私と夫Rは、2019年8月、コッツウォルズ旅行をしました。
I and my husband R made a trip to the Cotswolds in August 2019.

1) 撮影地 / Filming Location 

グロスター大聖堂 / Gloucester Cathedral は、最近では、"ハリー・ポッター" (2001-2011) の撮影地として知られています。

実は、"ドクター・フー / Doctor Who" (1963~ / 2008年放映) や
 "シャーロック / Sherlock" [2010 - 2017 / 主演：ベネディクト・カンバーバッチ (1976 ~) / 2016年放映] の撮影地でもあります。

私とRが訪れた日も、何かの撮影が行われていて、回廊の部分が閉鎖され、見ることができませんでした。

のちに、"ドクター・フー" [シリーズ12、第5話; "Fugitive of the Judoon" / 2020年放映] の撮影であることがわかりました。

グロスター大聖堂は、グロスター州の州都グロスターにあり、コッツウォルズに含められています。

グロスターの中心地はコッツウォルズを感じられませんが、郊外はコッツウォルズの風景になっているのでしょう。

私達は、バースを拠点にコッツウォルズを訪ねる旅行をしました。

この日は、宿泊所(自炊付き) : “Contemporary Newly Built Cottage”からグロスター大聖堂へ向かいました。

Filming Location

Gloucester Cathedral is nowadays known as one of the filming locations of "Harry Potter" (2001 -2011).

Actually, it is also a shooting location for "Doctor Who" (1963 ~ / Aired in 2008) and "Sherlock" [2010-2017 / Starring : Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch (1976 ~) / Aired in 2016].

On the day I and my husband R visited, something was being filmed and the corridor was closed, so we couldn't see it.

Later, it turned out that it was a filming of "Doctor Who" [Series 12, Episode 5; 'Fugitive of the Judoon' / Aired in 2020].

Gloucester Cathedral is in Gloucester, the capital of the county of Gloucestershire 
and is part of the Cotswolds.

The centre of Gloucester doesn't feel like the Cotswolds, but the suburbs are probably Cotswolds.

We made a trip to the Cotswolds while based in Bath for 5 nights 6 days.

On this day, we headed to Gloucester Cathedral from accommodation (self-catering) : "Contemporary Newly Built Cottage" in Bath.

2) 屋外 / Outside
A. 建物 / Building 

グロスター大聖堂は、678年または679年に建てられた聖ペトロに捧げられた修道院を前身としています。

英国の他の多くの修道院同様に、この修道院も、1540年、ヘンリー8世 (1491 - 1547 / 在位：1509 - 1547) の修道院解散令 / Dissolution of the Monasteries で解散させらました。

その時に、破壊行為が行われていないように私には感じられました。

それは建物そのものがそのままイングランド国教会に譲られたからだと私は理解しています。

グロスター大聖堂

正式名称は、'聖ピーターと聖なる不可分離の三位一体主教座聖堂'。
長〜〜い名前ですね。覚えられません(笑)。
なので、'グロスター大聖堂'と呼びます。( 'グロセスター' ではありません）

Gloucester Cathedral

Formally the 'Cathedral Church of St Peter and the Holy and Indivisible Trinity'.
It is a lo~~ng name, isn't it? I cannot remember (Laugh).
So I (we) say 'Gloucester Cathedral'.

外からでもたくさんの、しかも大きなステンドグラスがあるのがわかります。

ステンドグラスについてはのちのセクションに載せます。

From the outside, you can see that there are many large stained glass.
I will put about stained glass in a later section.

Building 

The Gloucester Cathedral predates the monastery dedicated to Saint Peter, built in 678 or 679.

Like many other monasteries in Britain, this monastery was dissolved in 1540 with the Dissolution of the Monasteries of Henry VIII (1491-1547/ reign 1509-1547).

I felt that at that time, there was no vandalism here.

I understand that it is because the building itself was given to the Church of England as it was.

現在の教会の基礎は、セルロ / Serlo修道院長（? - 1104）によって築かれました

基本はノルマン様式建築で建てられ、

その後ゴシック建築のあらゆるスタイルが追加されています。

The foundations of the present church were laid by Abbot Serlo (? -1104). 

The base is built in Norman architecture, 

after which every style of Gothic architecture had been added.

B. ガーゴイル / Gargoyle

私は、ガーゴイル / Gargoyleが大好き!

グロスター大聖堂には、今まで見たことがないガーゴイルがあり、楽しめました。

石の感じからして、復元されたように思います。

ガーゴイル
ガーゴイルは、雨樋 (アマドイ) の機能をもつ、グロテスクな外見の彫刻です。
 ガーゴイルの長さは、水が壁からどのくらい離れているかを決定するため、
通常、ガーゴイルは細長い幻想的な動物です。
時には天使もあります。

Gargoyle

Gargoyle is a grotesque-looking sculpture that has the function of a rain gutter.
Gargoyles are usually an elongated fantastical animal, 
because the length of the gargoyle 
determines how far water is directed from the wall.

I love Gargoyles!

In Gloucester Cathedral, there are types of gargoyle that I had never seen before and I enjoyed them.

My impression of the stones is that they were restored.

リュートを抱えているガーゴイルは初めて見ました。
I saw a gargoyle holding a lute for the first time.

大聖堂のガーゴイルは、何かしらを持っています。
少なくとも、私が撮影したガーゴイルは！

The Cathedral gargoyles each have something.

At least the gargoyles I photographed.

3) 周囲 / Surrounding

大聖堂の周囲の家々は、とても整備されている印象でした。

整備されているという事に関していえば、大聖堂もそんな印象です。

宗教関係の建物は、比較的混沌としている印象が私にはあります。

ですが、グロスター大聖堂は、色々なスタイルを持ちつつも、整理され、オフィスのような印象でした。

不思議です...。

The houses around the Cathedral were very well maintained.

In terms of being maintained, the Cathedral also gives such an impression.

I have the impression that religious buildings are often relatively chaotic.

However, Gloucester Cathedral was organized and office-like, despite its various styles.

It's strange ...

この空間の広がり方がとても近代的です。
そして建物がスタジオのセットのように感じてしまうのは、私だけでしょうか？

The way this space spreads is very modern.
And is it only me who has the feeling that the buildings look like a studio set?

真ん中の家、可愛いですね。
The house in the middle is lovely, isn't it?

4) 大聖堂の道 / Cathedral Way

"大聖堂の道 / Cathedral Way"

大聖堂の東に、"大聖堂の道 / Cathedral Way"を見つけました。

この道は、大聖堂の 敷地の一角に思えます。

グロスター駅から徒歩で 大聖堂へ向かう人は 使用するのかもしれません。

私達は街中の駐車場を利用したので、大聖堂の南側から到着しました。

"Cathedral Way"

To the east of the Cathedral, I found the "Cathedral Way".

This path seems to be on the grounds of the Cathedral.

People who walk to the Cathedral from Gloucester Station may use it.

We used a car park in the city so we arrived from the south side of the Cathedral.

 

聖ジョーンズ教会の尖塔の先
聖ジョーンズ教会は15世紀に建てられ、八角形の尖った尖塔がありました。
1732年に教会は老朽化し、1734年に昔のスタイルで建てられましたが、
尖塔は3m短くなって再現されました。
短くなった尖塔がここに設置されています。

次のセクションは、大聖堂の屋内つにていです。
