Hokuriku Trip - Suzu Shrine, 21st of January, 2015

Suzu Shrine

Established Before Christ!
Suzu Shtine is north-east of Suzu city.
They say the shrine was established in Emperor Sujin period (B.C. 97-29),
it was moved to here around A.D. 749-756.

The Shrine is dedicated to 2 Gods: Ninigi-no-Mikoto, Mihosusu-no-Mikoto and
1 Goddess : Konohananosakuya-bime and 3 other Gods.

The Forest is Natural Monument, 1976.
Here, the approach has a good atmosphere, I like it.
Actually I did not pray at the shrine, but I really enjoyed walking on the approach.

I felt there are mountain spirits or forest spirits which reminded me of Shirataniunsui Forest of Yakushima which is an Island to the south of Japan, with World Heritage Designation and the forest was a location for Hayao Miyazaki(1941 -)'s film
 "
Princess Mononoke"(1997).

A Pair of Guardian Dogs

Mother and Child?
I feel it is unusual that the dog looks as though it is with a child.
Is this a mother dog?

Is this a father dog?
It was first time I notice the guardian dog's gender.
And also once I recognize they are a family, I feel warm.

Swans

From the Coach
After the shrine, our coach drove along a road,
I saw something white!
The coach guide said they are swans!

I heard the locals feed them.
I feel Noto people's efforts for tourism.

I still do not associate swans with rice paddies,
I wonder if because when I have seen swans,
it was in Britain, on the River Thames or in castle's moats.

Here, the swans are migratory birds,
I think their strength is different from Thames' ones.

Hokuriku Trip - The Japanese lighting the lighthouse of modernization-Rokko Point Lighthouse, 21st of January, 2015

Rokko Point Lighthouse

The lighthouse's nickname is Noroshi Lighthouse
which means Smoke Signal.
Yamabushi mountain is south of this point which was used for smoke signals.
The village below the lighthouse was called "Smoke Signal Village".
Smoke signals are in many cultures, aren't they?

Richard Henry Brunton (1841 -1901)

Japanese Wikipedia: ★
Opened : 10th of July, 1883
"Rokko Point Lighthouse" () at the tip of Noto peninsula.
It was designed by a Briton, Richard Henry Brunton (1841 -1901) and
it was the first time a lighthouse was built by Japanese,

so Emperor Meiji  (1852-1912) gave it the Imperial Chrysanthemum Crest
Imperial Chrysanthemum Crest
While Brunton stayed in Japan :1868-1876,
he made "26 Lighhouses"() , he is called "Father of Japanese Lighthouse" ."Rokkosaki Lighthouse" is not in this list :"26 Lighhouse",
I wonder if it is because it was built after he left Japan.
I guess officially they thought it is important it was built by only Japanese
rather than Brunton's work, therefore it is the only one with a Crest in Japan.
Japan changed from Edo period : Tokugwa Shogun to
  Meiji Period
Emperor Meiji (1852-1912)  in 1868 and
this lighthouse was built about 20 years later.
Japanese could not design and build a lighthouse in Edo period
however, after only 20 years, Japan reached here,
I can easily imagine how pleased Emperor Meiji was.
Here, the lighthouse is symbolic of the
Japanese lighting the lighthouse of modernization.

⬅︎To Vladivostok, 772km
I heard Vladivostok, however, I did not know exactly where it is,
probably somewhere in Russia, isn't it?

The city is the south in a red part.
I put "Vladivostok" in Google Map, then I found it
and understand where it is now.

I found the stone monument of "Here is the Center of Japan",
I was surprised!

Digression

The lighthouse is on the top of the hill.

Walking down to the coach I looked at Noroshi fishing port and
the tip of Suzu (Kongou).
I thought I found hanging drying Kaki; persimmon, and then I photographed,
actually they were onions.

We heard the explanation about boiling of sea water in "Kamaya".
I started feeling this trip was like a school trip.

Hokuriku Trip - Sea of Japan, 21st of January, 2015

They call the western coast Sotoura, the east coast Uchiura. ("The outside" and "inside" coasts)

Gojindaiko: Gojin Drum
I heard that tourists are welcomed by a drum performance

in Noto airport at weekends.
We arrived there on a weekday, so we haven't seen it.

The History of the Drum
When Uesugi Kenshin(1530-1578)  tried to conquer Noto
in 1576
his army arrived on a beach which is now called Misaki town in Suzu city.
The army was much stronger than the locals, so as a last resort the locals pretended to be monsters with wooden skin masks and seaweed hair,

they were beating drums and attacked at night.
The Uesugi army were routed.

It was popularized by the Internet.
Japanese Wikipedia has this, so I was surprised.
My photo was taken from the coach.

Hokuriku Trip - Shiroyone-Senmaida; Thousand Rice Paddies in Shiroyone, 21st of January, 2015

Shiroyone-Senmaida; Rice Terraces
(A Thousand Rice Paddies in Shiroyone)

Shiroyone-Senmaida ; Thousand Rice Paddies :
I did not know about here, however, it is very popular, isn't it?
Here was designated as one of Japanese 100 Rice Terraces, National important cultural view properties and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Each paddy is very tiny, so it can only grow rice by hand.

Along Route 249
The terraces go down to the sea,
I think this is unique. At least I have never seen this.

The wind from the "Sea of Japan" looks very strong....
I was surprised by here, the rice can grow against salt winds.

They say it was started to protect against landslip.
The maximum elevation is 56m, which is about the19th floor of a tall building.
The gross area is 28,036㎡ and there are 1004 paddies.

PET-BOTAL : Plastic Bottle Firefly?
The lights consist of a solar-panel, rechargable battery and
a light‐emitting diode: LED, in a plastic bottle.
They charge in the daytime and automatically use the electricity at night.
There are 20461 of them and it is in the Guinness Book of Records, 2012.

At night, there is lit up (limited-season) →
I admire the ideas and the wisdom of the people of Noto nowadays and in old days.
