1) イサムノグチ / Isamu Noguchi
イサムノグチ (1904 - 1988) は、多方面に才能を発揮したアーティストです。
インテリアデザイナー、舞台芸術家です。
彼の父親は日本人、母親がアメリカ人で、日系アメリカ人です。
彼は、パリで、彫刻をコンスタンティン・ブランクーシ(1876 -1957)に学び、鎌倉で陶芸を北大路魯山人 (キタオオオジ ロサンジン/ 1883 -1959) にのもとで学んでいます。
私が彼を最初に知った何かを思い出すことができません。
何かをリサーチすると彼の名前が出てきました。
これが彼の代表作品だという作品は記憶にありませんでしたが、彼の名前私の記憶に刷り込まれて行きました。
2月14日が私達の結婚記念日で、"結婚10周年アートの旅" を企画しました。
行先が香川県に決まり、リサーチ中に、'イサムノグチ庭園美術館'を見つけました。
'イサムノグチ庭園美術館' のサイト：★で、庭の写真を見て、ぜひ行きたいと思いました。
入園は、予約必須でしたので、 2月7日10:00に予約しました。
その時刻に間に合うように、私達は、ホテルを出ました。

Isamu Noguchi (1904 - 1988) was a multi-talented artist.
He was a sculptor, landscape architect, interior designer, and stage artist from Los Angeles, USA.
His father was Japanese and his mother was American, so he was of Japanese descent.
He studied sculpture under Constantin Brancusi (1876 -1957) in Paris and ceramics under Kitaoji Rosanjin (1883 -1959) in Kamakura, Japan.
I can't remember what first introduced me to him.
When I was researching something, sometimes his name came up.
I didn't remember any work that I thought was his signature piece, but his name was imprinted on my memory.
14th of February is our wedding anniversary, so we planned a "10th Wedding Anniversary Art Trip".
Our destination was decided to be Kagawa Prefecture, and while doing research I found the 'Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum'.
After seeing photographs of the garden on the 'Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum' website : ★ we really wanted to go.
Reservations were required to enter the museum, so I made our reservation for 10:00 on 7th of February.
We left the hotel in time for that.

私達が宿泊しているホテルから、'イサムノグチ庭園美術館' への行き方は複数ありました。
その中から、'ことでんバス' : ★を利用する方法を選びました。
これが最も徒歩時間が短い方法でした。

| 玉藻公園 玉藻公園 (タマモコウエン) の正式名は、 '高松城跡・玉藻公園'です。 宿泊していた 'JRホテルクレメント高松' からも 各機関の交通の便も良い場所にあります。 私達は、各地の城または城跡を訪れており、 ここも興味もありました。 今回の旅行中訪れることはできないかと思案しましたが、 組み入れることができませんでした。 テーマがアートなので、他の場所の優先順位が高かったのです。 Tamamo Park The official name of Tamamo Park is The location is well connected to all public transport from the 'JR Hotel Clement Takamatsu' where we were staying. We have visited castles and castle ruins in various places, and we were interested in this place too. I wondered if we could visit this place during our trip, but we couldn't fit it in. As the theme was art, other places had higher priority. |

'祈り岩与一公園前' 下車、すぐに'イサムノグチ庭園美術館' の案内板(下の画像)を見つけました。
We got off at 'Inori-iwa-Yoichi Park' and immediately found a sign for the 'Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum', below.
C. '祈り岩' / 'Inori-iwa'
'扇の的' は、那須 与一 が海上の小舟で女官が指す竿の先の扇を彼が矢で当てた話です。
バス停から'イサムノグチ庭園美術館'へゆく途中に、'扇の的'を題材にしたオブジェがあり、その横のは、与一が矢を射る前に祈った岩: '祈り岩' を示す看板がありました。
'祈り岩' が、このバス停名の由来になったことを知りました。
私達は時間がないので、オブジェを撮影して、'祈り岩' を見にゆかず、先を急ぎました。

'Inori-iwa'
The area around this bus stop is the site of the Battle of Yashima (1185), one of the battles in the Genpei War / Jishō-Juei War1180-1185].
The Battle of Yashima is that the Genji Navy led by
Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159 - 1189) forced the Taira clan based at Yashima to retreat westwards.
The Battle of Yashima has a famous episode, the 'Ogi-no-Mato' ('Target of Fan') of Nasu no Yoichi (c.1169 - c.1232).
The 'Ogi-no-Mato' is Nasu no Yoichi successfully firing an arrow at a fan at the top of a boat's pole pointed at by a court lady while she was on the boat at sea.
On the way from the bus stop to the 'Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum', there were objects themed on the episode, and next to them was a sign indicating the rock where Yoichi prayed before shooting his arrow : the 'Prayer Rock'.
So here, I found out that the 'Prayer Rock' is the origin of the name of this bus stop.
We were short on time, so I took photographs of the objects and hurried on without going to see the 'Prayer Rock'.

'イサムノグチ庭園美術館' 周辺は、高松市牟礼町(ムレチョウ)です。
昨日、訪ねた四国村の中心路は、庵治石を用いた '流れ坂'
[流政之 (ナガレマサユキ/ 1923 -2018) 作 ] でした。
庵治石は、キメが細かい花崗岩 (カコウガン) です。
イサムノグチのアトリエと住居の跡地が'イサムノグチ庭園美術館'になっていますが、彼がこの地を選んだのも、庵治石の産地だったからです。

Mure-chō
The area around the 'Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum' is Mure-cho, Takamatsu City.
Aji stone (★) can be dug from Mt. Gokenzan (also known as Mt. Yakuriyama), so there are several stone shops.
The central road of Shikoku Mura, which I visited yesterday, was the 'Nagarezaka' [Flowing Slope / by Masayuki Nagare (1923 - 2018) ]
made of Aji stone.
Aji stone is a fine-grained granite.
The site of Isamu Noguchi's studio and residence is now the 'Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum', and he chose this place because it was a source of Aji stone.

