I wondered if it was closed.
I thought quite a few people would give up for entering,
In fact, a group was giving up while we were inside,
so I opened the door for them from inside.
This porch was made in the 15th century.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
But don't worry!
There are more than 100,000 visitors annually.

リッチフィールド大聖堂 / Lichfield Cathedral にもあったはずなのですが、どの窓が彼の作品だったのかわからずじまいでした。
There are several of Kempe's works in "Wightwick Manor": ★ that we visited this summer.

Some of his works is in Lichfield Cathedral, but I didn't know which window was his work.

本体は教会の建物同様の古さです。 装飾は14世紀に追加されました。 後ろのステンドグラスは、ケンプの作品に思えるのですが.... Font : 2 The body of the font is as old as a church building. I think... the stained glass behind is Kempe's work. |

エドマンド・ハーマン / Edmund Harman (c1509 - 1577)は、 ヘンリー8世 (1491 -1547 / 在位：1509 -1547)の 理容師兼外科医 (Barber surgeon)でした。 私は、初めて'Barber surgeon (バーナー・サージョン)'という職業を知りました。 理容師がカミソリを扱うことから外科的治療が派生したようです。 現代では、ちょっと考えにくい 'リンク’ です...コワイ....。 この記念碑には、英国で最古の アメリカン・インディアン (インディオ) のレリーフ画と
ハーマンの16人の子供のレリーフ画が施されています。
Harman Monument : 3 Edmund Harman (c1509-1577) was a barber surgeon of
Henry VIII (1491 -1547 / 1509 -1547).
This is the first I knew of an occupation called 'Barber surgeon'.
It seems that surgical treatment was derived from the barber's handling of razors.
In today's world, it's a little difficult to think of this 'link '... scary...
This monument features the oldest portrayal of South American Indians in Britain
and reliefs of his 16 children. |
エドマンド・ハーマン は、1540年代にバーフォードの住人になり、ヘンリー8世の行った修道院解散令 / Dissolution of the Monasteries の受益者(修道院から奪った財産を分け与えられた人)の1人になり、バーフォードの小修道院 (Priory)を得ました。
(この小修道院がどこにあるのか、今もって存在しているのかはわかりません)
ハーマンは、貿易の仕事もしていました。
アメリカン・インディアンのレリーフが記念碑にあるのは、南アメリカへの貿易に関係していたからだと考えられています。

Edmund Harman became a resident of Burford in the 1540s, and became one of the beneficiaries of the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII and he was given Burford Priory.
(I don't know where this priory is or if it still exists.)
Harman also worked in trade.
It is believed that the American Indian relief was on the monument because it was associated with trade to South America.

ここは、資料が展示され、ミニ博物館のようでした。
Here, materials were displayed and it was like a mini museum.

A copy of the "Ghent Altarpiece" was on display.
The real thing is in St. Bavo Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium.
We visited the Cathedral in 2017 and saw the real thing.