"庵治町は日本の有名な花崗岩産地のひとつとされている。
庵治の花崗岩、ブランド名で「庵治石」は「ダイヤモンド・グラナイト」と呼ばれる。
石英と長石を主成分とする天然の白石だが、少量の黒雲母が混じっているため、独特のまだら模様が見られるのが特徴だ。
庵治石は、芸術家や石工の間では、細かさと極めて高い耐久性が珍重されており、建築物や屋外彫刻などの装飾品に最適な素材となっている。
庵治石は石英に匹敵する硬さを持ち、他の花崗岩に比べて彫刻の精度が高いことで知られている。
イサム・ノグチ（1904-1988）や流政之（1923-2018）などの国際的に著名な芸術家たちは、庵治や隣町の牟礼にアトリエを構え、庵治石を容易に入手できるようにしていた。
庵治町と牟礼町には、現在約200人の石工や石材商がいる。
庵治石は、庵治と牟礼の間にある五剣山から切り出される。
この山は世界で唯一の庵治石の産地として知られている。"

"The town of Aji is famous as one of Japan’s premier granite-producing areas.
Aji granite, or Aji Stone as it is branded, bears the nickname 'diamond granite'.
The stone is naturally white and primarily consists of quartz and feldspar, but it has a unique speckled appearance due to the small amount of black mica in the mix.
Aji Stone is prized among artists and masons for its fine grain and extreme durability, which make it an ideal material for buildings as well as outdoor sculptures and other ornaments.
Aji Stone is as hard as quartz and is known to allow greater precision in carving than other types of granite.
Internationally renowned artists such as Isamu Noguchi (1904 - 1988) and Nagare Masayuki (1923 - 2018) maintained studios in Aji or the neighboring town of Mure in order to have easy access to Aji Stone.
Today, approximately 200 masons and stone dealers do business in Aji and Mure.
Aji Stone is quarried from Mt. Goken, which stands between the two towns.
The mountain is the only known source of Aji Stone in the world."

From the bus stop to the 'Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum', there are several stone shops and the stones and lanterns they have cut are lined up.
Even if you don't know anything about this area, you will realize that it is a special area related to stones.

A. 入り口はどこ？ / Where is the Entrance?
'イサムノグチ庭園美術館'までに、石材が積まれている場所は、複数箇所、見ました。
庭園美術館に近づくと積まれた石材が整理されてゆく、または、何かの作品であるかのように見えてきました。
石でなく、すでに彫刻作品として設置されている場所もありました。
なので、ここが、庭園美術館の入り口か？という勘違いを複数回しました。

Where is the Entrance?
We have seen several places where stones are piled up on the way to the 'Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum'.
As we approach the Garden Museum, the stacked stones seemed more organized or started to look like they were something.
In some places, not stones, they were already installed as sculptures.
So a few times I thought 'Here might be the entrance to the Garden Museum'.

B. ツアー / Tour
ここは、予約必須でかつ、見学時間が1時間という制限時間付きです。
私は園内を1時間以内に自由見学するものだと思ってました。
ですが実際は、グループツアーで、美術館のスタッフ(学芸員?)について庭園を見てまわりました。
写真撮影は禁止です。
この庭園美術館は、素晴らしかったので、撮影が禁止であることがとても残念に思われました。
庭が撮影禁止であることに驚きました。
英国や私が訪れたヨーロッパの地、日本を含めて、庭が撮影禁止なのは、ここだけではないかと思います。
イサムノグチの庭は、空間も彼の作品なので、撮影禁止なのかと推測しています。
"結婚10周年アートの旅" の中で、ここが最も再度訪ねたいと思った場所でした。

The sand (or gravel?) covering the ground is also spread throughout the main garden. It is swept. a few times a day to keep it looking beautiful. |
Tour
Reservations are required and there is a one-hour viewing time limit.
I thought we would be able to explore the gardens on our own within the hour.
But in reality, we were on a group tour and toured the gardens accompanied by a museum staff member (a curator?).
Photography is prohibited.
This Garden Museum was amazing and it seemed very unfortunate that photography was prohibited.
I was surprised that the garden was not allowed to be photographed.
I think this is the only place I have visited in the UK, European countries, and even Japan, where photography is prohibited in the gardens.
I assume that photography is prohibited in Isamu Noguchi's garden because the space is also his work.
Of all the places on our "10th wedding anniversary art trip", this was the one we most wanted to visit again.

| 屋内 屋内には、受付とミュージアムショップがあります。 私達はここで、スタッフに勧められて美術館の 長靴に履き替えました。 雨上がりで、庭がぬかるんでいるためと推測しました。 ですが実際は、庭は砂地で濡れてはいたものの、 ぬかるんではいませんでした。 Inside Indoors there is a reception desk and a museum shop. We changed into museum boots here, recommended by the staff. I guessed it was because the garden was muddy after the rain. However, in reality, the garden was wet with sand, so not muddy.  茶色のブーツは私のもの、白い長靴は美術館が 用意しているものです。 Rは靴を長靴に履き替えている途中です。 晴れの日の場合は、庭に水撒きをし、 故意的に地面を湿らせるそうです。 岩は水を得ることによって、美しさを増します。 この日は、雨上がりだったので、水撒き必要はありませんでした。 Brown boots are mine, and white boots are provided by the museum. R is in the process of changing from his shoes into boots. On sunny days, they water the garden and intentionally make the ground moist. Rocks become even more beautiful when they receive water. On this day, it had just rained, so there was no need to do this. |
